Wide feet, need cushioning

I went from a Barricade II to a New Balance 654. The 4E width that I got was too wide, so if I'm going to get another pair of NB it would be 2E. The other, and bigger, problem was the NB seems to lack cushioning. No offence to NB lovers but it just seemed thinner and harder than the Barricade. I play on crappy concrete courts, scramble and pound alot, but never had a knee injury until now. With the Barricade IIs it was just so smooth (which I switched out of because it was getting too hot in there due to being too narrow + no mesh).

Now I'm looking at: Barricade II Mid (I figure the higher top will give me more room in the midfoot, which is where I need it), 654 2E (iffy about this one, but I figure the injury might be due to the shoes being too wide), a3 Prevail/Prevail II (does the reduced height REALLY not sacrifice comfort? REALLY? someone tell me), Prince T9 Roadster.

I have not worn these, but a couple of guys in our circle swear by the Prince OC1's in the wide version. I believe the OV1's also come in wides. The OC's have more cushioning and the OV's shoot for maximum ventilation. Worth a look.

nah don't get the barricade 2 mid. its basically the same as the barricade two just with the higher top, its not gogin to be any wider. I really think that if you like the comfort of the barricade two but want a better model you should get the barricade 5.

While some say they are, half of the feedback for the Gel Resolution says they're not for wide feet.

I'm a perfect 2E. I've tried the resolution and although they're not narrow, they're not a true 2E. more like a 1E. The T9's have good cushioning, not not great cushioning in the forefoot. I would say the KFS pump is better for a wide feet needing good cushioning.

Agree. I've used Barricade II's for years and recently bought a pair of Asic Gel Resolution in hopes of increasing the cushioning. I found them no wider than the Barricades and the toe box is a little tight on the outside of the foot near the toes. I'm back with the Barricade II's.

Not to hijack the thread, but which shoe has the best fore-foot cushioning, the Yonex 304 or the Asics Resolution?

I tried on a pair of Nike BF2 and the cushioning was great in the heel but horribe in the forefoot.

I don't neet width in the forefoot, I don't need it in the heel. I need it in the MIDDLE. That's where it gets tight and hot.

I can second the fit of the Prince T-9. I have a somewhat high instep (middle) and the T-9's fit well.

Can anybody comment on the fit of the Asics Gel Challenger?

ok, well the Asic Gel Resolutions may provide slightly more room in the middle relative to the Barricade II's, but' I'd be surprised if they offered more ventilation. Like the Barricades the Asics are excellent shoes, but based on what you're saying I'm not convinced they will do what you want.

Any word on the a3 Prevail/prevail 2? The midfoot of the outsole looks like it's very narrow.. like a soccer shoe almost.

Also understand NB's numbering system. Usually, the mid hundred numbers are really geared towards the low end. 800 (some would say 900) on up is where you get the best cushioning materials and overall design features, like attention to ventilation, addressing movement for each particular sport, etc.

I have a 2e foot(flat and wide).. I just went up 1/2 a size & it is fine. That would be the same as my other shoes Yonex 304/305/306, Addidas B1/B3/B5 & Asics Gel resolution. All size 12.

304 and Resolution... are both very very close.... My two favorite shoes. I would say the resolution because the 304 are so hard to find now. Plus the Asics is more taper in the toe box than the Yonex, which I like a little more.

I think the Yonex would be a bit tighter in the midfoot(thicker material) than the Asics(more flexible material in the mid section and a bit more room than the Yonex)

The NB 654 is a pretty horrible shoe - the cushioning packs out almost instantly. You may prefer other NB models. I wear the 1003 because they have better cushioning, but that is a more expensive model. I have a wider foot (4e) and have tried on most available tennis shoes. While they were too narrow for me, I would agree that the wide Prince shoes are really nicely built. The Head and Yonex shoes also have noticably high quality of construction.

I think that Adidas and Puma are known to be the narrowest cuts, so you seem to be going in the wrong direction. Nikes are known to have a wider last.

I also have wide feet and NB 2E is the best size for me... I agree the 654 are preety crappy... I've found much more cushioning in CT802s plus a better full herringbone pattern which is good because I play mainly on clay. Tried the A3 Prevail and they were too narrow for me.

Just as a follow-up, I went with the KFS Pump Advantage. Great all around shoe, fits my foot almost perfectly, great cushioning so that I nearly don't notice the crap concrete court I'm pounding on. Will stay with this shoe for a long time, probably until they stop selling them. If anyone has any questions about the shoe feel free to ask.

Glad you found a good shoe. I'll also dog pile on the NB 654. I had to stop playing with them after about a month because I was getting some weird foot pain. Another guy at the club I play at had the same foot problem with the shoe. The 1002 series was great, but I have not tried the 1003 series yet. I picked up a pair of the NB 547s at one of the big box stores and I've been very pleased with the shoes especially for the price. It was on sale for $45. I wear a 4E size, so my choice of shoes is fairly limited.

glad u found something u liked...i was gonna ask if you ever tried the nike city court 3 wides? they work for me(i do use insoles for extra cushion even tho i remembered them to be pretty soft anyway) and i was interesed in how the reeboks stack up against them

Try the Nike court ballistic 1.3's (Nadal's shoes). I got wide and flat feet, and these are the most comfortable shoes I've had in the last few years.

This is an interesting comment. I thought the Ballistics were supposed to be narrow shoes?

The ballistic 1.2's definitely felt 'narrow' and gave me blisters the first day. 1.3's on the other hand are pretty comfortable if you like the width of new balance shoes and nike breathe free II's. So I guess its relative to those shoes.

Was wondering how they are in the heel? I'm an E width, but think I have a narrower heel than normal.

I'd say these maintain the medium-wide fit throughout, including the heel. It's generous there.

Thanks. I ended up going with Yonex 304S. More than I wanted to spend, but hopefully I won't have to spend again for a while. Any others wearing these care to comment?
