Wilander : Before FO 2018 Rafa could hold all 4 majors / 18 slam count

A resurgent Rafael Nadal won his 10th French Open, and 15th major overall, at Roland Garros this past weekend, snapping a three-year Grand Slam drought.

The Spaniard didn’t drop a set along the way, establishing his dominance from his first ball to his last.

And just because the clay season is officially over, there’s no reason to think that the 31-year-old is going to slow down anytime soon.

According to Mats Wilander, this run might just be the beginning of what could be an even more historic year.

Absolutely he is one of the main favorites now for Wimbledon,” the three-time French Open champion said, according to Reuters. “…He has taken confidence away from [Stan] Wawrinka, from [Andy] Murray, even though he didn’t play him. And Roger Federer is a very happy man that he didn’t come to the French, because his confidence has not been dented.”

As for the remaining Grand Slams on the 2017 calendar, Nadal is a two-time champion at Wimbledon (2008 and 2010) and a two-time champion at the U.S. Open (2010 and 2013). He hasn’t won at the All England Club in seven years, and has made it to the fourth round just once since 2012. Nadal reached the final in Melbourne this past January, and in 2014 and 2012, but has only hoisted the trophy there once, in 2009.

Still, Wilander believes that, the way he’s playing, Nadal has the ability to hold all four majors, just as Novak Djokovic did this past year.

“Rafa could arrive here next year, in May, with 18,” the Hall of Famer told the news agency.

Nadal is taking this week off, and will return to action on June 19 at the Aegon Championships in London.

I don't see it happening. He's been playing too poorly on grass to win Wimbledon, and now he's even withdrawn from Queens. Miracle if he does though.

People have no memory?. One year ago it was 50/50 Djoker would surpass Federer and it was beyond any doubt he would surpass Nadal/Sampras. Suddenly Rafa has 18 slams before FO18? :D. How about learning from the past how things change in tennis? Trollander should know from personal experience. I wouldnt be surprised if Fedal have won their last slam...

Oh, how trivial 4 slams in a row is now! Djokovic achieves it for the first time since 1969, so 47 years, then Mats Wilander believes that Nadal can duplicate that. Is there something wrong with Mats? Seriously, 4 slams is more than over 99.99% of the tour will ever have. To get those in a row is even more difficult. Not gonna happen.

He's right - Rafa can. And Ferrer can come to French 2018 with 3 Slams. Also Berdych and Tsonga. Karlovic. Gulbis. I could go on....

True, but the same was true of winning 3 in a year.

Had been done 3 times in the Open Era - 69, 74 and 88 - all the way to 2003 (36 years)
Since 2004, its as likely as not - 6 times in 12 years

Is there something wrong with Mats?

I'll give you two choices -

- Hell yeah
- He knows how to make a headline grabbing announcement

Laver said something similar about Federer after Australian this year... I believe he said something like that about Andy Murray one year even before the Aus had gone down... and not many people react to Laver by thinking something's wrong with him.

This is just Mats' style now, I suspect... pretty sure he wouldn't put his money where his mouth is on this

Not gonna happen.

now there's a radical thought:)

I think that even the fangirls of Nadal in the forum dont believe that he could actually win all 4

I'll take expert suresh's gut feeling over all of you rookies. :D

I have a gut feeling that Nadal is going to win this Wimbledon

Nadal is back. He is going to win Wimbledon.

Mats is a genius. He will bet everything for Rafa to win the next 3 slams and become multi multi millionaire.

If Rafa comes to 2018 French having won 4 slams in hand, then 19th slam(2018 FO) is foregone conclusion.

Seriously, it would be interesting to see how Rafa fares in the next 3 slams
