Will a multi and poly hybrid always notch quickly?

I did NRG2 in the mains and Gosen polylon crosses just to try it (it sucked). The NRG2 notched immediately. Is it because of how soft it is? Will all multis do this? What if I’d put the multi as the cross instead?

I see what people mean by a locked up string bed now. (I assume this is bad)

Yes switch the 2 . It will soften the bed as the multi gives the feeling in the cross . The softer string should be in the cross to allow more feel.

Interesting. I’ve heard the mains sort of drive what you get out of the string bed. I love poly/syn gut but hated syn gut/poly so this makes sense.

It is true that the mains have a large impact on the overall performance.

the thing is that the softer main will notch really fast while if you use that same string as a cross, you will get more durability.

I usually play with msv hex mains and various crosses, always more supple strings. As an experiment I switched mains and crosses in the set up. It played excellent, but notched like crazy and snapped within days. And I rarely break strings. So it’s a pure trade off between performance and duarability in my experience.

Both polygon and NRG have a low string to string COF. NRG is a soft string that stretches a lot. So the mains are going to slide a great deal and the NRG will grove fast. I agree with @fjcamry, put the stiffer poly in the mains. You won’t get the same power you had with NRG mains. Lowering tension in the poly mains will help. I’m not a big fan of hybrid stringing but I can understand why many do it. If it was me I would use full bed of either string with a big drop in tension for the poly.

Use string savers from Babolat. Feel will be affected and a new tension may be needed. OTW, just switch to poly mains and soft cross. NRG2 will shred, so your strings will eventually lock up. But by then, it will be time to replace the poly.

Babolat string savers help prevent this from happening. Notching is drastically reduced and the string bed plays very consistent.
