Obviously he isn’t ready to play Slam-winning tennis.

What you all are still clinging onto hope for (a triumphant Alcaraz return and the old Carlos back) just isn’t feasible. Not in this turnaround time and probably not in 2027 either. Maybe, there’s a slim chance he can play at an OK level 12-18 months from now.

But I think JCF killed his career and he’s in the death throes of what Thiem went thru in 2021. I genuinely think he’s never going to be the same.

Yes- no warm up off of an injury in a Bo5 tournament is too much. Yeah he is defending points, but him and his team know he is the 2nd best player in the world despite rankings so they won't fret too much about points.

He probably isn't even second best, with the injury he's probably lose to a random bum outside the top 100. He probably would have won Roland Garros, at least one of the clay masters, a solid chance to get Wimbledon, possibly one of Canada/Cincy, and most likely USO and end up with a solid chance for 3 slam season and/or YE#1 but it looks so bad I think he might either skip AO or show up to take a beating.

No he will be back for AO healthy, the question is can he return for Shanghai/Paris. That is, unless, he needs surgery.

100%.

I’m not sure how the coaching staff didn’t sight the severe bend in the wrist in his forehand follow through. Most likely that is the issue. A few retired coaches addressed this on YouTube.

JCF knew how to hit forehands. That was his biggest strength. He should know better.

Blatant oversight by his team.

I think he found a chick in Ibiza that he’s shagging. Wrist injury is a pretense for the debauchery.

Maybe he lost all his bitcoin

These are the likelier possibilities.
Well he's doing the opposite of what you said, because he's training everyday and we have videos, so we know he's not injured and we know he's fully committed to the US Open.
That is why he withdrew from Cincy, because playing Cincy would interfere with his training which is a lot more important than doing press conferences and media commitments at Cincy.

Playing tournaments is better preparation for USO than just training

Alcaraz has lacked training, because his doctor said his wrist healed 100% only a few weeks ago.
The genius can work his way into form during a slam, as Federer and Nadal often did, so because Alcaraz needs training more than he needs Cincy, he chose training.

In fact some of Nadal's best ball-striking ever was 2020 Roland Garros, which he came in very cold.
Nadal played in February, and never played again until September at Rome where he lost in the QF 2-6, 5-7 to Diego Schwartzman.
Then Nadal played Roland Garros and never dropped a set, and beat Djokovic 60 62 75 in the Final (with a closed roof).

I think it will be a poor decision to play at this point and if he does I see a retirement more than a loss.

Best thing for him would be to keep slowly training and start with the laver cup and that 6 kings tourney where he can take it slow and no loss affects him.

Then maybe finish with paris and end year championship.
I agree. Sounds a bit reckless going into possible grueling 5-set matches when coming back from a wrist injury. I think its more likely than unlikely that he withdraws. Best thing is probably starting with BO3s and see how the body responds.

The tour is such a low quality right now (Zverev making slam finals and winning), and Djokovic looked a mess at Wimbledon, it will be very easy for Alcaraz to cruise through the US Open without any lead-up.
His natural ability and clutchness will easily overshadow any rust (y)
Even his training sessions which we are watching everyday this week are more impressive than anyone playing matches currently.

Federer AO 2017. Only a few (three) Hopman Cup matches after a six-month-long break before the AO. But in practice he had been playing for hours and hours against guys like Pouille, Escobedo and McDonald. Alcaraz still has time to ramp up his training, so USO is not entirely out of the question yet, I think.

So to bet on who wins the next slam all we have to do is pick the guy who leaves the most weeks between hairdressing appointments?

Goes to world cup in the midst of beginning training to come back in under a month.
Grows out his hair.
Puts cornrows in his hair.
Removes cornrows.
Withdrawals from Cinci.

Does this sound like a guy ready to play in a slam?

I liked watching him as much as anyone else but I never associated his game with 'cruising through'. There was normally some loss of focus or dropped serve or even a careless set somewhere along the way. Playing best of five has usually been in his favour as it's given him time to outlast his opponents physically and make up for any loss in concentration, but after such a long break I'm not sure that's going to be true at the US Open this year.

A year ago he didn't drop a set before the final. And in that one against Sinner he only dropped one (won 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-4).

At AO this year it was the same until the cramps in the SF. He hadn't dropped a set before that, albeit overall it wasn't as convincing and dominant as at the USO. Anyway, he squeaked by Zverev in five, and then dropped one more set against Djokovic.

I know what you're talking about though, but just that he seemed to have also improved in that regard. Not that I agree with Alcaraz easily cruising through this time around. Who knows in what shape he will ultimately be. But other top players have shown that bouncing back quickly on a high note is possible.
