Thriller

Semi-Pro
"He just blew me off the court, that's all," Djokovic said after the match, per the ATP website.
"He was better in every segment of the game... it was a pretty bad match from my side, but amazing from his side. He definitely deserved this result."

Djokovic entered Vienna hoping to gain a few more points and he admitted that securing the year-end No. 1 position affected his performance against Sonego. Djokovic, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, was nowhere near his usual level and at times he even looked disinterested.

"Yes, clinching the No. 1 had an effect on me today. I’ve done what I came here for, securing the number 1. And I move completely fine with today’s result. I'm healthy and looking forward to a strong finish in London," Djokovic admitted, per Carole Bouchard.

As can injuries, marital problems, getting out of bed on the wrong side, ... all of those can have an effect on the game but none of those is tanking. If you are feeling physically and emotionally spent, your best effort on the day might be atrocious by normal standards. Djokovic had clearly been struggling all week, it is not as if this result has come out of nowhere.

A fine will not be enough if you want to set an example of him. He needs to be banned for a minimum of 6 to 12 months.
For the integrity of the sport (not being Fedal biased here hehe), this needs to happen.
yeah they can give him Nadal too to really set an example that no-one's safe here

hell, they can add tsitsiparas and street - the latter will have his hands full soon so it will come in handy

to produce such a lame performance and not care about it, right after clinching a record he had been coveting for so long... it really doesn't have a good look, especially for someone often acting as if he desperately craves for love and recognition

to me it sounds like a big middle finger raised in the face of the whole tennis world, without any ounce of respect... but maybe i'm misinterpreting things?

I'm not trolling dear. I'm asking a legitimate question.
Sorry, don’t think it’s a legitimate question. This whole “tanking” thing, if you take it seriously, appears to be the result of taking some of Novak’s comments out of context. If Novak had actually confirmed that he tanked it would be in all the sports press now.

what appears to have happeNed is that Novak clearly said he was beaten by a better player. He was then asked how he felt about it and he truthfully explained that his mind was a bit elsewhere because he had already reached YE1.

Should the ATP board penalise him with match fee amount or something??

Or the rules are just limited for players who've a history of it and others can get away with it?

Or because he is a top player and has special privileges and exemptions from certain rules??

(Referring to djokovic sonego 2-6 1-6)
What Djokovic has done is an insult to Tennis. They should:

Lol!

Fed comes to AO semis hobbling like a gramps in 2019! Even Novak mentioned it.

Fed’s never tanked against those guys.

If he wanted to pad his H2H he would have stopped playing Novak years ago.

He’s tanked as many times as he’s retired.
He didn't want to make it look obvious anymore ....he tried to lose to lose Sandgren hard

Djokovic decides how and when he wants to lose.
Sounds like the Serb me and my husband beat 3 times in a row in billiards yesterday. “I always win, when I lose it’s because I want to”
:p:laughing: He is a funny one and we like to play billiards w him, but these comments are just priceless! Makes the win ever sweeter.

Or like the soccer game a few weeks ago ;)
No one saw that one coming...

I like how the people like you will talk through your clenched teeth about "evidence", despite knowing full well that he tanked. You are the same people that blasted Kyrgios for tanking, only he didn't hide it, and took one to the chin, like a decent person (compared to Djokovic in this case).

St Nick be like

I like how you can’t comprehend a very simple sentence. I never said he doesn’t deserve to be fined, nor did I say they don’t have the right to punish him. I said they won’t do it because they have no evidence of him tanking the match. Because that’s the actual title of the thread : "Will Djokovic be penalized for tanking?", not "Does Djokovic deserve to be penalized ?". So stop saying "people like you" when you’re completely clueless about me.

If you guys think I’m defending him, go see my post in the Djokovic news thread, I wrote it way before this thread was made. I was also the first one to severely criticize Djokovic after USO, saying he totally deserved it and heavily defending the line judge that got unfairly criticized by stupid fans. I guess loony fans will only see what they need to see to fulfill their agenda. Oh, well.

Quote pls. I saw no such admission that he didn't try.
Its confusing because even Novak fans saying he tanked and his comments about it proved it. He was there to get the points for n1 and that’s it.
Then other Novak fans says something else.
So you think Novak is in that bad shape to lose like that?

He was clearly distracted and playing in a lower gear, but there's a huge difference between that and:

Oh, you say that when you write that "they have no evidence" in a thread about whether Djokovic should be fined or not, you thought that that that won't be taken to mean that you don't think that he should be fined, because he didn't do anything wrong?

BTW, you are wrong in saying that "they have no evidence" as "evidence" is not what you think it is. His performance which is basically the lowest point in his career, coupled with his admission that he didn't care, because he got what he came in Vienna for is enough of an evidence, and you already admitted to such being presented, you just gave an opinion that "they won't do it" retroactively (in which also BTW I don't see a problem happening), so you basically tried to cheat your way out of this.

So stop saying "people like you" when you’re completely clueless about me.
I say it only based on what you let out here. I don't know and couldn't care less what kind of person you are outside of this place.

So, should he be stripped of his points from Vienna, after the disgrace that he made of his match?

It appears that some people think that the only way of establishing tanking is if a player goes on record saying that he tanked.

Can you read the title ? The thread is about whether Djokovic will be fined. Not about whether he should be fined. So your wrong interpretation of what I said is entirely on you. Maybe you should admit it instead of constantly trying to grasp at straws when you're wrong.

I'm not talking about who I am outside of this forum, but of who I am here. And when it comes to me, you either have a very poor judgment or do that on purpose because you're another fanatic trying to discredit your "enemies". Pick your poison.

A poor performance is not an evidence, it's a poor performance. It's not like throwing a ball away and walking off the court, which is an actual evidence. If they thought the match was a clear evidence of him tanking it, they would have penalized him during the match. And no, he didn't admit anything, actually. Anyone can interpret his words the way they want, but he never said he didn't care or didn't try. Instead, he said Sonego blew him off the court and he wasn't in the mood to play, which is a very poor excuse in my opinion, but not an admission of anything. There's a difference between facts and interpretation, stop trying to mix everything up so you can say I'm trying to defend him when it's clearly not what I'm doing. You're the one "trying to cheat your way out" here.

I've no idea whether he should be stripped of his points and it's not my job to dertermine it. But if it happens, I won't try to defend him, I wouldn't care at all.

No, the thread is not about whether he will be fined, as, as far as I know, no one here is an ATP representative, let alone one that hands out fines. In that light it is absolutely senseless to interpret the purpose of the thread the way you suggest. The thread is about what people think happened which eventually could be a basis for Djokovic being fined. Your bureaucratic approach cracks me up, but besides that brings nothing, and certainly not the correct interpretation.

You are not "my enemy" and no one like you will ever be significant enough to spare a second thought about "discrediting" him. I read what you write and I respond to the written. My judgement is just fine.

Apparently the idea of some people as to what represents tanking, and moreover, what needs to happen to be considered such verges on the absurdity: short of a player demonstratively showing that he tanks there is no tanking, apparently.

"He wasn't in the mood to play" is yet another way to say that he didn't fulfil his professional obligation the way he should. He is not there because he wants: he is there because his profession requires him to go on court and show his current best (or close to it). If he fails to do that (outside of objective reason connected to his performance there and then (like if he is injured etc)), he is not acting professionally: in other words he is tanking. What do you think "tanking" actually means, if not that?

You evaded my question. You have no idea whether you have an opinion on that matter? It isn't your job to determine it, but I didn't ask you to determine it, I asked you what is your opinion on the sanction.

One Djoke fan said that Djoke wasn't in a mood to play. I can see the clear parallels.

Did I say he wasn't in a mood to play or did I just cite his words and added it was a poor excuse from my perspective ? Keep making a fool of yourself. Once again, we're done here.

I like that you regurlarly call him "Djoke", by the way. It just confirms what's already obvious.

Did I say whether those were your words or you quoted someone? No.

Good that you once again remind me that Djoke himself admitted to tanking using the said words.

It's a very unusual and shocking situation, and it's pretty strange that there are people denying that the situation occurred despite Djokovic acknowledging what happened.

We saw Novak playing some great tennis in the earlier round against Coric, and then suddenly against Sonego (better player than Coric?o_O) Djokovic is returning powderpuffs landing short in the court and hitting forehands into the net.
