Or will he end his career never winning the clay slam in Paris?
Is Djokovic deserving of a Career Grand Slam? Well, we'll just have to see....
I think not.
If he does win RG then good for him, he was worthy after all, but so far he has only made one final at the event.
I think this year he had a great run. Had he beaten Nadal I personally believe he would've gotten the better of Ferrer too. Same thing happened in 2011 when Federer beat him is a brilliant match. The 2011 Djokovic against Nadal in RG would've had a good chance. If he can keep placing himself in these positions I think he'll win one.
Yes. And he will win more than one.
He got tripped twice. Once by Federer in 2011 and once by Djokovic in 2013.
I believe he will have a shot, and the last one, in 2014. If he wins it, then it is possible to go for more, if he does not, that's it...
You're back Chico! How many days were you suspended for? We thought you were banned permanently and worried for you!!
Novak will win at least one, most likely next year.
I think he will, but his time is running out. Also, you have to wonder if he loses to Nadal again. Since 2011, he has shown that he is just as capable of beating Nadal on clay as on HC's, but in all three of those years he has failed at the French, two of the losses directly to Rafa. If Nadal gets him there again, will Novak be able to sustain the necessary belief to beat him in the slam.
That's my feeling too, that 2014 might be his last chance to win the French Open. He's come close in his last 2 attempts.
Playing in the same era as Nadal has made it very tough for him or for that matter any player to sniff victory at RG.
interesting. Why do you think he doesn't deserve a career grand slam?
I'm not really sure Djokovic can beat Nadal in best of 5 on clay. He's only pushed Rafa to 5 sets once in his career so far. But then I guess, Rafa might not always be playing good.
Novak got deceived in 2011 , 2012 and 2013 . The irony is it was not Nadal that stopped him.
2011- on fire Federer, wanting revenge for the previous 2 majors
2012 - rain stopping the momentum and delaying the final, when Novak won 8 games on the trot and leading in the 4th set
2013 - that silly overhead miss, after leading in the 5th set.
Nadal has had more than his share of luck, it will even out.
clay warrior wont be coming back from a 7 month layoff next year.
also he has some key/critical wins over him now.
translation: nadal is likely to more ruthless at the next RG.
nole will go in with some doubt at RG anyway.
so I am not seeing it in 2014.
I think he will, but as others have said, his time is running out, and I don't know if he'll be able to take another crushing defeat there and bounce back.
Nothing in your post suggests Djokovic was the best player in those years at RG.
2011 - Federer couldn't accept Novak as his and Nadal's equal yet. Novak was gunning for the #1 ranking with a win in the final. Federer played one of his finest matches on clay to stop Djokovic.
2012 - Novak played great and won 8 games in a row when the court got wet and Rafa frustrated. Under normal conditions the next day, Rafa immediately broke back Djokovic and took the match and championship. Winning 8 games in a row doesn't mean you're gonna win the match after losing the first 2 sets!
2013 - Nadal just too good for the Serb in the 5th set. He choked in the 4th set failing to close out the match. Still Djokovic couldnlt do it.
The problem for Novak at RG is that it's not only Nadal who can beat the Serb on clay.
RG is Wawrinka's favorite tournament and with the French crowd behind him (Stan is from the French part of Suisse), he can upset Djokovic. Then there a few others, Delpo, even Berdych who team Djokovic would want to avoid.
Of course Nole will win RG at least once. His biggest challenge is obviously Nadal, but Nadal can't keep winning it forever. You guys seriously don't expect Nadal to keep dominating RG in his late 20s and early 30s. Nadal is likely to decline before Nole does and that is when Nole will pounce, however I wouldn't be surprised to see him beat Nadal in next year's French Open final.
At least once beating Nadal in 3 on his way.
The only way he'll ever win RG is against a broken down, far past his peak Nadal. He had his chances to get wins in 2011-2013, he squandered them.
What's funny, is how 2013 would have been Novak's best chance with Rafa coming back from injury! Barring an injury to Rafa, I presume Rafa will have an easier path to the championship.
For Novak to win next year, he'd need some good luck like crappy weather, an injury to Nadal, Soderling to beat Rafa, or Rafa to focus on other GS instead of the French!
It can happen with Rafa wanting to improve his Wimbldon chances by rediscovering his grass game, for which he may have to go easy during the clay season.
Yes, that could be the case. Of course, I think Rafa should focus on AO, W, and USO next year.
errrhh no. Make no mistake, Rafa wants to leave a legacy at RG that will take years and years to break. He wants people to look back years from now and marvel at his clay records.
He sure would want to do better at Wimby, but not at the expense of RG.
He already has left a legacy at RG that will take years and years to break. If I were him, I would focus more on trying to rediscover my lost grass court game. I mean losing to random journeyman in the first couple of rounds of a major he has won 2 times is definitely not a good thing for his legacy.
Well, to be fair this year's match should count as a final. There's also no way he would have lost against Ferrer.
Even since before. They had some really close matches in 2008/2009.
I'm sure he will do better on grass next year. He's gonna want to prove himself on grass again. Just not at the expense of RG.
This doesn't mean Novak cannot win RG. He sure can. But Rafa will make Djokovic or any other player earn it the hard way.
Sometimes you may find me making Djokovic jokes but I actually respect the guy and think he deserves to win the FO at least once.
can't imagine him not winning one.
Actually, I thinking you might be right. I mean, despite his hard court showings and US Open triumph this season, French Open is still the only slam where he is the outright favourite, so I don't think he should/would jeopardise his best chance of winning a major every year by trying to improve his grass game.
At least twice.
I think 6 or 7 times.
Yep, I agree. I know many people think (wish? ) he would prioritize Wimbledon over RG, but he didn't even do that back in 2007, 2008 when he hadn't won Wimbledon and winning it was his biggest tennis ambition, he's not going to do it now.
Plus, how would that even work?, he's not going to make half an effort at RG, it's simply not the way he is. If he plays, he's going to give it his best effort. The only way (especially considering his knees) would be to skip RG to prepare for Wimbledon, and he'd never do that.
No, I think that is too much. He had chances to get this much, but missed them in 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013. 2-4 is more realistic. Doubtful he will get to 4, but at least 2 is certain.
I'm sure that, despite what he prefers to say, he has a good idea of what his chances at RG are. In fact, I think it was in 2012 he said RG when asked which slam he'd prefer to win.
This thread is about Djokovic winning RG, not Nadal. Thank you.
Yes, next year.
We're talking about that. Novak would have better chances if Rafa decided to prioritize Wimbledon. He won't though.
What Nadal does is irrelevant. He can't stop Novak from winning RG any more. That is clear after their matches in MC and RG this year.
I'm surprised by the number of people in this thread thinking that 2014 would be his last chance... why?
Rafa is probably gonna win 2014 edition, but Novak is 26 yo, why wouldn't he win the french in 2015 or 2016 ? There is no reason...
Well, because it's gonna get tougher each year for Novak. He isn't gonna be the only one capable of winning it (apart from Nadal of course). Also we don't know how good Djokovic is gonna be at 27-28.
To say that bringing Nadal in a "French open win" discussion is irrelevant shows how powerful your trolling capacity is
The guy seems to be so healthy (diet, fitness, etc.) i don't worry about him, even at 30 i think he'll still be great.
I mean as long as he doesn't troll like that on the court:
...he will be fine
That was a funny game by Schmokovic!
Anyway, he'll never ever be in the GOAT discussion, unfortunately for him and his fans. Maximum of 10-12 grand slams.
Novak's fans are not greedy and do not care about silly GOAT discussions.
10-12 is plenty and I would be quite satisfied with this. Much more that many of us could even imagine in 2006-2006 when he was staring his climb to the top.
You never know, how many he'll end up with.
Personally, I don't believe in "Goat" crap. I believe that a small group of LEGENDS is there, which includes - Laver, Borg, Lendl, Sampras, Agassi, Federer and Nadal. No one can be termed as a single Goat!
Djoker can reach that group by the time his career ends. Depends on how much more he wins.
10-12 would be great indeed, especially when you had to face Federer+Nadal+Murray.
I don't think Djokovic can win 12 slams. Maybe 10, most likely 9. He's already lost way too many finals to take his slam count to two digits.
2014 can be a good year for him. Maybe 2015 too, 2016 will be tough.
12 is a maximum of course, but i'm always careful with him, you never know...2011 was impossible but he did it
who else is going to...? declining Fed? Nadal w/o his usual 7-months' layoff?
Separate names with a comma.
