Will Federer beat Nadal again?

The conditions favor Federer over Nadal. Federer prefers fast hard courts like Shanghai. So? Federer is better than Nadal on hard courts overall, not only on the fast ones but also on the slow ones.

IW:

Amazing.

Non stop digging in stats and no time to watch or think about tennis.

Apart from previous results not having influence on future ones which part of Federer is 37, is not hitting his FH very well and conditions at night are slow as molasses you don't get?

You are right. Nadal is overall better on slow hard courts than Federer.

By the way, 32 years old Nadal is playing good but not espectacular this tournament. 37 years old Federer is playing at an amazing level. He utterly destroyed great rivals like Wawrinka and Edmund. How was Federer able to break Wawrinka and especially Edmund's serves so many times? Federer's return game is ultra-impressive this tournament.

Honestly, Edmund gift-wrapped him that one lel. Fed is playing good tho. Not amazing, but good

37 is 37. We have seen his level plummet without warning many times. Honestly i won’t be surprised if he loses to anyone, let alone Nadal.

I would be a little surprised to see him lose to Nadal, since he hasn't done so since AO'14 and I think he's no longer scared of Rafa.

He isn't going to get caught unawares, like sometimes the top players do against young up-and-comers like Tsits/Coric or journeymen like Istomin.

Just like Djok does, he's going into that match thinking "no f'ing way am I losing to this guy again."

Yeah, 37 is 37, but he has been more durable than Rafa, and it isn't like Rafa hasn't seen a similar decline in his movement as well.

The return is most certainly one of the biggest keys to his recent Dubai/IW success. But tbh, he didn't have to do all that much to break Stan or Kyle. Kyle broke himself by not being able to hit any first serves, and Stan did what Stan does. If he's not in Stanimal mode, he's in full blown wild error mode.

The lack of respect for Hubert Horatio Humphrey Hurkacz and the great Russian composer/conductor Karen Khachaturian is a.s.stounding. That is the SF I can’t wait to see, not the 39th episode of As The GOAT Turns, a tiresome soap opera that reaches silly levels here of whose fanbase can be more preposterous than the other.

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of our Lives. :-D

Did you seriously just refer to Edmund as a great rival?

Wawrinka is a great player but still a way off his usual form. Fed is playing well but don't think he's been that tested, the real test comes if he faces Nadal, though I wouldn't be shocked if he suddenly plays a terrible match and loses in the quarters

I say unlikely because Nadal will be extra motivated not to lose 6 times in a row, but if Federer plays his best tennis, then Nadal is as helpless as a stranded deer in the headlights.

If they meet, sure. Fed is playing better than Nadal at the moment. Not guaranteed of course but Fed would have to be the favourite.

I think the bigger question is will Fedal ever beat Djokovic again, as I asked in another thread

Nadal's the betting favourite. Although I think Federer has a good chance.

This IW court is supposedly one of the slowest HC in history, which could be why Nadal is favoured.

To all those who made fun of Roddick and Hewitt et.al, Wawrinka is a great rival suddenly and specially Edmund! Lol it's hilarious!

But now youve said the opposite.

You don't have a great track record of predictions yourself

I actually do haha

Maybe you just can’t differentiate my real predictions from obvious trolling

I said during the AO that Nadal would get his butt kicked at the first formidable opponent he came up against. I’ve said that numerous times (with the screeching that goes along with it).

I don’t think I’ve been wrong since.

I thought Federer would get further than he did, but I never thought he was actually gonna win the AO.

I was also right at Wimbledon. People were saying “Nadal is winning Wimbledon”. Well, no.

You are right. But Nadal is also slower at age 32, and he needed that speed to defeat Federer in the past mainly due to his defense/speed.

Federer has always been more of offensive shot-making, so the lost of speed is not that important for his game as compared with Nadal who is more defensive. Even though Federer has also declined at age 37 of course.

Nadal looks fast, focused and comfortable. Federer looks too vulnerable on the bh side, and has been slow around the net. I favor Federer if he gets a really good start.

The court is slow, but seeing that you are trolling I don't expect that you make an effort to explain how Nadal being relatively slow or Federer being an aggressive shotmaker will overcome that little problem.

On a serious note, let both get to the semis first but can't say for sure this time if they do meet. Still favouring Fed as he seems to be serving well and Nadal still hasn't solved his return problem of recent years. But grandpa's form is quite unreliable of late so you never know.

More like how can Nadal beat Federer here? He hasn't done crap against Federer since he lost his main advantage vs Federer which was prime vs old. Now that they are both old he needs Barcelona or Monte Carlo to beat him.

He doesn't have any return problems recent years. Since 2017, he has lost to only 1 server in Grand Slams on hard courts (counting the loss to Cilic, where he retired injured, but still was struggling before the injury). And he lost to Müller at Wimbledon but survived to Delpo. I only see a return problem on grass, Nadal is the worst returner on grass of the Big 4.

Nadal's position of return is highly effective as demonstrated by the fact that he has better return stats than Federer both on clay and hard courts.

Federer was old at age 26, we get it. Federer was also old in Dubai 2006 or Miami 2004.

You don't have to go that far back in time. Djokovic AO 2019. You wrongly assumed I am only talking about servebots. Actually a swinging serve of decent pace with variation causes lot more problems to him. Started with Muller, then Fed at Shanghai 17 and now Djokovic at AO.

Incorrect. Nadal did not have a specific return problem against Djokovic at the AO 2019. Everything was bad that day: speed, backhand, mentality, return, to a lesser degree forehand. And we all know it was the first competitive tournament of Nadal in 4 months, he lacked rhytm and faced easy rivals before the final.

As I said, if we watch his overall GS performances on hard court since 2017, we observe he has no problem against big servers. Only problem was Cilic, the match were he retired injured but already was in trouble before the injury.

Fed also has 6 AO titles to 1 for Nadal but trails 1-3 in the H2H. H2H with individual players on HC is different from overall ability on hc, and though Federer has done very well on HC vs Nadal in recent history, I still can't forget Nadal has often been Fed's worst matchup even on courts Fed has overall been more successful on

Other than the AO, I can't think of any other instances regarding the bolded. Talking only about HC here.

And besides, only a fool would think AO 2012 court favors Fed in any way. Not even close.

And AO 2014 was a match Nadal was 99% a favorite to win due to Federer lacking confidence after his horrible 2013 season.

That's true.More than that, the problem in their rivalry is that they played too much on the hardcourts in the period January-March and only one time in the North American HC season.

I'm not saying AO courts favour Nadal but he's won what is it, 3 titles on rebound ace to 1 for Nadal? Of Course Nadal was favourite to win, my whole point is Fed having more titles at an event doesn't automatically make him favourite vs Nadal at that event.

Apart from the AO he's lost to Nadal in Dubai which he's won 8 times to Nadal's 1, Cincy which he's won 7 times to Nadal's 1 (yes I know he was in terrible form that year but still), I think he's 2-2 at Miami where he has 3 titles to 0...
