The Grand Slam

Hall of Fame
You know, the calendar year one. All four in one year.

He won three out of four this year and three out of four in 2004. He still has yet to capture the French Open title, which has prevented him from both obtaining the calendar year Grand Slam and the career Grand Slam.

Will Federer do it? I think he still has a pretty good chance...

I dont know. I am pretty sure he will win the French Open once, maybe twice. Nadal cant win it every year. Still he have already lost the Australian Open that year or years he wins the French, or he might succumb to the pressure at the U.S Open at the end. I give him a 40% chance to do it, which is quite reasoable, but less then average so I voted no, but I hope I am wrong.

It'll be surprising if the majority votes 'Yes'. Federer'll only be the third man ever to do it (second in the Open Era), behind Don Budge and Rod Laver.

Nope. He had a shot this year. But I can't believe he'll have the luck and mental toughness to do all 4 in one year.

He will win the French, though.

I think either Federer will win the CYGS or he'll lose the Australian Open final and not win a single slam. All or nothing for Fed in 2007.

I think he will. It's just a matter of time he'll win Roland Garros, because Nadal is beatable. The only problem is in Fed's head when playing Nadal on clay. And the perfect proof is this year's RG final.

NEVER................. NEVER.......... fed will never win the french open as long as there is nadal...... fed will never be that lucky again next year to win 3 grandslam..... fed time is comming to an end..............................

wtf makes you think that? you think it was luck he won 3 grand slams this year? he wasn't even playing his best tennis. As long as he is healthy, plays good tennis, and loses that mentality vs. nadal on clay, he should be able to get a calender gs. he could probably just move his schedule so he peaks at olympics and grand slams.

I don't think Federer will win the calander slam as long as Nadal is around. Nadal made the finals of Wimbledon, why can't he make the finals of Australia and win.
then it doesn't matter whether he wins RG. Though if Nadal gets hurt I think Federer can do it.

Fed is already showing signs of "fading". He didn't perform as well at this year's USO as he did in past majors. He had more unforced errors and double faults as before. Furthermore, the younger players are becoming more experienced and more confident. So, if Fed wants to accomplish this Grand Slam, his only chance is to do it next year, IMO.

Yes i do feel Federer will win 4 grand slams in one year. Its just a matter of time before he does it.

Well, he's running out of time. If he wants to do it, he better do it next year or 2008. You see, tennis is a very physically demanding game. Once you hit 28, it just becomes almost impossible to play against youngsters who are 20 to 22 years of age.

here is opinion...i hate federer i hope he never wins a slam again------here is fact federer will win the french---i think once but he will never win all four in 1 year...i feel that when nadal hits his prime 21-26 he will start to make more finals and take out fed....other ppl like nalbandian will play fed earlier in torneys and pose threats to him...my feeling is that 2007 will be his last chance to win all 4 majors....i feel like with all great players, that he will eventually begin to lose his command (mind u he will still be a top 5 player) but he will eventually break down....i see max 2 majors for fed in 07 aussie open and us open...nadal and gaudio in the final (gaudio will do well at the french next year/or even robredo) and at wimby...roddick murray, yes nadal, safin in the early rounds and nalbandian will all be out to take fed down....after next year i see the field becoming more involved in major finals

Federer will win Wimbledon next year without a doubt.

federers game is now better suited for hard courts then grass now...i say that if roddick can take off a set of him on hard...it will be even closer on grass

This year, Roger Federer was two sets away from becoming the undisputed GOAT.

Unfortunately, I don't see it happening in reality. I don't think Federer will have a grand slam. 28 straight Grand Slam match wins on distinct surfaces in face of competition like Nadal, Roddick, Hewitt and new threats such as Gasquet seems pretty much impossible to me. Not to mention, Federer is getting older and the number of chances he will have are going to diminish.

Do not misunderstand - I hope and pray that I'm wrong. Nothing would delight me more than to see Federer win the Slam.

if Federer is going to do it, it has to be done within the next 3 years. After that it's going to difficult because he will be past his prime, age wise.

as great as Federer is, i think he will have a hard time winning the French open even once.I hope he does though.

Yes, clearly he's on the wane....not. This year he performed better in slams than last year (by making this FO final).

Everyone's different. Rarely do players peak at 20 to 22 on the men's side. Most players peak during their 20's, but on this one I'm not sure you're completely up to speed as to how the patterns run.

If Federer manages to win the French Open, he will also get a grand slam that year. He's already had 3/4 twice, so the only missing piece is the French open.

Care to back up your post with some stats - I really doubt that he has more UE and more DF at USO this year! And I believe he has more winners this year than last year.

Stats, eh?

Australian Open 2006
Winners (excluding service): 256
Unforced Errors: 238
Aces: 51
Double Faults: 15

Roland Garros 2006
Winners (excluding service): 230
Unforced Errors: 247
Aces: 40
Double Faults: 8

Wimbledon 2006
Winners (excluding service): 195
Unforced Errors: 111
Aces: 68
Double Faults: 5

US Open 2006
Winners (excluding service): 254
Unforced Errors: 158
Aces: 66
Double Faults: 9

Just LOOK at Roland Garros! Seven matches with more Unforced Errors than Winners? Horrible.

I doubt that Federer will win the Grand Slam. I voted no "no", but I so hope he will do it.

Federer is imho the second best player on clay in the world at the moment, best player of course is Nadal. The only way I see federer winning Roland Garros is if Nadal will be beaten by someone else so Federer won't have to play Nadal in the final. Still if he would play Nadal in the Final, he'd still have a chance, but it is a very small chance. Winning the first set 6-1 this year against Nadal at Roland Garros, shows he has a chance against Nadal on clay, but maybe it's only a theoretical chance. I'm quite ambivalent..

Well Rafa could always pull out of RG (I hope that doesn't happen...but life's unpredictable..look at Safin 2005.)...so Roger could do it.
Yes, Rafa is beatable...but I think it's much harder to get him out of your head...which is Fed's main problem regarding Rafa.
So..unless Rafa isn't at RG...I doubt it.

Roger definitely has the best chance of anyone that I know of since I've been watching tennis. If he can't do it then it'll be a loooooong time before someone else even sniffs it.

With Rafael Nadal around, it's going to be very diffcult. And no, I'm not just referring to the French Open ... there's no guarantee about the Australian if he runs into Nadal.

As much as I like and admire Roger Federer, I kinda think we've seen his best year he's gonnas have. One of the problems with being a Star is, everybody is pulling at you and placing huge demands on you. Like Roger said, he gets serious pressure to win the Swiss Indoor Tournament now that he's #1 and represents Switzerland. That's gotta break you down sooner or later.

I believe Roger will win at least one Slam each year for the next few years without doubt but winning all four is huge no matter how great you are.
Also, the insane scheduling of the Slams really need to be altered imo. Wmbledon two weeks after the French is stupid stupid stupid ... Within the first 6 months of the year, these guys have 3 Grand Slam Events to contend with.

My vote is No ... but if anybody could do it, it would be Roger.

Career grand slam? Yes. Calendar grand slam? No, IMO.

I think the last three years have shown just how difficult a feat the calendar slam is (not that a career slam is exactly a walk in the park, either).

Federer has been (almost) injury-free and as dominant as any player over a three-year stretch.

He came incredibly close this year (2 sets at RG away), but I just can't see him continuing that level of dominance enough to have another season like this one.
