Will Federer have a stadium named after him?

Will he get a stadium named after him at a major? After his retirement of course.
What do you all think?

But he gave everything he's got for Team Oz in the Davies Cup battles and everything he has to offer...

Given the time lapse when Bjorn won the last of his RGs and Wimbies, it would seem there was no hint at all that his name will ever be on the 2 bigger stadiums of each respective Open venues.

This is a tangent, but I've always wondered why Louis Armstrong Stadium shouldn't be called Sampras Stadium. After all, Armstrong, as talented a musician as he was, wasn't a tennis player; it would be more fitting to have a 5-time American winner's name on it.

Louis Armstrong had lived near Flushing for a number of years before the stadium was built, and was a massive cultural icon in one of America's most turbulent periods. There's no way they are changing the name.

It would be a nice touch to have the new grandstand court, planned to be built later this decade, named after Pete.

Well Louis Armstrong lived in Corona (right next to Flushing and a large historical black neighborhood) since the 1920's - on the site of the current stadium there was "the Singer Bowl" built during the 1964 worlds fair.....after Armstrong died in 1971 NYC and the parks dept renamed the Singer Bowl - Louis Armstrong Stadium.......in 1976 - 1977 when the new tennis center was being built the USTA promised to use parts of the existing stadium and keep the name in honour of Armstrong. So the current Armstrong stadium is exactly on the same spot as the old Singer Bowl/Armstrong stadium.....in fact if you ever go there you will find all the plaques and marked points of interest that explain the history of the site. Back in 1978 when the NTC was opened the USTA and the city of NY had a ceremony honoring Armstrong, the site and the history of the site.......

Thanks for this tidbit of history, I didn't know about it.

Now that I think about it, If Federer manages to win Wimbledon for the 8th time they should name Centre Court after Federer. There isn't really any British player that will ever reach past 7-8 slams, so why not put Federer's name on it?

There isn't a sampras stadium...

Despite being an amazing player, Sampras doesn't seem to possess the love for tennis that Roger does and isn't near as charismatic. Sampras is sort of like the Kareem Abdul Jabbar of the tennis world, no one will question his greatness, they just aren't on the first list of people to be recognized or receive offers.

The basel stadium will probably be named after him. GS probably not unless wimby decides to build another court

I guess you haven't seen "Airplane". The man is a fountain of charisma in that film.

Maybe America is dysfunctional about race relations and wants to address her white guilt over slavery with token gestures.

Switzerland should just rename itself to Federerland, modify the flag by adding 17 stars and a golden eagle.

Roger should have a major named after him. Wimbledon for example. They could call it Rogers Cup or something.

p.s. oops. did not see previous post :)

and in basketball the maurice podoloff trophy for MVP should be called after MJ

This was more than three years ago. The venue, to the best of my knowledge, is still St. Jakobshalle. Maybe they're waiting for him to retire? I guess it would be pretty intimidating playing Roger Federer in Roger Federer Arena.

It hasn't been renovated yet - politicians and responsible people are still planning and talking whether they should rebuild the whole arena (which actually would make more sense but costs more and takes some time) or just renovate it.

Scrap that, they should rename the entire tournament to the Roger Federer Swiss Indoors Open. If not, then the Swiss clearly do not appreciate Fed enough.

It's sad but true - there are a lot of Swiss people, even sport fans, who do not appreciate Federer enough or at all. That sounds weird for many not here though. Federer is way to big for Switzerland and has become someone who isn't a Swiss star but a worldwide one. No swiss person has ever been that famous and in Switzerland it's also not exactly common to show how famous/rich you are. Humbleness is what is needed to be widely accepted.

Plus, some people resent him having moved to Wollerau/SZ (his residence is not Basel/Binningen anymore) - Wollerau is known as a place with low taxes...not exactly the move you'd expect here from someone who certainly has enough money.
Some are even angry that he denied playing Davis Cup for Switzerland in several years.

Overall he is loved, especially in Basel of course and by many other Swiss people but there are enough who don't think a lot of Federer.

Examples:
While Federer was ruling the tennis world in 2005, people voted (by calling in at a huge TV show) "Thomas Lüthi" for the Swiss Sportsman, because he won the 125ccm WC. Main argument by people who voted him: "Federer has won one already [in 2004]".
That was the last time Federer showed up at that show. He won again in 2006 and 2007, not in 2009 though when Didier Cuche (ski star) was voted. At that time, Federer already was too far away from the Swiss and was more a famous person with Swiss roots than representing Switzerland.

Yeah the Swiss Open will have their main stadium named after Federer.

However I really feel Wimbledon should have one. Sampras DID win 7 times in 8 years but Federer has the most Finals with 10. Maybe the 3rd court will be named after him.

LOL why should the YE #1 trophy honor him when there is a guy who finished as the YE #1 more times?

For fun, if all the Majors were titled after their greatest Champions:

Djokovic Open
Nadal Open
Federer Cup
Connors Challenge

That's exactly what I'd expect. When people start to amass money they don't want to lose a penny of it. Just look at how many tennis/sports players live in tax havens.

Good post - beat me to it. And he ran into some trouble in that neighborhood trying to build walls around his compound higher than the local law allows.

And I'd also add the clash with the tournament director of Basel (who came out sounding like an idiot) - but it was obvious that Fed held out for his appearance fee - many thought he should have given the home city a discount and was being greedy.

What about Hewitt then?

I'm sure Hewitt will have a stadium named after him at some point...in fact wouldn't surprise me if in Adelaide (Hewitt's hometown and where he won his first ATP title) they considered renaming Memorial Drive's main court after him, if they did I don't think you'd hear too many people complaining as it would be fairly fitting.

No chance of them renaming Rod Laver Arena after him though.

As for Federer, I'm sure he will have a stadium named after him as well....highly doubt it will be at one of the Slams though as like someone said they are correctly named after nationals from that country. I'm surprised after Halle named an Avenue after him they haven't already named the Stadium after him as well.
Most likely though would probably be Basel for obvious reasons.

Fed is not GOAT on any slam. He's tied with Sampras at US Open and Wimbledon. In fact, Sampras didn't lose to baseliners or clay courters in his prime on grass.
