Last year Roger barely won Wimbledon and he had a very hard time against the then choker the Joker. However this year in a replay of the USO federer lost to the Joker at the AO.

Roger is playing some of the worst tennis of his career. With the emergence of the Joker his chances have just become a whole lot tougher. And then of course there is still this other guy by the name of Rafael Nadal.

So what do you guys think?

i think if nadal loses at wimbledon and roddick as well i think he'll be pretty set. i think he'll win wimbledon. but i don't expect roger to win the us open or french.

Nadal came pretty freaking close. Plus as the number one see he would have to face both! Thats got to be tough.

I do agree. It will be very tough to win any slam this year for Roger. at wimbledon, he has the best chance but he will have to beat nadal and Novak both, which will be very tough. Novak has proven that if healthy, he can be a force on grass courts. and has proven that he is better than federer on hard courts.

It would be a shame if he won any Slams this year playing at this level. If he wins his 6th Wimbledon in a row playing like crap, I'll be pissed off at the state of tennis today. He needs to get it together.

Well that's just it. He won't win any slams playing at this level. The question, essentially, is will Federer regain past form at some point this year?

i think nadal will again win the french and djoker will win the US open. I think fed is set for wimby though, i think he will win it for yet another year.

Federer has a pretty good chance at all three slams, IF he regain his past dominant form.

If, however, he does not, Nadal is the likely choice for the French and Novak or Roddick for the US Open, with Wimbledon depending on the other top pro players and Federer's form.

The way I see it:
FO - Nadal
USO - Djokovic
Wimbledon - open, probably Federer if he manages to avoid to lose from Fishes or Worms or similar.

I hope Gasquet can find his form and play like he did against Roddick. don't see him winning it but I would like him to make a good run. I think Federer has a good shot. He lways seems to peak at slams much like Sampras. I don't see Nadal getting there though.

:edit: I am discussing Wimbledon.

Roger Federer almost won all four last year. Everyone remember the 16 unconverted break points???? He is playing much worse this year, but there is no indication that he can't find a way to play a good GS tournament and win one.

He didn't almost win four. In order to almost win a grand slam he would have had to almost beat Nadal at Roland Garros. He didn't.

he was closer to only winning one slam than winning all four

I know; however each event is considiered a grand slam event. What I am asking is how many of the three remaining grandslam events wil he win this year....if any at all.

I think Roger is playing a lot better now and is improving. The deciding factor may not necessarily depend on whether Roger rediscovers his 2007 form but rather on the level of his opposition.

Roger in fact played rather shoddily in the Wimbledon final last year. He was really lucky to pull it out. I think he'll be vulnerable there. History suggests that he'll lose there.

You call 6-2 (or 1) at the end close, and didn't Federer come close at the French Open couple times!

This match was actually a lot closer than the final set said that it was. Recall that Roger was down 15-40 at 1-1 and 2-2 before gaining the momentum to close the match out. The previous sets that Roger did win were in tie breaks where Nadal won his two 6-4, 6-2. Just because the last game did not appear close doesn't mean that it wasn't.

Yeah, the score does not tell the whole/true story sometimes, just like the Monte Carlo Semi between Nadal and Davydenko. The score was something like 6-3, 6-2 to Nadal, but Davydenko was the one dictating the plays most of the time.

As a tennis fan, did you guys like it when Federer was winning everything or right now ? I prefer right now because it is more exciting not knowing who would win the tournaments (not that I dislike Federer)

Nah, I don't understand that statement. He won three, and had 16 unconverted break chances in a fourth. How that translates to almost winning only one exactly?

He was in the final of Roland Garros, two sets away from the win. Think about it, in 5 years people will look at 2007 as a year that Federer almost won the calender slam.

Nadal will probably win in Roland Garros. But Wimbledon is wide open with Federer's form this season, I see Nadal and Djokovic with a real strong chance at taking the crown there. And I definetly see the USO going to Djokovic. Federer's only real chance is Wimbledon, wether or not he can pull his **** together is to be seen.

Will the sun rise tomorrow? ;) I put him down for one. He won't win the French, there is way too much competition at the U.S. Open on hard but I'll give him Wimby.

I am inclined to agree. Fed is playing poorly this year so far. If he wins another Wimby at this level, then I guess he was "just good enough." This level suggests that today's tennis is not that high in quality.

Two things to remember:
1) in tennis you're only as good as your competition forces you to be
2) someone has to win the slams, no matter how bad

Can you imagine the Wimby officials declaring "No one will be permitted to win this year's tournament; all the players were manifestly not good enough."

Hopefully, Federer will win Wimbledon. I can't see him winning the FO with his current form.

If he does win Wimbledon convincingly, I hope he dominates the HC season & take the US Open, spanking Djokovic 6-0 6-1 6-2 in the final!

Otherwise he'll end up with 1 GS, be #3 in the world & Mirka will date Djokovic.

I am sure that in five years we will still have a lot of uninformed people.

Was 2007 his best year?
Was he playing at his best level? Or was it an earlier year?

Personally, I always felt like in '05 Federer was at his most amazing. He "only" won 2 Slams, but there is no shame in running into a red-hot Safin and losing 9-7 in the fifth. I'm a little bit hazy about his performance against Nadal at the French, but I remember it being closer than his FO finals against Nadal. He trounced Roddick at Wimbledon, then played some spectacular tennis against a rejuvenated Agassi at the US Open. Agassi was blasting the ball to the corners and Federer played excellent defense, and then out of nowhere would slap a forehand winner.

He lost to Nalbandian at the end of the year, but I chalk that up to lack of fitness due to an injury he had. He won the first two sets, and it was the only match up where I saw Federer look up to his box in the fifth set with an expression like "I'm too tired to go on any more". Yet he still made this crazy comeback in the fifth set and pushed it to a tiebreaker.

So yeah, I'll take '05 Federer over any other. '06 is when he really started to look vulnerable due to all the losses against Nadal. It was the first time that he started looking downright average out there, shanking backhands and looking lethargic, although it was limited to clay.

I agree with superman. 2005 was definitely Federer's best year in terms of quality tennis. It was a shame in a way he didnt win more then 2 slams since the qualiy of tennis he was playing that year was 3-4 slam quality, but a year like last year the tennis he was playing wasnt really quite 3-slam quality and he got a bit lucky to win 3. So it has worked both ways for him.

I think Federer has been playing well again despite the tough beginning of the season. I do not think he is playing badly but rather well and I hope he improves to put in a solid run for a slam and that he achieves at least one this year.

ZERO (0)

Why?

(1) There are Nadal and Djokovic standing in his way in the SF and finals.

(2) There are others to upset him in any rounds.

(3) His games are more and more predictable.

(4) His fitness level is at his worst in last 5 years.

Nadal came pretty freaking close. Plus as the number one see he would have to face both! Thats got to be tough.

not necessarily. and if you recall that at the australian open federer's movement against djokovic was pretty lousy, and he's improved it somewhat, as well as the us open court is much faster, which federer excels at. i will agree that nadal was damned close last year at wimbledon, but he's had a bit of a falling off in recent months, and consequently may not be as much of a challenger this year.

djokovic is good, but dont assume he will whomp on federer every meeting, and dont assume federer will have to play both 1 after another. the draw doesnt work that way. only thing for certain is he would have to play nadal in the final, if nadal gets that far.
