Question is simple.

Given the circumstances, none of the favorites seem to be playing very well, will Henin win her 5th crown?

Or should we be expecting some other people to step up?

My outsiders are: Safina, Dementieva, and maybe szavay.

I think Henin still has a good chance to win it again. Even if she's doing horribly everywhere else, I still believe she can excel at RG.

Radwanska's favorite surface is clay and she didn't even make past the first round last year; I'm sure she'll improve.

Dementieva's been playing well also and I could see her making a run.

Jankovic is always sturdy and her style should suit clay, so her too.

Henin has a 0% chance. No way she will last the first three rounds even.

Dementieva has a good chance and so does Serena. Sharapova will most likely get an easy draw as usual.

Ivanovic is playing like crap. Jankovic is crap too. Kuznetsova is doubtful. I don't know about Venus yet...

Safina could go far if her confidence is still high.

Henin is playing awful this whole year. She is not going to win FO.

Ivanovic, Jankovic or Dementieva have best chances at the moment.

Even if and when Jankovic is "playing like crap", she seems to scrap out wins (think AO especially first round).

Right now, Justine Henin's chance of winning this year's Roland Garros is about the same as Hillary Clinton's chance of winning the nomination for the democratic party.

With Justine at RG, anything can happen despite her poor form elsewhere, but I doubt she'll win RG this year unless she gets a kind draw in the early rounds and manages to "play her way into" the tournament.

It's going to be a tossup of double faults and sloppy errors and the one that squeals the most when their opponent messes up wins. I'm looking at you Shazza.

Agreed with u.

Judging on performances in Berlin, Dementieva and Safina has some chances..

But I still have faith in Serena....

I highly doubt it, shes going to be going in there with absolutely not confidence or belief, and she relies very much on confidence especially on clay, maybe if she can mash a good player or two in the first few rounds she can start to build some but I don't see it happening, I think Dementieva is playing very well and will win it

I highly doubt Henin will repeat at Roland Garros this year. I think Serena, Venus, and Sharapova all have chances this year in winning the French but the way Henin has been playing lately especially on clay, the chances are slim.

Hello Ruroni, I voted no she doesn't as there are far too many solid challengers who might win, and just as many who people would bet on yet very likely will end up losing just when you think they will win. Women's side is rather like this year's Rome tournament: unpredictable, can't rely on any "sure" thing.

Don't forget to include the Williams sister, who usually come out of the blue and overpower the rest of the field with there brute strength.

Venus doesnt have a hope in hell at the French this year. Henin even in her worst form has a much better chance then Venus. Venus hasnt made it past the quarters there in a long time, usually loses early there, hardly plays or does anything on clay anymore, and just doesnt have a prayer at the French ever again.

Henin in even mediocre form would be almost a shoo-in for the French. She is far better then either Serena or Sharapova, or any other current player on clay when even in mediocre form, which says more about the current womens field of clay courters then it does about her. It is sad that Henin being so badly off form exposes how hapless the current womens field is, especialy on clay, since there is no other worthy winner, leaving one to wonder who will be the default winner of this years French if Henin doesnt get her act together.

I wouldnt go that far. Henin's 60% would still be almost gauranteed to win the French. There is no worthy opponent to her on clay really. Right now she is at about 20% but it isnt impossible for her to reach about 60% somehow by the French and if she does she will win again vs the current pathetic womens clay court field.

I really DO believe that Henin is a amazing player but ...hell ..people ?? I mean ..Henin at 50 % won´t stand a chance at winning the title *rolingeyes* .....

dont underestimate the current field ..I know that it´s weaker than before but there´s also Henins nerves you know ?? PLUS :

Justine lacks match play and confidence !
But this time she definitely will have most of the difficulties at the first rounds...if she manages it to go further she will regain some of her strong form and has a real chance to win the whole thing again ..but I think the likes of Sharapova and Williams want to have a piece of the cake too ;)

Serena and Sharapova are totally unimpressive clay court players. Serena won her French Open before Justine began to come into her own and back when Serena was a much better player then she is today. A diminished Serena is still actually really strong on faster surfaces, but on clay her game is now far below what a potential French Open Champion should be. Once Justine came into her own in 2003, Serena hasnt won anything big on clay since it is her worst surface by far with her wildly inconsistent strokes and bad footwork. Sharapova is even worse on clay then Serena, and someone like her winning the French with her movement and overall game on clay due to Justine's terrible slump would even further expose and embarass the womens game for what it really is these days (not that how bad the current womens field now is, is that much of a secret already anyway). Justine's current horrendous form is the only reason there is any talk of either of those two winning the French, and yes Justine at about 50% is still better then either on clay, especialy Sharapova. It is really sad then when Justine goes down like she has for now there arent better people on each surface to fill in so you dont have talk of such mediocre clay courters now having a chance to win the French.

I think Henin has still a very good chance at winning the French. She hasn't show her best tennis yet. But hey... she's lost to Maria, Serena and Safina who ended up winning those tournaments.

Sharapova played amazing at the AO. That first set against Justine i think its still the best set of this season by a mile. But i haven't seen Maria played like that ever since. And don't expect her to on clay.

The Miami lost to Serena was embarrasing but after her 3 Grand Slam QFs losts in a row to Justine she was hungry for revenge. She didn't show any of that on post matches though. Especially on that awful final against Jelena.

I thought Ivanovic had a shoot but she's been playing pretty unconsistently. She struggled to get to the semis at Berlin, and didn't face any big names. Ja nkovic seems to have it all, but just never delivers whenever she plays a top player. Kutzy..i don't think so.

What Sarina did at Berlin i think was pretty impressive. I'd love to see her going all the way. Also Dementieva, she may finally get her due this year. But i wound't count out Justine just yet.

After a stellar 07 campaign for Justine I think she might have reached the point of a burn out. Based on the results of the first quarter in 08

But you'll never know - she has the swagger of a champion. SHe may come of out of the rutt and surprised everyone else.

serena the best chance to win
ivanovic second best chance

safina and dementieva are too big of the chokers to win something that big, eventhough both of them playing some impressive clay court tennis right now.
unless both of them make it to the final and one of them have to win.

dementieva has proven to choke on the big stage (US Open against Kuznetsova, and French against Myskina).

Safina will probably choke in the semis or quarters.

Well Considering Henin called it quits....this is a real crapshoot. I would personally love to see Jankovic, Ivanovic or Dementieva get their first majors. Dementieva has been playing well and has hopefully learned from her past slam finals, both of which she could of won had she been playing better. Jankovic is a fighter and has a good game for clay. Ivanovic was last years runner up and only did so bad last year in the final because she got up an early break and choked miserably, she is a bit more experienced now and is ready to lift the trophy. That being said...Serena has been winning lately and Venus always seems to pull together and make miracles happen at the majors even if she looks like a longshot going into them. But to me Roland Garros this year will not be same without Henin, and whoever wins will just lead to the debate of "would she have won if Henin played" and we'll be putting asterisks and all that....but personally...go Dementieva...time is running out for her to win one and this could be her last best shot.

Even if she comes to her senses and comes back to play this year she's not at the right state of mind to win any GS this year. She needs to get her mind back and then her game. She's a mess right now. I don't think she knows what to do with her career. I think Ivanovic, Jankovic and Serena would win. Serena is not in good shape, but she can pound her way through trouble and hates losing, I can't stand her for the life of me but she fights hard.
