Will lines people ever be phased out?

Though some players question the accuracy of hawkeye, its probably no more innacurate then the bad calls some lines people make..

As the hawkeye technology inevitably improves, do you see lines people finding themselves out of a job?

Nah, it doesn't look line lines people are anywhere close to being out of a job. Hawkeye has proven to be very accurate and, most importantly, consistent. There are tons of thread about the accuracy of hawkeye on here though.

Don't see it happening any time soon, probably not even in my lifetime.

Despite some question about Hawk-Eye's calibration at Wimbledon this year, it appears to be a very accurate system for the most part. A few years back it seemed to be accurate to within a few centimeters. Currently, it (usually) appears to be accurate to within a few millimeters. Even so, it is probably a mistake to depend solely on technology to make line calls. At the pro level, lines persons are a part of the game. I don't believe that players are willing to eliminate/minimize the human element.

Additionally, the Hawk-Eye system is not infallible. Some if its very close "calls" are somewhat arbitrary -- the close calls may be correct or they may be almost correct. Sometimes, its just the "luck of the challenge" on very close balls. The makers of Hawk-Eye claim that the average accuracy of their system is 3.6 mm. An article from 2008 indicated that the ITF would accept Hawk-Eye's accuarcy if it called a ball to be 1 mm IN when its true position was actually 5 mm OUT.

Many venues only have the system set up on 1 court. Not sure, but wasn't Hawkeye available on only 2 or 3 courts out of 19 at Wimbledon this year? It is undoubtedly too cost prohibitive to use it on all courts or at all ITF venues.

If so, it won't be because of Hawkeye.
