Will monetized YouTube channels fizzle out?

eb_tennis_247

Semi-Pro
It looks like the online tennis content proverbially exploded in pandemic years and led to creation of dozens of highly “monetized” channels and many others.

It looks like now that the many of them are running out of material and seem to fall into same content schemes,
with viewership of the oldest ones dropping abysmally,
and many stopping to post any new content.

Do you agree with this observation?

Which channels might survive — in your opinion?

Which ones might (or should) die off?

I watch to learn... so say I am 4.5 and I can only watch 5.5 and above and get value... yeah I may learn something by watching 5.0s but why bother when there are better options.

so only the best will survive.... like any other business.

They pretty much all suck tbh. Most of the content is skip. My favorite is a small channel called Life on the Tour. I binge that ****. Real good stuff. Seem like real good guys. Big fan. The changeover is good as well. Tennis advocate will always have content. Will probably always be a market for court level video and behind the scenes, as well as player interviews like tennis majors. I watch that primarily over a given channel for instance, most of my saved videos are court level hits that I want to watch tape of

I don’t watch tennis content on YouTube to blow my mind and unlock new heightened levels to my game.

Tennis is my number one hobby and if time allows I’d rather listen to mediocre tennis material than turn on Netflix and scroll through the choices for 45 minutes before passing out.

Tennis spin is awful, of course he is. But between the driving I do all day long for work and the hour before bed, of me time I get, I’d still rather queue those videos than most anything else.

Now if TV didn’t also suck, I’d see your point. But the average tennis content is no less entertaining than the average content Hollywood craps out. I’d rather listen to tennis stuff in that case.

Most are god awful content farms like Tennis Spin. The sooner he leaves the platform the better.

This is the true content farm

There is so much great tennis content out there but I think that SO much stuff being repetitive suffocates the viewers.
How much more of “3 key points for more topspin” can one watch?!

I do watch good racquet reviews daily as a fix for my racketholosim and as the escape from the bleak news reality.

Come one — a prospective of WW3 vs. Yonex EZONE 98 gen. 8 … EZONE v8 wins any day even if all my fav reviewers have to play nice with the brand and say something positive about the MINOLON . Yeah, you’ve heard me R&R Luka …

c'mon he aint that bad...
(personally i always wondered what it was like to open a tennis shop... he made me realize, "i don't want to open a tennis shop" :P)
'specially if you're a gear nerd (though i prefer tennisnerd for gear related stuff)

I remember having a stringer refuse to string kev/natural gut once. Harry sounds like he could be like that.
Did you ask him to string it at 72 pounds like Sampras? He is correct in refusing because it is beyond the manufacturer's recommendation, can warp the frame, and even injure you if the strings violently come loose close to you.

Yes, I am a real fanatic, subscribed to every channel, from the most obscure ones (like 30 subscribers) to some mega channels like Intuitive Tennis or Feel Tennis.

Here is what (I think) I see:
  • Tennisnerd seems healthy
  • Jeff Solzenstein Tennis Evolution seems done. Hyper repetitive. Nothing left to milk. All the possible flat, slice and kick serve cows are gone.
  • Online Tennis Instruction - I think they have mostly fizzled out.
  • Daily Tennis Instructions - nothing recently (an excellent channel otherwise IMHO. A real content)
  • Brent Abel’s tennis — Lots of very good tips for recreational players but too much of everything. Not really a hot channel for how hard he tries.
  • Fuzzy Yellow Balls - up and down
  • Essential Tennis - lots of subscribers but on a downward trajectory. VERY repetitive. Lots of milking from a very few cows, but always creative in running a content promotion business.
  • His REAL TENNIS is officially RIP
  • Play Your Court — had a potential but were always too sales and content milking focused to get to even 100K subscribers (for the type of online tennis business and content promotion they run)
  • Total Tennis Domination almost nothing recently
  • 2 min tennis — Milking it hard but not much to milk
  • Feel Tennis Instruction has slowed down, lots of repetitive stuff.
  • Top Tennis Training is a powerhouse but they have slowed down the content production and are getting repetitive
  • Intuitive Tennis seems to be trying to stay relevant and is coming up with all kinds of creative things but I think he is also resorting to standard view-bait content tricks more and more (racquet tournament, etc.) that will fizzle out.
  • Karue Sell — up and down. I think his ATP / Challenger adventure will fizzle out because it is not really that interesting and his performance is not out of this world.
  • Tennis Files — I think it is where it wants to be
  • Tennis Unleashed - same
  • Crunch Time Instruction — definitely down. It is mostly a tennis content sales and content milking channel with malnourished cows
  • Meike Babel - I think on the downward trend. Never really reached the top, despite some good stuff.
  • Iron Will Tennis - never really took off. Tried too hard, too aggressive with some major production flaws.
  • Connecting Tennis - RIP content
  • Tennis with Dylan — seems healthy
  • Tennis House - :cautious:
  • Tennis Mentor — seems healthy but down somewhat. Ash is a HARD worker.
  • TennCom - seems healthy and active but cannot tell if they are getting where they want to be
  • MPTennis - seems healthy and active but not a high traffic channel
  • TPA Tennis is repetitive. Lots of good early content but now tries to milk every cow around
  • Performance Plus Tennis - o_O
  • Brian Dabul - way down
  • Edgar Giffenig (great content) - RIP content
  • Tom Avery — nothing much
  • Time Value of Tennis - RIP content
  • Jorge Capestany - mostly RIP content
  • Mark Sansait - never really took off
  • Revolutionary Motion - They try too hard with low return.
  • TENFITMEN - started strong, fizzled out
  • One minute tennis —:censored:
  • Jeff Lewis -
  • Tennis Spin - was fun for a year or two but now it a total clown show
  • Star Tennis Academy fizzled out. Had some VERY good stuff.
  • Pieter Becker is to me like a TPA tennis
  • Hammer it Tennis - RIP
  • Tennis Beyond - ‍
  • Tennis Doctor -
  • Venus Williams -
  • Stokke Tennis seem to be on the rise. Good stuff! We’ll see.
  • Joel Myers does not try too hard but his material is top notch.
  • RacquetFlex are inconsistent. I love them.
  • Gem Tennis has an ambition.
  • Patrick “the boss of the content bosses” Muratoglou is an industrial base and almost a monopoly.
  • Complete Court Inc. (Tennis w. Gary) — great content but low output. Underrated.

dude you are real fanatic.

pls check out 'racket brothers', seems on par with raquetflex;

shows ya that on one hand tennis is infinitely complicated with so many things to talk about; but on the other hand without real time interaction there is only so much you can do with theory and isolated teaching.

the journal type channels are mostly quite boring as well.... today's tennis in general are just really boring to watch.

What's your review of the TT peanut gallery?

I've made some money with YT on a few different channels, but I was never trying to make it my job. But I think that is what kills a channel personally, when it becomes forced and is like everyone else trying to get view instead of grassroots type content that a creator enjoys, just to do it. Meh.

I think that YT content producers could do more for themselves and the viewers by producing:

- tailored instructions towards specific player groups and demographics (3.0, 3.5,4,…; gender and age groups, …)

- have a long-term progression training series like how Intuitive Tennis had with Shamir, Safin, etc.

- “invited” content — have guests share tips, like Tennis Spin used to do with Coach Gu million years ago or Tennis Nerd with his friends. Have D1,2,3 players share tips, college or club coaches share key points. Stokke Tennis and Tennis Tribe do this a little by asking guests to give tips to ~4.0 players …

- more detailed, quantified and objective equipment reviews like how Foot Doctor Zach does. Have a YouTube version of @TW Professor — run experiments, etc. I think only @ACT comes close to this standard, but even he does not really measure and test using some objective measures.

How many videos can you keep making on technique? There are only a few ways to hit a ball correctly for each shot. If you buy a couple of tennis textbooks on technique, they will pretty much cover all aspects and technique textbooks after that will be repetitive and redundant. It is the same with technique videos. So if someone wants to keep a channel going for a long time, they need to have other creative ideas rather than just technique improvements to help rec players.

Seems like Fuzzy Yellow Balls has been getting into strategy which seems like a good way to differentiate and supply new content, (I don't subscribe but get emails for videos which I usually don't watch b/c they're way too long)
