Will Nadal and Federer have to play more smaller tournaments to keep up their ranking

I knew if I either put Fed or Nadal I would get criticism from the Nadal fans or Fed fans, so I included both. Anyway, Djokovic has won every tournament (except FO) that he has entered. Nadal won 2 (besides FO) and Djokovic didn't play in those two. Fed won one 250 in Dubai at the beggining of the year. But if Djokovic wins everything Nadal and Federer won't get very many points, because they primarily play in the MS1000 and GS events. The lower ranked top ten players (Fish, Monfils, etc) are playing 250's and 500's this week. Sooner or later those points will add up, and they will rise in the rankings. Federer and Nadal only play a few 250 and 500 events each year, but only because they are warm-up torneys. The question is are Federer and Nadal possibly go down the rankings to lower ranked players.

P.S. I should have included Murray, so include him in your discussion.

Yeah, I hear Nadal has got a wildcard into the Abbottabad Open (Pakistan) and will face Aisam Qureshi in the first round. Its a Futures or Challengers.

Fed and Nadal are waaay ahead of everyone below them (Murray is almost 3000 behind Fed atm and he is 4th) so adding more 250s/500s wouldn't really have much effect.
They seem to be doing fine as they are.

But everyone says they are declining.

In the future perhaps, but right now they're both still reaching Finals and Semi Finals of Masters events fairly consistently (Nadal more so), with a semi at a Masters being worth more than a win at a 250 and more than a runner up at a 500.

I think they'll both start playing more 250's as a way of gaining some much needed confidence though.

Even if they are declining, it's like, on a 100-point scale, going from 90 to 85 when other top tenners are at 75 or whatever. There's still a big gap and as long as they do better consistently at the MS and Slams, that point gap is more than enough to overcome not playing 2-3 extra events. Remember that only the top 18 results + tour finals count. So those extra events only are relevant to the degree that you do better in them than the other small events you've played in.

Plus, compared to last year, Federer's run from since the Aussie Open up to today is considerably better. 1000 points or more better by my reckoning.

If they want to shorten their career, yeah they would. But I doubt it. They are not machines. They need to rest. Winning a 250 event would not help Rafa to gain confidence against Nole.

Little chance they can catch up by winning those low-tier events.
Making late rounds in bigger events is worth more points than winning 250/500 events.

Neither Federer or Nadal care one bit about rankings. They know they have to beat everyone drawn against them in a (GS) tournament and they both know they can beat everyone. So seeding won't concern them.

He will be playing the futures tournament in Serbia just to show Djoker fans who's true boss as a record turnout is predicted this year. The surface is the swimming pull that Jankovic used to practice on when she was a child.

Nah he changed his mind after figuring out it was bin Laden's hiding spot

On a more positive note, he will be playing the futures tournament in Serbia just to show Djoker fans who's true boss as a record turnout is predicted this year. The surface is the swimming pull that Jankovic used to practice on when she was a child. He has a tough draw but I think he'll make it to the quarters, finally figure out it's not clay and pull out citing hair loss.

I thought the Swimming Pool chest was Ana Ivanovic's thing. Is that Jankovic?

.
Of course i know about Abottabad and Bin Laden. The whole world knows, lol.

We'll probably have to start a New Delhi Open with ONE ATP point so that Federer can win a title. We'll have to make sure everyone else gives a walkover.

draw size should be 3 so fed gets automatic finals. We can give wild cards to Devvarman and a cow to complete the draw, but slip either the cow or devvarman an old samosa so they withdraw from the finals. With that one point, fed is now in a commanding position to pull away from the lower rankings and grab the year end #1 ranking.

Done.

Due to some strike, we didnt see any entries from other players. The only two players that signed up For New Delhi Open are Roger Federer and Tennis Monk (wild card). Tennis Monk with draws.
