The USO this year was an opportunist for them(including the depleted field), because Nole had a brain fart due to his uncontrolled temper.
And what did we witness? One of the more bizarrely pathetic matches ever, where two guys battle to out choke one another. The game at 5-4 in the fifth where Zverev surrendered his serve was outrageously bad. Yet people here still expect him to become an ATG.

As pathetic as it was, I thought the 'breakout' slam win by a player born in the 90s would officially start the new dawn.

Roland Garros answered that.

If Djokovic breaks the record, he broke the record. Let it go.
I notice many of the Djokovic fans are acting like Fed fans are in some kind of meltdown over this. It seems clear Fed fans know Novak will almost certainly break the record in March and are fine with it. Same thing with Nadal tying Roger after he won RG. The narrative is so completely false it's laughable: "Fed fans moving goalposts bruh! Fed fans in meltdown as GOAT Nole shatters another of his records!"

Where are these posts of meltdowns? I do have some Fed fans on ignore, but I haven't seen any of this.

Not meltdown. Denial.

Pretty much I gave up on these youngsters. At first I thought the flopping/choking/mental breakdown was going to be temporary, but after years and years seeing endless disappointments, I have zero faith in them. The USO this year was an opportunist for them(including the depleted field), because Nole had a brain fart due to his uncontrolled temper.
for now yes.
but it will be embarrassing for one of the future batch of youngsters to keep losing to a 60yo Novak and 66yo Fed, no?

Thanks so much for not answering the question. What Fed fans are "in denial" about Nole passing Roger in March? I ask this and there's never one single response. Because there's none of this going on here, it's simple mendacity from the Novak crowd. They want the Fed fans to be in tatters when it simply isn't happening.

Fed fans weren't "in denial" when Rafa tied Fed and they're not in denial about March, 2021 and the weeks at #1 record falling.

Most aren't. Few loud ones are however. OP is the epitome. Gold standard. Has been, and will be.

A technical question here: how will ATP ranking work after 1/1/2021? Will portion of 2020 tournament result still protected (like for example now Nadal still has his 2000 points from 2019 US Open) or everything strictly back to 12-month result?
Or old system (strictly 12-month result) won’t happen till 2021 Indian Well tourney time?

Thanks.

I think they stated until march 8 rankings stay at 24 month cycle and afterwards they will decide depending on the pandemia

Which means even if Djokovic can’t retain his AO title in January 2021, he will still hold 2000 points (from 2020 AO title) for a while (till some time in 03/2021)? That is good for him but I feel weird, though same logic applies to other players for their other tournament wins as well.

I think the moment they start 2021 season as is the only logical conclusion is to keep the 24 month cycle until end of season and then drop both 2019 and 20 results from rankings

By the way, the record that Federer still owns and that Djokovic will quite possibly surpass in a few months, is only from the Open Era.
There are 4 tennis players in the history of tennis who reached more than 310 weeks as number 1 and, therefore, managed to be in that position for longer than the Swiss.
If the Serbian finally reaches week 311 as number 1, it will be cause for applause, praise and admiration from all but he will not have broken the historical record that is held by Bill Tilden (368 weeks weeks as number 1).

Passive aggressiveness at it's very best here. You too @Nole Slam. I understand that you guys are fans and a little shy :giggle: It's ok though. Btw @DSH what is your play here? Nadal trails by two years at #1 :-D. Really I don't think Fed fans are that out of sorts about the record. Djokovic has bluntly stated he's after it and the rankings system is at his disposal. The obsession with catching Federer is very flattering. Congrats on making it to the 300 club that Federer built (y)

What a thread. Shows that in tennis world so many things change. Fed improved on his count from 302 to 316. But Nadal and especially Djoker held it much longer.

Unless Djoker loses in AO, the record is pretty much in the bag

310.

Does not matter.
Even if Djokovic loses in the first round, he will retain his 2000 champion points.
(Not only him, any player will keep the same number of points as Australia 2020 unless he exceeds it in 2021, which in the case of the Serbian is obviously not possible).
The ATP already decided so a few weeks ago.

So, what Djokovic and Nadal do in London will determine whether Nole will beat Federer's record in the second week of March 2021 or on the contrary, Bull can cut the number of points and if he does, he would have a small chance of being the number 1 in the ranking again when the Australian Open ends, since the Spanish player only managed to reach the quarterfinals in the 2020 edition (360 points) and will have the possibility of adding points next year if he passes that instance.

Anyway, be it in March or later, it seems to be inevitable that Joker will surpass the 310-week record as world number 1 still held by Federer.

is there a link to this decision?
I looked on ATPtour.com and didn't find any decision about ranking points

Any Fed fan would choose Nole overtaking him in weeks at 1 than Nadal winning WTF and AO. Unless they're like Fedal fans who hate Djokovic with a burning passion.

The weeks record is nice to have. It will always be in question a little though no matter what I post or someone else posts. It's pretty much guaranteed that Djokovic can do whatever he wants including take a vacation. I'm not losing sleep over it. He doesn't have the slams and Nadal doesn't have the weeks or YEC or well, a lot of things LOL. Do I think Covid has helped Djokovic here? Yes I do. Am I going to post about it every single day how it did? No. Only when someone acts like it was a regular season and nothing unusual like a pandemic happened. I only ask for fairness when evaluating the achievement. Federer was there first, therefore Djokovic has a target etc. Another words surpassing Fed's #1 numbers doesn't mean much in the big picture. Fed will still be the lone member of the 300/20 club.

Novak is gifted nothing and was damaged by the pandemic for weeks at no.1 and for not being able to fight for Wimbledon. Anyway, he is no.1 fair and square, pandemic point system or not.
I agree. Novak didn't get credit for the shut down weeks, didn't he?

He was definitely hurt by the pandemic. Uso was his own fault and stupid but he could have easily won another wimbledon and likely would have stayed 1 all year long

And in 2100 nobody will care about this Big 3!
:(
Nobody will care about me in 2100 either, that still doesn't make my dead grandfather taller than me.

In other words, everything is still relative, records achieved in the current era are more relevant than the prehistoric ones, as the competition is significantly tougher.
