Will or should Rafa play WTF?

So the question the next few days is if Rafa will play WTF, and should he?

Obviously there is much to gain here:

  • First WTF title
  • YE#1 to tie Fed and djoker
  • Rack up more weeks at number 1 if he does get YE#1
  • Strong finish to the season
However, he has never shown massive interest in winning WTF before, never been huge on playing for weeks at number 1, and while YE#1 is big, he is focused on slams.

So question comes down to health. Don't see how a tear can heal fully in a few days, so he will likely have to play with some sort of injury/pain. He tried this throughout USO09 and it proved costly as he was out for a month, and was unable to perform at his normal level. If this is the case, I do see him trying to play a couple matches and try and get some points, but if he feels it will continue to get worse, he will withdrawal is my guess.

He is still in good position for YE#1, but he might have to watch from the sideline and hope for Djoker to fall short (doubtful he won't at least reach final).

A month out could prove costly for AO20 preparation.

Difference between Joe and Rafi is 640.
Rafa should play and beat Berrettini or Zverev atleast.
And then hoap that Djoker loses one RR to maybe Fraud or Lad.
By the end of RR Rafa leads by 440 but maybe doesn't qualify.
But that one match he won and the one match Djo lost make it necessary for Djoker to win the whole tournament.

Now Rafa can hoap someone beats Djoker in the semis or the finals.
Sitting out is basically giving up on the race.

The ATP Finals is one of the biggest five tournaments in the world. There’s the 4 slams and the ATP Finals that make up the 5 most important and legacy defining tournaments in the world. If Rafa does not win this tournament before he retires it will be a HUGE hole in his legacy. He knows it, his uncle knows it and all the tennis world knows it. So YES, he should definitely play in London starting November 10th. My pick is Federer defeating Djokovic for a record setting 7th ATP Finals title.

I ve thought about it and as you say an abdominal strain won't just disappear in a few days and he won't suddenly be pain free. ATP finals is a week away. So question is also how he will be able to prepare with training etc.

I definitely see a possibility of him withdrawing there, but at the same time I have a hard time seeing him just hand over #1 back to Djokovic so he will probably show up and have a go atleast.

Maybe he'll show up to London and try, but I doubt he finishes the tournament if he does.

An abdominal strain is the kind of injury that he could make worse by trying to play through it. He'd be wise to listen to his body and shut down the season now, allowing for a proper off-season and go into Australia fully prepared for the first time in a while.

But I also wouldn't exclude Rafa playing games here either cause it's quite convenient that he suddenly pulls out in the SF where it was enough to not hand over #1 into Djokos hands for YECs. It's all well calculated by him and his team, they very well know about the points and all the different scenarios. There is a possibility of a great exaggaration and just being cautios.

So by definition if he loses then he was not healthy.

According to this logic, Nadal can never really lose to any other player.

He only ever loses to his body.
Hmmm.
Fraud dovotoo in your zeal for mocking RAFA you forgot that the poaster you quoted was just talking about RAFA playing the tournament if healthy.
He was NOT talking about RAFA beating anyone.

Didn't you pretty much steal this from this thread which you posted in :sneaky:

Just trying to scrape under the rug that Fedal are about to screw up three straight ATP events?

This is about Nadal having a shred of dignity. Federer's credibility has been badly damaged. I wonder if the Australians might even boo the guy in January when he finally shows up.:sneaky: Nadal fails the test Tuesday if he enters WTF because:
1. either his withdraw in Paris was BS or
2. he knows he's likely to withdraw from WTF quickly and is foolish enough to risk his health for the money.

The only logical choice is for him to withdraw Tuesday.

What a GREAT plan by team RAFA: give up atleast 240 points when those points could have made all the difference.

Suggesting Yes, but then withdrawal as a premeditated act is an assault on the very essence of tennis.

Your poll overwhelmed me ha. I could not follow exactly what was being asked. But sorry if it is the same.

Blame Djoker? He was supposed to "mail it in" by now.

But very plausible that Rafa withdrew Paris because he did not want to hurt it further knowing he has WTF coming up. Now, if he knows he is unlikely to be able to finish the matches at WTF, he needs to do the right thing. But that can be hard to tell at times.

Its fine. Frankly this deserves two threads. Did I mention I'm already irritated by the sudden rash of Fedulent withdrawals? Surely Rafa is better than this?

You have just joined the V@mos Brigade
The word vamos is the present form of ir in the first person plural.
ir
INTRANSITIVE VERB
1. (to indicate movement)

a. to go

Go being the operative word, as in go home when you think you will lose. And then go to London just three days later if you think it serves your interest in any way.:sneaky:

It is how they stay fresh for the next gens? They are doing whatever they can to keep @Meles at bay? ;)
Its called ruining tournaments. At Paris it gave Shapo 240 points thank you very much. At WTF somebody in the abandoned group will benefit and I'll be shocked if its RBA.:sneaky: Since that leaves pretty much Thiem and NextGen players well that just gets them one step closer to the top of the game without lifting a finger.

Nobody except, perhaps, for a healthy Rafa can beat Nole.

I am pretty sure the only reason Nadal withdrew from Paris was to play in London. It was a minor strain, and the withdrawal was more of a precautionary measure

Play and then withdraw from the SF against Djokovic citing another phantom injury that somehow only affects him when he's about to face Fed or Djokovic.

How many times does it have to happen for a pattern to be seen by some fans? I've said for years, Nadal doesn't really GAF about the tennis season after the FO award's ceremony! He's only been going thru the motions for the most part in the Summer and Fall with a handful of wins that will never balance out his record on clay! He's had just about scenario occur at the YEC from dropping all 3 of his RR matches in '09 to losing a couple finals to Fedovic, but never a win! I can't see that changing anytime soon; esp. since Roger and Nole haven't been immune to the upstarts taking them on and beating them of late! :sneaky:

I think he will either withdraw before the tournament or play and withdraw during the RR. Don't see him finishing the tournament.

He needs to let it properly heal. A week isn't going to help.

He will play, for sure, and depending how he goes, or how Djokovic goes, will pull out if he feels that he will not secure the YE#1 position.

The ATP finals are equally relevant as the Olympics. If Nadal has a "huge legacy" in his resume for not having won the ATP finals, so does Federer for not having won the Olympics in singles.

It's as simple as this - show up, give it a go and take it from there. If he's feeling the strain too much, pull out and what happens, happens. If he's okay or at least partially okay to play at 85%+ level, try to keep the YE#1 or win the trophy ( depending on the health issue / current form compared to Novak and the rest ).
