Will Rafa ever dump Tio Tony?

I mean he's literally the only GOAT contender who has had only one coach during his career. Will the time of change ever knock Rafael's door? Maybe someone would be a better choice as a coach in his 'after establishment' career? What you think? Is there a possibility?

Did Borg ever have another coach in his 1972-1983 career other than Lennert Bergelin?

During his 1991-1993 comeback disaster, his coach was a Welsh karate expert named Ron Thatcher, but that doesn't really count.

Umm Rafa also has worked with Francis Roig and used to spend 3 days a week as a junior working with Toni Colom and still travels with him about 12 weeks of the year. So technically Rafa hasn't had only one coach either.

Cheers

Ash

^^^can you? from 15 to 19 he worked with Toni Colom and still travels with him now. He was also working with Francis Roig up to 2008, who travelled with him for about 10 weeks a year as Toni Colom does now.

^^^Well, he turned pro at 15 so he was working with two coaches for his first four years on tour and yes, he coaches Rafa to this day. He therefore hasn't had one coach through his career.

I'm pretty sure no player has been brought from 4/5 year old to the tour and beyond by one coach only and probably never will be.

Toni has himself admitted that he will stay with Nadal basically until the end of the player's career. He has explicitly ruled out coaching other pros. When Nadal retires his uncle is planning to go (back to) teaching kids at some local tennis club.

None. You don't understand the Nadal faimily dynamic. They are the epitome of "keep it in the family/"

All in all, Tio Toni has always been his coach No1, hence he had no other coaches for a second of his career. End of.

nadal_slam_king told that there are new Nadals coming, so I assume Tio may coach them... Ouch...

I don't see it happening.

First off you don't change a winning formula.

Second, They're not American. They're from Mallorca with strong family ties and Rafa adores his uncle. I imagine Nadal throw away his career before firing his uncle.

The only way I see it happening is if Uncle Toni calls quits, which I don't think he ever would because I feel Nadal has a dependency towards him. He wouldn't abandon his cute nephew. Their relationship would have to develop into something different from what it is now.

I almost started to cry after these words...

That was appropriate that you used the "confused" icon at the end of your post :D The thread indeed makes no sense :D what on earth could a coach teach Rafa that Toni doesn't teach? Rafa is the most tactically versatile player on tour, he overcomes any and every challenge, and he wins 3 slams in a row with this coach :D you can't top that, and no doubt after Rafa passes his prime there will be further solutions from Toni for that too.

nadal continues to improve drastically. maybe if there's a period where everyone has him figured out and he can't change he'll look in a new direction. there's no point right now

I don't know if that guy associated with Borg was ever really a "coach" for him in any way. I don't think he was even a former tennis player to be honest. That was very strange. I would only count Bergelin as a coach for Borg. Borg said that Bergelin was "like a father" to him. They had an amazing player-coach relationship. Actually, they say that the Bergelin-Borg relationship was a true precursor of how many coaches now travel EVERYWHERE with their star players. The Borg-Bergelin tandem is actually somewhat similar to the Nadal-Nadal team. They were very "in synch". Bergelin, it was said would just stare at Borg and at times "will him to a win" in that way.

On the topic of Nadal, I'd be surprised if he ever changed coaches, unless his uncle has health problems, personal problems, or something akin to that. I just don't see him ever going up to his uncle and saying, you know, I'm going to change coaches. It would take something really surprising. If his career suddenly started going south unexpectedly, who else knows how to motivate and coach him as well as his uncle? No one. You don't alter such a winning formula.

And they say parallel universes do not exists.

So, probably not.

Rafa should kick him out. It's time Uncle Tony stopped freeloading off his talented nephew.

I imagine a lot of Rafa's hard earned salary gets blown on Toni's champagne, women and exhorbitant lifestyle.

How can you freeload off someone who doesn't pay you?

Toni gets 0 from Rafa's earnings. His income comes from the glass business he is partners with Rafa's father. That's why he is absent from some of the tournaments.

The way the Nadal family works is the way all families should work. All together, working together for the good of every member of the family. Too bad this kind of family is a rare thing in this age of personal greed and ego driven behaviour. We should all be so lucky as to be a member of a family such as this one.

wait wait, whose good is Rafa working for then. By your description seems like he's goofing off on the court for his own personal wealth, while Uncle runs a glass business and coaches him.

:D

Bergelin had the complete trust of Borg. I remember when I was hanging with him and McEnroe and Vitas, all three of them were practising about 2-3 hours a day on their off days for the US Open.

Vitas would come back and his sister would have a massive plate of pasta ready for him. McEnroe would have burgers, fries, couple of cokes etc... Bergelin would give Borg two pieces of toast with NOTHING on it. No butter nothing, and he would be expected to chew it ad finitum.

Losing to a guy(Mcenroe) who ate like a pig, did whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted blew Borg's mind. He snapped.
