Will Raonic return for USO?

Has anyone heard anything lately about Raonic's recovery progress and if he'll be ready for the USO? The original 4-5 week prognosis would have had him returning either this week or at the USO itself, but it seems like his team has been keeping things pretty quiet since. The Canadian commentators at the Rogers Cup seemed to think that the USO might have been a little too optimistic and that a more realistic return for him would be Canada's Davis Cup playoff against Israel (thus giving him about 2.5 more weeks).

Even if he's not quite 100% and nowhere near being a real threat to the top-tier, I think returning for the USO would be good just for the experience in the long-run. He'll still be a low seed and therefore should be able to get through the first 2 rounds against unseeded players (even if only at 80-90% health) before most likely getting crushed against a Top 8 player in the 3rd Round. But this would be a great way to learn and develop going forward and if nothing else would salvage some ranking points from the summer HC season, while only playing 3 matches and still giving him more than a week to recover before Davis Cup.

I have been wondering this myself. He said on Twitter that he saw the doctor and his hip has fully healed, and that he now has to get back in shape. Sounds pretty doubtful if he hasn't started rehab or anything on it yet.

According to the man himself, he was apparently already beginning work outs by rogers Cup. He was guest-commentating during the Nadal-Dodig match and hinted that he's most likely gonna be back by the US Open. From what I recall he said it wasn't definitive, taking it one day at a time or something like that but it looks good.

He is already finished, he just isn't admitting it yet. Pushed too hard, by hack Canadian coaches, he was an injury waiting to happen.

Nah,he's still young so I think he's going to be fine. But what do you mean he was pushed too hard? I thought he was doing pretty well with his scheduling and such for an up and comer.

The guy was coached by a guy who has never coached anyone of note, and he overloaded the guy. He was an injury just WAITING to happen. Coulda been a contender, but this is a cruel sport.

You're really fixated on writing off Milos, aren't you? Most of us would've liked Magnus Norman to have more years at the top, but his hip wouldn't allow it, so you should stop projecting for your own good. Either that or meet Raonic in person so you can overcome your warped impression of his career so far.

That's what he said on twitter today:

"After extensive deliberation with my doctors + team, I have decided to delay my tournament return until after the US Open at DC vs Israel."

Oh yes???

He has a Spanish coach Gallo Blanco, Raonic is based in Barcelona thanks to the wisdom of Tennis Canada who pays for this.

Watch him play much???

That is the guy who got him after he developed. He is a tall guy who was pushed too hard. And once you do your hip, AND get it operated ON? I am sorry, as far as a top 200 player? Done. Like a tv dinner.

Depends on how serious the hip injury was. The technology involved in hip surgeries has improved tremendously. It's possible for a player to return to top level after the surgery, provided it's rehabbed correctly.

For the sake of tennis, I hope you are wrong.

Btw, weren't you involved with Tennis Canada as a player?

Dr Bjorn99 just keeps posting the same nonsense over and over again... He seems to have an unhealthy obsession with bashing Tennis Canada...

Here:

The researchers at Rush determined that 78 percent of athletes suffering from hip labral tear caused by internal ball and socket joint damage to the hip also known as hip femoral acetabular impingement (FAI) were able to return to their sport within an average of a little more than nine months following a hip arthroscopy. Also, 90 percent of the athletes were capable of competing at the same level as they had prior to their initial hip impairment.

Raonic had hip arthroscopy, and his injury was nowhere near as bad as the ones necessitating 9+ months of rehab mentioned in the above article.

I'm not getting this.

It's obvious coming back at the USO was NOT recommended.

In that case, I don't see how coming back just 2 weeks later is any better, especially in tough DC matches.

We might need him in DC, but not so much as to risk his long-term health.

He should stay in rehab/preparation until that's necessary from the medical point of view.

Forget about the national team interests in such a situation, Milos. Your perfect health is paramount.

I remember coming back myself to tennis from ankle ligament surgery after a serious rehab of 5 months, which included lots of conditioning in the gym. I never had problems after that.

Martina Hingis was rushed back to playing tennis after only 2.5 months after the exact same surgery I had. OK, younger, in much better shape, I said, but I didn't feel well about it.

Several months later, she had to retire from tennis (her first retirement).

Two months is nothing in terms of recovery after a hip surgery. Milos should be very patient. And take those dancing lessons, Milos, seriously :)

I really hope he does, cause with his current ranking he would draw on of the top 8 in the 3rd round. Also I'd like to see what else he can do.

Bummer, but after the US Open, it's back into the indoors. I have a feeling Milos will make a good run into either Paris or Shanghai for some much needed points.

Tennis Canada has improved to a certain extent, at least they finally caught on to the softer kids tennis balls, that only took about thirty years. LOL.

Hey, Raonic might make it back, its within the realm of possibility, but he was a hip or back injury waiting to happen, and I called it, BEFORE it happened.

So in my estimation, he is done as a top 25 tennis player. He might hold top 100 for a while. But then.....

The tennis out there is at such a high level, the BODY of these guys has to be something out of a superhero movie. Its why gym rat clucks like Stepanek stay at a high level, whereas racquet talents like Raonic flame out before they even start.

why are so many people saying Milos career is over/never be a top player now? he injured himself less than 2 months ago and is nearly ready for a return. I don't see any indication it was a career-ending slip...

No, but the timing was horrendous for his game. Grass, hardcourt swing, etc. Would have been far better for him to be injured the entire clay season instead of the time everyone was expecting him to make a move in. His fans definitely resent that even though it wasn’t under his control.

Stepanek is a gym rat? I have never seen him in person but he does have a decent all-court game.

Wise decision from Raonic. No sense in turning the hip injury into a permanent disability.

The picture of his slip at Wimbledon still is clear in my mind. Wimbledon has appologized for continuing play. Big deal!
