Will there be a permanent Masters Series tournament in Shanghai?

Commentators during the Nadal/Ferrer match were talking about how the Shanghai tennis stadium would be used to host an annual Masters Series tournament after the Masters Cup has departed. Is there any merit to this claim? If so, will a current Masters Series tournament be demoted?

Yes, next year will be the last year Masters Cup held in Shanghai... After that, they will host the Shanghai Masters every year.

Starting in 2009 the fall will consist of Shanghai, Paris-Bercy and London as the key events. Valencia will also shift to indoors and accompany Basel as a 500 event (masters series being 1000-events).

Basically the tour structure in 2009 will be
Australian Open --> Indian Wells --> Miami --> Monte Carlo --> Rome/Madrid --> Rome/Madrid --> French Open --> Wimbledon --> Montreal/Toronto --> Cincinnati --> US Open --> Shanghai --> Paris --> London(Masters Cup)

Fortunately. I hate Shanghai`s time schedule - the first match is played at 10:00 am CET and the second at 12:30 pm CET. Only live matches I can see at weekend.

So it looks like Hamburg is getting the axe. I think it's a shame because the Asian schedule is so difficult for us to follow in North America. I wish the ATP website would re-broadcast the Shanghai matches at a time where North Americans are actually awake.

I think you misunderstood me. I meant to ask which permanent tournament would be demoted if Shanghai becomes a permanent tournament. Someone else posted an overview of the 2009 season and I didn't see the Hamburg Masters tournament, so I guess that Hamburg will get axed.

Probably. Our language really sux for its inefficiency in communicating ideas. But, we stumble through.

Last I heard about Hamburg is that such a stink was raised...that it will continue as a Masters level tournament.

i hope its not in shanghai. theres no one in the stands, i think masters cup should be an outdoor tournament in a location that has alot of sun.

No. Hamburg will not be a masters series event. It will be moved to the summer clay series and become a 500 event.

Man Shanghai and Paris being back to back is kind of brutal, even with a week in between.
