I really hope we are proven wrong. From an aesthetic point of view I much prefer watching one handed backhand players. Musetti has a beautiful looking one and at 22 he still has time to develop and challenge, definitely when Novak leaves tour who has seemingly taken musetti out of every big competition recently. More than likely though whoever springs out from juniors with potential will have two handed backhand. Dimitrov had all he strokes but seems to have had various factors go against him in big tournaments (for example randomally picking up injury vs medvedev at wimby this year in in fine form). No, modern game is very consistency focused and 1 hander just cannot match a 2 hander in that aspect. You have to compensate with being good at other aspects of the game like Federer or have the best 1 handed backhand in the business like Wawrinka.
Federer's backhand was very solid, no worse than any 2 hander. Wawrinka and Thiem (and Almagro) could overpower anyone with how hard they were hitting the ball. No, modern game is very consistency focused and 1 hander just cannot match a 2 hander in that aspect. I would take Federer’s personally for the variety offered- his slice was the best in the business and like you say he could still fire winners and passing shots from most places, especially in his prime. Only weakness seemed to be when Rafa pumped into it on the clay consistently, but he figured that out come 2017 ( a bit too late).Federer's backhand was very solid, no less than any 2 hander. I love Federer’s one hander but a one hander just cannot match the consistency of a two hander and it’s an obvious disadvantage on the return. The two hander used to be reserved only for women but weaker men have adopted it over the years and now it has become a staple. It’s unfortunate the one hander has become an almost extinct stroke.Federer's backhand was very solid, no worse than any 2 hander. Just had a look- hits heavy for a kidHenry Bernet will be the next farm animal.
Learned from watching the best.
WrooooongOne handlers will be mostly restricted to grass specialism and they will never be proficient on clay.
Switch hitters in baseball. Rare that they are good on both sides but it is there. It would be nice to see a top player who can hit both 1 hander and 2 hander equally well and mix them up.
