Despite Clay being the his least successful surface, Roger has done something which is quite impressive over the past 10 seasons. He has made the final of at least one of the four big clay events on tour every year without fail since 02.

02 - Hamburg
03 - Rome
04 - Hamburg
05 - Hamburg
06 - Monte Carlo, Rome, Roland Garros
07 - Monte Carlo, Hamburg, Roland Garros
08 - Monte Carlo, Hamburg, Roland Garros
09 - Madrid, Roland Garros
10 - Madrid
11 - Roland Garros

That is 10 straight seasons contesting at least one of four big event in the clay season. It's nice trivia, for sure, but how much longer can he keep up the clay title match appearances?

wow... i didn't even realized about this ..great trivia this also testify that he clearly best clay courtier behind nadal.

Nadal, even after 10 years on the tour, has still yet to successfully defend a title off clay.

And he will have to wait until 2013 to do that , since he didn't win one last year. But I don't find this to be much of an issue, it is reallt the slams that count in the long run.

I don't think he will sweat too much if he fails to ever defend a title off of clay. Picking up the slams is what it is all about. I thought he had a good chance back in Tokyo, until Murray schooled him. I wasn't expecting that.

His earliest chance would be IW next year, but he'll have to win it this year first. He made the final every odd year since 07, and has either won it, or lost to the champion every year since 07. And he has made five straights semis there also.

That is just astonishing; thanks for that piece of info. I think he might continue to do this in 2012; I think sometimes the slowness of clay does help him especially now that he is getting older, plus he plays his dropshots effectively on clay.

Another amazing stat.

Even the spin freak doesnt have that.

I wouldn't bring up Nadal when talking about Federer, especially on clay, just remember the head to head. Nadal has never been embarrassed by the "Great" Roger on the arrogant one's better surfaces.

What? Is losing 6-3 6-0 a respectable scoreline?

Nadal has lost a bagel (6-0) set to Federer on every surface (yes, including clay).

Rodge only player who has bagled Nadal on all surface, so it's appropriate to bring it up.

:D

Big deal. I am sure even Nadal has made the finals of a big HC tournament every single year since he did it the first time. Or hasn't he ?

Compare the no. of tournaments that Fed plays on clay to Rafa plays on hardcourt.

Of course he has, but we Nadal fans don't harp about such trivia. Nor do we pass such things off as earth-shaking achievements like fans of another player do.

Nadal is banging on Federer's door as far as slam count is concerned, y'all should be concerned about that.

WOW. It is difficult to know how to place Federer as a clay courter, he'll never have the RGs and titles to adequately reflect how superb he is on the surface due to a certain R. Nadal.

It's true that Nadal fans don't tend to spout off about increasingly meaningless achievements. As one of the biggest Nadal fans on this board, it makes me proud to see us folks not stoop to such trivial lows.

I love Nadal's one dimensional style of tennis and that he wins so many tournaments on the back of excellent retrieval abilities mixed in with the odd moon ball. Nadal has the gall to mix up his tactics with moon balls because he realises that the aim of the game is to win at all costs and thus he doesn't look down on the moon ball, but sees it as a viable tactics that can reap some fine rewards. When Nadal wastes time on the court and takes questionable medical time-outs, one has to admire just how truly *badly* he wants to win. Forget sportsmanship, his actions and style are the sign of a true champion and BTW he doesn't cry publicly after he loses matches.

Interviewer: So, Rafa, you're going to play Roger in the French Open final for the 84th time, what are your thoughts of that match?

Rafa: Well, for sure che is favorite no? che chas best forechand and serve, so I need play very very good to chave chance, for sure.

Interviewer: But, Rafa, you are now 234-9 against Roger, with 88% of the matches taking place on your favorite surface. Shouldn't you be considered the favorite by now?

Rafa: Well I chave some luck for sure, but Roger chis best chin chisotry, no? Che and Rod are the best. For sure chalways exciting playing Roger chin final, no? But chances chalways not good.

Interviewer: What are your tactics going into the match?

Rafa: Well, I chave to be aggressive no? I can't say yet because I not know, but for sure Tony will chelp.

Chelp sounds cute, i love his style of speaking/speech :p

No problem there. Figured him out at the AO (actually there was nothing to figure out, he just had to up his stamina compared to the lopsided finish to USO).

It must be nice not having to actually be right ever.

I like how losing a match in 5 sets, a match that shouldve been over in 4, counts as figuring a guy out. even though nadal still lost LOL

I was about to tear into you for suggesting that being 6 majors away (the total amount that guys like BECKER won in their whole careers) isn't exactly knocking on the door.. but then I realized it was you, Senti.

Carry on, carry on :)

One of the most logical posts i have read, well put. I don't buy the whole sportsmanship garbage, that is just an excuse for losers. I like your point about the crying in public which is so weak, not even the women do that.

Making one final is no big deal. Compare to 2006-2008 when he made 3 finals each season. He was very good on clay at that time.

And how many clay finals has Almagro made at Masters level?

How many years has Ferrer made the final of a clay masters in succession? What about Novak?

It may not be a big deal, but it is still an amazing level of consistency, considering Federer doesn't often get the props for his clay game. And since there are only four events to contend at the highest level, the fact he has done 10 straight years, is something special.
