Will USTA refund league fees?

IMO, this is the time for the USTA to step up and refund league fees to participants. What is your opinion?
Probably gonna be up to each local league. Many of these leagues probably don't have deep enough pockets to do this. USTA, Each Section, Each District and the LLCs and Active have probably already taken their cuts. Unless Nationals is gonna foot the bill.

Yeah, I think this is up to each area or district, perhaps done at a section level. In mine, my guess is for leagues that are completely canceled or for players that didn't get in a match in a partially played league, they get a credit for a future season.

Quoting a friend I played against last night...he captained a tri-level team which was about to compete in regionals this coming weekend. That tournament was obviously cancelled. But he had already paid the registration fee and court fees for his team up front. LLC advised him USTA would cut him a check to refund him. But that that won’t happen until USTA offices reopen for business - which won’t be until 4/20 (at least). So for now, his wallet is ~ $200 lighter.

NO, they should NOT. They are already strapped for cash as is,,, they can't afford to give out massive amount of league refund fees. It isn't their fault, this virus is making people not play tennis. We will just have to eat this one and hope USTA will have enough money next year to put up nationals and tournaments.. We may not have nationals for 2-3 years.

Um, USTA Inc was sitting on $300+ million in net assets as of 12/31/17 so saying they are strapped for cash is a bit of an overstatement. And that $300+ million doesn't even include the National Tennis Center.

I am not worried about the USTA fees .... but the $100 per league (which had not yet started) that I paid to my club for 3 teams ... that I would like back.

But note .... we are currently "suspended". That has not yet translated to cancelled. Those are two very different things.
If our leagues which were to begin on 3/21 actually instead begin 4/20 (or 5/1 or whatever) then its all good .... if they are totally cancelled ... that is a different matter altogether.

We are in uncharted territory. Every person, family, business, and organization is making decisions as quickly as they can and as wisely as they can. They definitely do not have all the answers but I am certain are working on it as best as they are able .... this has been a rapidly moving target.

I'm a 100% complete unbiased observer, and I don't think they should refund your money, and here's why:

It might eventually affect my daughter's paycheck as she works at the National Campus in the Adult League department.

But that's just my unbiased opinion...

Do you make this stuff up?

USTA isn’t anywhere close to strapped for cash.

2018 tax return. https://www.usta.com/content/dam/usta/pdfs/2018 USTA 990_Final_Public Inspection.pdf

p.24 is interesting. 19.5M for Player Development. Then a breakdown of grants to all the other Sections. Southern gets 11.3M whilst poor Mid-Atlantic only gets 2.6M. Give Southern a bit less this year to pay for all the other Section's league fees refunds. :p

Living in the DMV, I never thought the Mid atlantic was that great. Bad league coordinators and Bad tournaments. Playing in the South is a much pleasurable experience.

USTA simply will transfer all league fees to next league session,, summer or fall or 2020. if all leagues are cancelled for summer then it will transfer to Fall. so don't worry your money is safe. All nationals will be cancelled at this point. lets take this opportunity to instill Dominator Thiem workout regiment and comeback stronger than ever and beat those lazy butt players that sat on the couch watching Netflix and Chill during this off season...……….Yoohoooooooooooo.

The Mid Atlantic must have been hell on earth. The South has been terrible for about 15 years. Horrible league coordinators. They don't do squat except rake in the money.

I can only speak on the tournament experience. It was great, much better than the mid atlantic.

I played one league match at the Campus until it got shut down. I'm sure they will count that as a whole season for me.

Here in Norcal, the spring league's been postponed (tentatively until Apr 20) but not cancelled, so nobody gets their league fees back.

It is stupid hysteria to cancel leagues.
You are telling me that playing a match with opponent 60 feet away is a high risk activity? And the typical match has about zero to 10 spectators.
It is far more dangerous to be standing in line with hundreds of people at supermarket.

You will definitely not be charged if leagues are CANCELLED before start of play.
At the worst, your fees will be applied towards next season.

It is not about just you & your opponent standing 60 ft away from each other. Its about all the door handles/water jugs/table tops/etc. you touched to & from the courts, and all the 'social interaction' that inevitably takes place before & after the match.

Here is what I got from USTA Eastern: See Below... Does not mention any money coming back to players...

To Our Tennis Family,

On behalf of USTA Eastern, we’d like to express our compassion and support as we face unprecedented challenges in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. We know the incredible strain that this has placed on our facilities, providers and players. We will all get through this together—we believe this wholeheartedly. But we also know that expressing our solidarity doesn’t make the current lack of certainty or painful business decisions... (for you... not us).. any easier. (i.e.... we have your money and you are not getting it back... but we are all together.. but we have your cash)

We hope that in the coming weeks, we will receive some answers to our pressing questions. In the meantime, we do want to assure you that Eastern is here to support you in whatever way we can.

Our staff is working from home and fully engaged in connecting with providers in our area. We are actively developing strategies and resources for this ever-evolving situation. We are listening to our organizers and working to create a list of FAQs, which we hope to publish within the next few weeks to assist you moving forward.

Please reach out to us if you need any help or have questions, and check our website for the latest updates. We admit we, too, do not have all the answers, but we will absolutely do everything we can to address your concerns. You are our past, current and future partners, and we value every single one of your contributions to growing this sport in our community. We are in this together. (i.e.... we have your money and you are not getting it back... but we are all together.. but we have your cash)

Sincerely,

Amber Marino

That's too much like right for USTA to refund the money. It's funny they can tell us to stop playing in the middle of the season but then it's up to the local league to refund money.

USTA should not refund any money in case the USO has to be postponed and they don't get to make any money.

What's the word on refund now? I see a document in NorCal that they do not give refund, but only credit. Of course this document has no special clause for pandemic situation like what we're experiencing now.

My guess is refund is not likely, it'd be a credit at most, if any. Lucky me, I've stopped participating in contributing to USTA's pocket.

Does everyone think USTA summer season is done? Have not heard anything official from local league.

I am in New England and 18 over starts mid May but for my team first match isn't until early June usually. I am thinking it will be cancelled but holding out hope.

The USTA is based in NYC and White Plains NY. There might be a season... it beginning mid May .. no way. They are using the US Open site as a field hospital.

Haven't played USTA in a while...
IIRC, there was a yearly USTA membership fee of ~ $50 (free subscription to Tennis magazine!) . And then ~$20 to register for a local team. Plus a local league fee?
What refund are we talking about? The USTA yearly fee will not be refunded... And you will get a credit for $20 when registering next season or whenever it starts up.
So where is the problem?

Lol refund...Usta lol.

Best laugh I've had so far today. In fact when this thing calms down a bit USTA is going to increase rates. They are after all a nonprofit organization lolz and nonprofits need to to squeeze every bit of money out of you.

Also just take $10 off my yearly sub, I don't want the magazine, it's full of ads and I don't read it, why is this magazine a mandatory fee for usta membership (don't say it's free because nothing is free) ? Does tennis magazine owner or Chris Evert have so much pull that they automatically get to force a subscription on us.

Yes.

And it is the only stable tennis magazine. Inside Tennis is less popular. A sport as big as tennis needs its own magazine, given how sparsely tennis is covered by the mainstream sports magazines.

First time I've heard that. They just said "stop playing" Never heard anything about a credit. I'll ask the captain about that.

I once signed up for a local team for ~$20. Ended up not playing a match. The next season I registered online for a new team and there was no charge.
Obviously this is a mid-season stoppage. But a similar solution can be applied.
But who knows how the U$TA wastes membership fees. Wasn't the U$TA paying that useless dunderhead Pat McEnroe $9 million? :(

In our recently completed 55+ 9.0 season, I was the **captain** and didn't play a single match. . .

Guessing the cost to register on a local team is around $20.
If the U$TA is not willing to step up to help local league,
I would have no problem eating some/all of that $20 to support the local league and teams, IF they are hurting. Or give credit to future registration.
Who the hell could have foreseen this mess?
