Will Wimbledon 2022 repeat?

It's 274 th day of this terrible war in Ukraine and I don't see the end soon. In 2022 Atp decided to take away points from Wimbledon because of the political decision to forbid Russian and Belorussian players to play. Unfortunately, I think we gonna watch the same movie this year because all managers, directors, and politicians are too egoistic to admit a mistake. What is your opinion about this?

I don't think Wimbledon will repeat the ban again, given every other tournament this year just allowed them to play without a flag. It'll be an incredibly bad look to do it again.

Too soon to know. But Wimbledon is going to do what Wimbledon wants to do.

For me the strangest thing is that Wimbledon actually CAN decide this. The actual host of all Slam tournaments is the ITF, so the ITF should just insist on making/enforcing the rules.

If a local club doesn't want to act according to the rules, then the Slam should be taken away from that club. It should really be that simple.

Im asking because this decision almost decide number one this year which is terrible. Politics is unfortunately stronger than sport.

you realise the ITF is the Slams, right?

the Australian, American, French and British associations are like the permanent members of the UN Security Council - they can effectively kill any ITF decision they don’t like

maybe if all 3 other Slam owners ganged up on Wimbledon they could do something, but that would set a really bad precedent for control over their own Slams so why would they?

They won't repeat the ban, simply because the ATP and WTA withdrew ranking points.

It was a little bit of a power strugglr between the professional tours and the AELTC.

Wimbledon decision wasn't a mistake.
ATP decision was a mistake.

The "without the flag" thing is a joke as well, considering the crimes that the US have committed across the world. Biden is like Carter with the hypocrisy.

My guess is that Wimbledon will want ranking points back, so will agree to Russian players being back, but might try some stunt prior to the tournament, like seeking guarantees that they won't propagandize for Putin, as if the 2022 women's champion didn't do that to some extent. Anyone taking advice from the current shambles of a British government is a shambles themselves, so it would be utterly ridiculous of Wimbledon to try to hide behind the government again.

Well, actually BECAUSE ITF "is the Slams", THEY should make the rules, and not the club "hosting" it. Because ITF is the real host, and the club only the secondary host. And if some countries kill an ITF decision, then there shouldn't be any Slam hosted anymore in such a country, at least for the time that government decision is in power. There is no room for negotiating. Such a competition has to be international with no exceptions, or it's not worth being held there. And it obviously has to be the same for all 4 Slams. Nobody should have control over "their own" Slam in terms of rules.

that’s nice

doesn’t work that way though

AELTC controls the LTA, which together with USTA/TA/FFT controls the ITF - i.e. the ITF is run by the Slam owners, to benefit the Slam owners

may as well get used to it

Actually and Wimbledon make a huge mistake, mixing politics and sport. What tennis players have with war? There obligation is just to play tennis. And for the record I think that's not a Wimbledon mistake either, they just listen to the government.

The other slam owners are actually national tennis associations, I believe, whereas the AELTC is a private club owned by very wealthy people.

You can understand why such people might want to get on board with what was fashionable among their circle at the time, but the excitement has fizzled out.

Wimbledon won't be banning anyone this year and they'll hide this behind some stunt as mentioned in post #10.

Give it a rest, old mate.

This is not convincing because there is no suggestion that the AELTC was blind-sided by the ATP/WTA's decision to withdraw points.

They were determined to go ahead come what may. So there was no power struggle, merely a unilateral decision.

They won't repeat the ban, simply because the ATP and WTA withdrew ranking points.

It was a little bit of a power strugglr between the professional tours and the AELTC.

From memory the Wimbledon tournament is a joint venture between the AELTC and LTA - but the economics and structure of the LTA mean that it’s basically a puppet of the AELTC anyway

That’s basically how the UK works, looks like a modern democracy but once you scratch the surface the toffs still run everything

The part of the UK tour run by the LTA had no rankings points withdrawn, from memory, so the ATP/WTA made a nuanced decision.
