From today's NY Post, on the subject of whether Serena will get any fan support in her upcoming match against Clijsters, Serena's mother said no, and she's gotten used to not expecting any support at any time. In fact:
"We're used to it," Oracene Price told The Post yesterday from the players' lounge after watching her daughters advance to the women's doubles finals. "I always like to see the support, but we know we don't get it. So we don't expect it really. They won't recognize it until someone gets old or is dead, especially when they're black. It's true. Like Michael Jackson. They weren't playing him that much on the radio anymore until he died."
It's sad that such great tennis players have such boorish parents (granted, it isn't the first time we've seen tennis stars with boorish parents). Interesting, Serena and Venus have huge endorsements, fashion lines, etc.....hard to see how that could succeed if they have no support anywhere. Also, I could swear, while watching the 1999 US Open replay yesterday when Serena won, that there were tons of people cheering when she won....
