Williams' family....sigh #10,000

From today's NY Post, on the subject of whether Serena will get any fan support in her upcoming match against Clijsters, Serena's mother said no, and she's gotten used to not expecting any support at any time. In fact:

"We're used to it," Oracene Price told The Post yesterday from the players' lounge after watching her daughters advance to the women's doubles finals. "I always like to see the support, but we know we don't get it. So we don't expect it really. They won't recognize it until someone gets old or is dead, especially when they're black. It's true. Like Michael Jackson. They weren't playing him that much on the radio anymore until he died."

It's sad that such great tennis players have such boorish parents (granted, it isn't the first time we've seen tennis stars with boorish parents). Interesting, Serena and Venus have huge endorsements, fashion lines, etc.....hard to see how that could succeed if they have no support anywhere. Also, I could swear, while watching the 1999 US Open replay yesterday when Serena won, that there were tons of people cheering when she won....

Its no wonder oracine and richard got married, they are both very intelligent individuals.

If it were me i would of broke her jaw too so she would shut up and stop eating :) Cant really blame the guy can you?

I don't doubt that some people don't like the Wiliams simply because they are black, while others have legit reasons not to like them (which have been discussed ad nauseum on these boards), and still others don't like them for their race and their behavior (and disingenuously argue that it's just their behavior)

But, Oracene Price seems to make her point too broadly. She says that they "never" get any support, which just isn't true. Plenty of Williams sisters fans, including myself, and you can see it for yourself at the tournaments they play when people are cheering for them.

She is correct though. Anybody who has followed this thread knows how much the Williams are hated and it is not because of their racquets.

I don't know what you mean by boorish. But Serena wont get that much support, just like Venus did not, and race may very well have something to do with it. It really suprises me that so many on this message board fail to realize that race is still an issue in the U.S. even for folks like Venus and Serena Williams; even for the president of the United States and he is half white.

And ofcourse threads like this give certain posters cart Blanche to post racism wrapped in humor, as in the first post after yours.

There are many misguided idiots who hate the Williams because of their skin colour, and the Williams are absolutely correct to speak out against those people. There are also many people who don't like the Williams precisely because of the victimization complex they seem to have. The whole "we're black, so everyone hates us" thing just isn't true, as evidenced by the huge success the two sisters are, and as evidenced by the enormous crowds that come out to watch them play tennis (the overwhelming majority of whom are rooting for them, especially at the US Open).

I dunno if it has anything to do with the WS being black or american.. Many just dont like them.. Serena moreso. She doesnt have a likeable personality.

By boorish I mean they display behaviour that is boorish (look up the word).

Serena always is well supported at the Open, as is Venus...no idea what you're talking about there. Listen during breaks between points and you'll hear constant yells and screams of "Come on Serena!!!" and so on. And well they should be; they're fantastic tennis players, and Americans to boot. Plus, I don't recall hearing cascades of boos at any championship Serena has ever won...do you?

Race is definitely an issue in the US, unfortunately. But to claim that EVERYONE is prejudiced against your children.....just not true.

Serena and Venus are not always supported at the Open. There have been many threads on this board that can attest to that, a quick search and you will find many.

And if you can't recall boos at any championship Serena has won, then I don't know what sport you have been watching! Does Indian Wells ring a bell? An American tournament at that!

Oracine may have overstated but that does not invalidate her point.

There was never any proof racist comments were made at indian wells aside from what the family said. As you have seen, they dont have alot of credibility in these matters.

Ever heard the story about crying wolf? It gets old very fast with these two.

Your multimillionaires, stop acting like oppressed victims.

omg, to claim that serena doesn't get any support at the open is jsut plain stupid. i mean, really really really stupid. i can't imagine any sane person arriving at that conclusion. just listen to the crowd during her matches, look at all the prime time she gets, see how often they replay her matches during rain delays, notice how the sisters' doubles matches are practically the only womens' doubles matches being covered extensively on tv. how you can have a brain and still claim that serena doesn't get any support is beyond me.

i'm sorry, i know being a minority in america is tough (i'm one too), and there are many times when you can claim unfair treatment due to race, but this is definitely NOT one of them.

They don't act like victims (and I am not a big Serena fan, i like Venus). They, or someone associated with them, might answer a question and their answer rubs 'certain people' the wrong way; no matter how true it is.

The mere mention of racism in America riles up some people. Its easy to claim false victimization, when you have never been a victim of something yourself.

If anything, the Williams family gets favorable treatment and no one has the guts to ask them tough questions because they want to be politically correct. Oracene should've been told to STFU.

Sounds like good old Williams racism paranoia talk again. Instead of focusing on all of the good stuff that's come their daughters' way, such as what shinta posted above, they choose to focus on that one person who may have said racist things during a match 10 years ago, or on a small group of people who don't root for Serena/Venus vs a non-black player.

Yes, 'any' support is going too far. But there have been times when Venus and or Serena have had less support form an American crowd at the 'American' grand slam, than one would expect (against foreign opponents). Again there are many threads on this board that show this; with some people agreeing and some disagreeing.

And what the Television studios decide is not the same thing as crowd support.

There was a reason behind their booing. It was the Williams family who made it about race.

Nobody hates them cause theyre black. we hate them, cause they are obnoxious, and act like they are gods gift to earth. and dont get me started on the screams.

Arrogance often comes with greatness. So what! Ever read Federer's press conferences?

The only reason people don't let Venus and Serena get away with it is because they are black.

Black women of course have no right to be arrogant.

When has Federer ever said that he lost a match because his opponents made 'lucky shots', or that 'I would've definitely won if I was healthy'?

Actually, it's accusations like this which make the Williams clan unbearable. Even with millions and millions of dollars and the freedom to do as they please, they're still the poor victims.

I've heard Federer say things like "Well I've beaten him 12 times in a row. So when it got close I knew I was going to pull it out."

Very well said scootad...

Excellent point. I find Federer to be one of the most arrogant players ever (not that he hasn't earned it) he's just not in your face about it.

I wonder if some of these William sister haters also hated McEnroe or Roddick or Hewitt or early Seles or early Graf along with many other 'arrogant' champions.

And what the Television studios decide is not the same thing as crowd support.
True, I was thinking that as I wrote my post. But television studios are always chasing ratings, and they will air what gets them the best ratings. Based on that and the fact that they air the Williams sisters so much, it suggests that people who watch tennis in general support or at least like to watch the sisters.

Of course, general tennis fans and the US Open crowd are not the same thing, but the latter could be considered a microcosm of the former (albeit slightly weighted towards the more wealthy, considering the cost of tickets). Nonetheless, I would still argue that there is a positive correlation between TV coverage and crowd support.

Still, the most concrete and obvious example of support for the Williams sisters comes from just listening to the crowd during their matches. They almost always heavily favor the sisters, and when they don't, it's usually because the sisters are winning and the crowd wants to see more tennis. The case with Kim might be an exception, though, since Kim's comeback story is such a nice one, and she's such a likable person.

Regarding the arrogance issue, let's not confuse confidence with arrogance. Confidence translates to belief in yourself even when the odds are against you. Arrogance on the other hand exhibits as a dismissive attitude towards opponents, not giving them credit for a good match when they beat you, and a general obsessive self focus without regard for the skills or abilities of others.

I think all top tennis players are both arrogant and confident to an extent, though some are more arrogant than confident. I see a lot of people faulting the sisters for arrogance, and I can't say their accusations are without merit. I can also understand the annoyance at their victim mentality, especially considering all the success they've had. These are two major reasons why I don't particularly support the sisters. You don't see this in Tiger Woods, for example (at least it's not as obvious in the media coverage), which is perhaps why he has so much more support in his sport than the sisters in theirs.

There are plenty of reasons to dislike the William sisters, but to some people dont like them, because their black is obviously wrong. On the other hand a lot of people like and dismiss things about them, because of their colour.

The truth is as bad as you think the Williams are they are definitely not worse than the likes of Mcenroe and Connors. Nor do I think they are as bad as Capriati or a young Agassi. Yet I do not recally any matches where the USA crowd rooted for a foreigner over these players. If I am wrong please correct me.

Exactly, 10 char

The race card gets so old in society today that it's not even funny.
If a white person doesn't like a William's they are a racist, period.

The question I ask is this, why do the blacks assume this. I then follow up with the assumption then that they don't like the white player because they are white!

oracene and richard williams are just a bunch of naggers :)
maybe they have a right to be like that but it sure doesnt look justified

That is just an awful post, and you should be ashamed - but you won't be, so I will just call you an idiot.

Domestic violence is no laughing matter. Say whatever you want about someones statements, but don't ever go there with the violence.

Looks like some people are fishing for another blacky comment. These people love their high horse, it is hard to deny them of happiness.

Their comments probably come due to comments like this. I am not black, nor am I particularly a fan of the Williams family (other than no denying the two daughter's excellent tennis achievements), but when I see comments like yours, I have no doubt why they say what they do.

Well done in showing your true colors. Stop and think about it once in a while.

Another satisfied (this time a closet) customer. By the way, I'm a cracker by some people's standards.

And I have no idea what you are saying. Cracker = black? Then I assume it was sarcasm? And I am in no way satisfied by the responses to this thread.

All of the top WTA players do that and act like that. The difference is the Williams are black.

Only a racist would say that the difference is the color of their skin. To a non racist person, everyone is equal. Racism goes both ways. What would Mal Washington say about all the Williams' accusations? What did he go through? You never heard him cry to the media about anything.
