Start... Racqu
I was a classic tennis racquet kind of player. When i say classic I mean the 1990s versions of racquets Like the 98 versions of the radical yellow black radicals, the Classic 6.1 pro staff black and yellow the wilson Prostaff 6.0 and the likes there of.
When Federer took over and the classic racquets started to change for the first time with hyper carbon, Stretch racquets, liquid metal, titanium i will even say first gen graphene. I stayed with my 6.1 prostaff 95 stretch. Then I got injured. It took a long while. When got back into the game those racquets I grew up with were gone. Luckily Federer was still in between a 85 square inch and the 90 square inch prostaffs. the 85 were still around and on store shelves but he $220 dollar price tag was out of my range. However Prokennex was reborn that same year and had a signature series racquets. They were all ugly grey with a shimmer paint job that peeled and got gross. The prokennex signature series at the time were all clones or copies of the best classic racquets ever. Example there were 2 versions of the type C, the 98 and the 93. The 93 played like the Prestige classic, the L7 safin version and the 98 played like the 85/(hyper carbon 90 Prostaff). The materials were 80 percent graphite and 20 percent kevlar and the price was $150 and the specs were close enough. I went with the prokennex. 2 years later I am coaching full time and I need more racquets. I went to buy some more type C prokennex however they change the model to the typc c redondo and got rid of the kevlar and it changed the way the racquet felt and played. Now Im at a loss I need that classic feel and play style. I got sponsored by wilson and went to pro staff 90 k factors and stayed with the prostaff 90s until the last of its line. Now we jump from the prostaff 90s to this newer version 97. I figured that it would play like my old prostaff but it didn't.
Federer was winning and wilson comes out with the steam and juice, (which turned into the burn and Ultra). Then out of nowhere Juan Martín del Potro was ready to play again and Del-potro plays with a stretch hyper carbon 6.1 with the kfactor paint job. They somehow convince him in a new paint job and Thus the Burn FST series was born. Juan Martín del Potro that same year got injured again, as well as federer getting injured for the first time. Thus sales of these racquets went slump. the Burn FST and the Burn racquets got confusing. Since Kei Nishikori was winning and Juan wasn't the FST line was ended. However this is whats happening and I wasnt paying attention because I was still playing with prostaff 90s and had a large collection of them including some 85 saint vincents.
Lets move forward 3 years or so. Its now 2017 and the FST line is DEAD Fully. I didn't know it yet. Wilson Contracts got real small. You can only get 1 racquet CV just came out. At this time I switch to the Prostaff 85 square inch Ceramics from years 1985 and 1986. They were amazing Help me get a #1 ranking in GA and a #26 National Ranking in mens 30s Division. I have not played due to injury and wanted to get a #1 ranking in the mens 40s Division. I notice that my old old racquets were not helping with power and the other player my age are in better shape.
My Search for a new racquet took about 1 year. I bought a 97 cv prostaff thinking I can increase the weight by adding lead tape. This did not work. My shots were less powerful and my regular hitting partner mention a decrease in power in my shots using the cv97 over my 85si Ceramics from 1985/86. I will also mention that the new square shapes of the 97cv handles did not help either.
Since the BURN FST 95 release I owned one which I had around for a demo or a lender for my tennis lessons. When I first played with the racquet The racquet had lots of power and spin which I couldn't control. Stringing it around 46lbs at the time so it was just put away. around the 1 year mark i run across the specs for the fst 95 burn and compared it to the Prostaff classic. Almost Identical. I restrung my burn FST 95 and It felt perfect. I didn't have to go through a big adjustment period. I played some flex leagues and won. I have been using the Burn FST 95 for 3 years and recently customised it to get pro level swing weight.
STORY TIME ENDed
Comparing the Wilson Classic 6.1 to the burn fst 95 we get almost exact same specs except the head shape of the burn fst is a bit wider on top to allow more spin. Imagine a hybred Yonex babolat Pure drive Wilson prostaff classic 6.1 all had 1 child together and it came out as the BURN FST 95. Its almost a Pro stock Racquet except for the heavy weight and the 330 swing weight. But I added 6 grams of lead tape to the top of my racquet and now it has the same swingweight as nadal's racquet and balance. Nadal's Racquet swing weight is 360 and balance is 33cm my burn FST 95 Swing weight is 360 and balance 33cm. I paid for my burn fst 95 aftermarket used from **** $60 nadal's racquet is about $400 prostock for the normal people.
I feel that Many players like myself who love the classic racquets and feel may have missed out on this one. Only because there was not contingency plan if federer got injured and there was no marketing plan for the FST they just put BURN on it.
I current Own 6 FST 95, Sold all 12 my Prostaff 90s, I kept my ceramics 85 prostaffs.
