Wilson Buttcap on Yonex DR 98: Works just fine.

I've been playing with the Yonex DR 98 recently, and it's pretty nice. The only thing I didn't like is the narrow butt cap. It made my pinky finger feel tired from gripping the racquet a little tighter, which is strange and pathetic.

I've been playing with Wilson Six.One 95's, and I'd replaced the butt caps on those with "Wilson Sony Smart Sensor Butt Caps (non-ProStaff)" from Tennis Warehouse:

Those are great, and it occurred to me that both those and my new Yonex butt caps are Sony Tennis Sensor compatible.

I wonder...

Oh yeah.

So I ordered a set of Wilson buttcaps from Tennis Warehouse, along with some other supplies I might need to force them to fit on a slighly differently-shaped handle.

No need. It slides on exactly like a Wilson handle. So perfect. Time to swap logos.

The Yonex logo attaches at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock, so it fits just fine. The Wilson logo does not fit in the Yonex butt cap, however. So don't blame me if your Christmas-themed butt cap plans fall apart.

I tacked the butt cap on with some staples, wrapped a new T-W leather grip, and it feels so much better. With the Wilson butt cap, the bevel has a steeper angle, the overall diameter is wider, and it meshes more smoothly with the grip at the narrow end. You can kind of see the lip of the Yonex butt cap pushing the grip into an odd shape on the left side, where the right is smooth.

So, if you've ever wondered, this is totally a thing you can do.

I originally built up the yonex butt cap with a shrink sleeve but I didn't love it so I decided to follow your route and give it a go! The yonex buttcap did not want to come off, I had to cut it up to get the screwdriver underneath the actual cap and that was much easier. But, I had to toss the original cap unfortunately. I ended up gluing the new cap on with Shoe Goo since I don't have a staple gun. Either way happy with how it turned out, thanks for sharing!

That the new ezone? These are the blade style caps, right?

Nope my ol DR! They were the Smart Sensor Wilson caps, discontinued but I found a store in Australia that still had a few in stock. I remember someone on here using the new non-PS caps and said they worked too.

Have you installed Prince butt caps on Yonex frames?
Yes. I don’t use staples. I prefer to use transparent stretchy 2” wide thin packing tape wrapped tight a few layers. Prince caps have little tiny traction spikes on sides that allow the tape to grab for secure attachment. The Wilson caps don’t have traction spikes, but the larger bevel at bottom of cap allows the tape to grip securely. I also add a layer or two of the packing tape (only 1” wide) over the pallet to make a more snug fit between pallet and cap if needed, which further adds to the secure attachment.

Does anyone know if I could use this exact method on either a Yonex VCORE Pro 97 330 or a VCORE Pro 97HD ?

Thanks in advance!

Superb! So do I order the same grip size or one size smaller/larger for my VCore 98? I’m afraid that they would not fit snug.

Funny that you ask, since I was wondering the same thing. So I ordered 2: 1 with the same size and 1 with one size up.

They both fit fine, but as a matter of personal preference I ended up using the one size up and I'm happy with it.

I’ve adjusted to Yonex buttcap shaving terrible flairs and now when I go to something like Wilson or Head it feels weird lol.

Wasn’t the same size more snug? I guess I will order two sizes too then.

yes, the same size was more snug, but the difference with the bigger one was not noticeable.
I originally thought I had to put some thin double-sized tape to make it fit better, but ended up failing since the tape was crunching up as I was putting the cap on. I ended up stapling the buttcap and there is no 'give' at all... also, when putting the leather grip on I made sure I applied with a lot of tension.... bottom line in my case it worked great...

After switching to Yonex from Wilson I started developing wrist pain since I noticed that I was gripping the racquet A LOT harder... I then realized that I tend to use my last 2 fingers more than anything else when playing and the Yonex cap wasn't helping me feel secure...

Cool! Anyways, when I checked TW they currently have the L2 which is my racket grip size, but not L3.

Since you mentioned stapling, what stapler do you use?

I'm glad I came across this thread a couple of weeks ago. I had been using the aforementioned Power Cap, but (a) you need to cut it w/ scissors or a knife, and (b) you also need to wrap it w/ tape, otherwise it keeps slipping off the butt cap.

Using the Wilson butt cap worked great, although I'd suggest (as others have) going 1 grip size larger for a more pronounced effect:

My Yonex grip is a 3/8, and I went w/ 1/2. I no longer need to wrap my overgrip twice around the butt cap. I did need to add a wee bit more lead to compensate for the loss from the Power Cap (one of the benefits of using it as I like a heavier frame), but it feels great, and looks much better.

Anyone try the red non-prostaff new (or Triad) wilson buttcap on their Yonex? Does it fit the palette?

Anyone know if the pro staff version of the butt cap works, too? Or try going two grip sizes up? 3/8 and 1/2 seem to be sold out everywhere :(

Has anyone tried putting a Wilson trap door to the Yonex butt cap? I’ve got a vcore pro 97 and lost my trap door recently. Couldn’t find the replacement butt cap anywhere online. I’m being lazy and don’t want to take the butt cap off and buy a stabler to stable a new Wilson butt cap on my vcore. Wondering if I can just put another trap door on my current butt cap. Please let me know if you find any of the trap door matches the Yonex butt cap. Really appreciate it!

Question: Has anyone replaced an L3 wilson buttcap on an L2 Yonex handle? Or is everyone using an L3 wilson buttcap with L3 Yonex handle. I have 2 Yonex racquet both L3 and L2 so wanted to see which was a better fit or get any thoughts on it.

Thanks

I’ve done the equivalent: Wilson L4 on a Yonex L3. Fits fine. Gives you a nice big butt…cap…

why all that fuss. i dont even like those thick buts. with a thinner butt you can more easily hold the butt in the palm of your hand like Rafa does moreover putting an overgrip on your racquet with a not so big buttcap.

They finally came in — snapped on great on the Vcore 95. And the trap door from the yonex fit in pretty well, although i secured it with some double sided tape just in case. Excited to see how it plays now!

Looks awesome! Did you have to modify/trim the yonex trap door to fit in the blade cap?

Been with the Ezone 98 for about 2 months now. Had to give the Wilson butt cap a try. Found some on TW 5/8 size on my 4 1/2. Wrapped some electric tape a couple times to snug the cap more. Stapled gun it and worked great. Happy the trap door fits even with the size difference.
