Wilson Custom Racquets. Are they worth it???

If you have a girlfriend or wife that gets super emotional about having her racket in her favorite color with her name on it, it just might be worth the extra money. They don't play any different. Or, if you've tried one of their rackets and love the way it plays, but absolutely hate the color, then go for it.

I think you can choose an option other than the garbage velvet paint. Personally, I'd say no to extra price cuz wilson's qc is trash no matter what, but if colors are important to you go ahead

I’ve two custom Wilson Clash Pro’s. First came in at 310g and a balance of 31.2 and the second was a little under spec at 307g, at the time I added lead to increase the weight to 310g and have the same balance.
If you buy in the Black Friday sale it’s around the same price as a regular Clash, a no brainer but that’s a long time to wait.
I love my custom clash’s - I “respect” these racquets more than any previous racquets I’ve had, not that I’ve ever broken a racquet.

It just a customized paint job, not specification on the racquet. I think it $50 more, make you unique! Go for it!

Or, you simply like the Pro Staff, Blade, Clash 100 racquet itself but don’t like the weird fuzzy feel paint, then you could be seen as someone who would pay for what they actually want.
Way to put a cynical outlook on things though, and who really looks at someone else’s racquet? You?
I bought 2 Pro Staff’s for my wife for her birthday, they are the color’s she wanted, with the finish she wanted, and yes, her name is on them.
I don’t think she’s a “Stooge” and will not “forever view her as shallow and superficial”.

If you don’t like the colors and it’s a frame you plan to stick with, why not. If I was as into one frame (blade) as some I would get custom blades with gloss paint instead of the velvet. I just don’t care for the velvet paint jobs at all.

I think if there is a color/design you like - go for it. I like the Blade design / color - If I were doing it I would just make the frame gloss black - looks great

I know in golf there are a lot of comments of how the clubs look at address (watch a golf club video review) - the thinking is if you look down at address and like the look it matters psychologically ... Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't , but I think it is fine to do if there is something you like

I should add I play with a Pure Strike - I think it is a great looking racquet. Did that have an impact on my decision - not sure, but I do like that I like the look

Wilson does seem to do a really good job on the paint, etc. And, there's nothing wrong with playing with a custom, unique frame. My point was just don't expect it to play differently than the stock model.

They are definitely worth it if you need a yellow one ;-) (thinking of a Clash because I have none):

If you're waiting for anything you do in tennis to be "worth it," you're probably playing a losing hand in the waiting game. Spend on it as a hobby because you can afford to, and it makes you happy.

Or don't.

If you like a Wilson racquet but want a different color, why not? I'm about to splurge on a pair I think. Just struggling with the paint job (sometimes having options leads to indecision lol)

I think the paintwork they do in the custom program is high quality. I was quite surprised with the outcome of my wife's Clash. There is nothing wrong with wanting unique colors on your frame, and I say go for it. The paint quality is good.

She is no doubles playing hen either. Singles then, and singles now. D1 at UC Davis, then D2 at SFSU. Loves the Clash for her elbow.

My son got a yellow RF97 for his birthday a couple of years ago in matte and the paint is so great I got two clash pros in matte - worth the 50 over the velvet which peels and feels terrible. The new limited ones are in matte too I think. The custom matte finish is very durable and my two rackets were right at spec. Just my experience.

Is the velvet paint removable? Like if I give it a good scrub like the old rubber paints would it come off?

I think it's worth it because I honestly hate the Wilson stock paint jobs. If I was going to buy a nice racquet to use for the next few years, I would want to enjoy looking at it.

Playing with Clash 100 and thinking about switching to 98. What type of paint is more durable? velvet, glass, matte?
I've been holding on to see if they release v2 in late 2021/early 2022 so I have a tough choice to make

The irony of this response given ollinger’s profession is hilarious. Especially given fact that 25% off code going on now makes them cheaper than TW price by a fair margin. Do you wait for a sale, buy a car or shirt because of its color etc etc etc. Come on doc!

My wife likes my blade 98 but wants a red/black one.

I could pay heaps for a custom wilson blade....... or in could buy a beat up one on fleabay, and customises it myself with a couple of cans of spraypaint and a black texta to write her name on it. Women love that sought of personal touch, dont they? Its the thought that counts.

No brainer at the sale price if they have your weapon! I would love my name on my stick, may even help with committing as your custom name in the throat will stop you from being able to flip it :)

About to pull the trigger on 2 Clash 100's
Is it worth the extra $$$?? Anyone order from Wilson?
No, I have not ordered from Wilson and no their universally dismissal reputation for QC precedes the inflated price for a cosmetically enhanced frame. But you go ahead, tell me if I'm wrong. "From 1989, it (Wilson) has been a subsidiary of the Finnish group Amer Sports, since 2019 itself a subsidiary of the Chinese group ANTA Sports."

i thought most people knew this. Are you implying because it's a Chinese company that you are refusing to buy?

No, I am supposing b/c of the Chinese connection, and known low QC of Wilson racquets, many times mentioned in TW posts, that is coupled w/Chinese racquet manufacturing, the low QC would carry over to any direct order Wilson racquet regardless of price. I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong if anyone can prove otherwise.

Which racquets do you use/purchase?

Yonex, they hit it out of the park w/the new EZONE and VCORE. I'm not saying Wilson is a "bad" racquet, everyone likes what they like, if anyone wants to pay extra for a Wilson frame and enjoys it, if they are happy, I'm happy for them.

You actually wouldn't be paying extra. This past weekend, you'd be paying 25% less than if you bought it at the store. You'd get the finish that you want and I guess whatever color you wanted.

yes, we ae all aware of the QC of Wilson racquets. From what I hear the QC control on Yonex racquets are much better. iwould like to give it a try at some point, but it is a huge financial commitment. I would recommend not going to almost an retail store in the United States as well.

This is a very entertaining thread, as I have ordered several custom racquets from Wilson. The custom purchases are strictly due to the fact that I cannot stomach the graphics used by Wilson for the last several years, not to mention the velvet paint. Yes, how my racquets look matters to me, and it is worth a few extra bucks to me to get what I like.

I got a good chuckle at the multi-color Clashes, since my tastes run the exact opposite--my Blades are ordered in all gloss black finish. To each their own. :)

If you have the money and like the racket, why not?

I wouldn't put my name on it though.. for resell value (if you would want to).. Maybe a funny word or something, but otherwise nothing :)
