The SHIFT Racquets are almost here (launching July 14th to be exact!)! Wilson has developed their newest family of tennis racquets with extensive feedback from top coaches and elite players from around the world, including some of you! In this episode, Michael Schaeffer, the Global Product Director for Racquet Sports at WILSON joins us to talk about the process of creating a new franchise of racquets!

The question regarding strings got me thinking. Given the racquet’s design, I wonder if you could disable/attenuate the lateral bending of the racquet by choosing the wrong string, i.e. a string that bends and displaces easily upon impact. Or would our traditional understanding of snapback add to the lateral bending induced spin? Would one want to favor stiffer strings to transfer ball contact force to the lateral mode and if so, does that correlate to his answers? His answers of Eco Power, ALU Power, and NXT seemed a bit…predictable? Or do you want strings that move and snapback to generate that much more spin?

Total speculation - To me it would seem like the racket only get involved after the string is "done" / the initial deformation of the string is close to complete. So the string designed to disable/attenuate will also do the same effect on other rackets (lateral bending). So the Shift will still bend laterally more than other racquets with the same specially designed string you speak of. All rackets laterally bend - the shift probably does it a little more. Thats all.
