Wilson Pro Labs: Ultra Pro (16x19) Official Thread

I contacted Wilson about grommets for the Ultra Pro 16x19 and the possibility of a v4 release any time soon and here is the response I received this morning...

I am sorry for the lack of stock in the grommets at present. We are expecting a restock in around 2 - 3 weeks time.

There is no information yet on a V4 for the Ultra models. The V3 is due to be restocked soon as well.

2-3 wks was 6 months ago. Later for Wilson’s incompetence…

Hi, new member here.
I have 2 WUP18 and 2 WUP16 and I love them both. I have Alu Power 115 in the 18 mains at 20x18 kp. I have rarely hit so much penetrating, effortless, through the court spin balls with any racket before. Given that it is my first thin string I've ever tried. I usually play 16 gauges. But this was an eye-opening moment to me! My hitting partners really commented on it and I beat them pretty easily while it is usually very close between winning and losing. And that were my first 3 outings with the 18 mains ever!

The 16 mains is a fun racket to play with but I've bought them used with Confidential at 25kp which does not feel good at all... I never liked any Solinco string and Confidential might be the one I like the least.
But I'll have them restrung at 20 x 18 kp with Poly Tour Rev in purple.... Great colour clash!

Use the same string you have in your UP18’s in your UP16’s just thicker gauge. Would do ALU 1.20 @ 20-21kg (m)/18-19kg (x) if I were you. The feel will be much more consistent across frames and you should be able to enjoy the bit of xtra spin & launch from UP16 w/o an issue.

Yeah, I thought so too, but I only have a reel of Alu Power 115 here, no 120. I will see what I can do about it. But yeah, that would definitely be the best option.
But I am actually thinking about making the 18 mains my match rackets with the 115 Alu.
I actually do like the feel of the Poly Tour Rev as well, but I only have a reel of 125. So I won't be using it in the 18 mains.

I see. I’d just try a pack of it for the UP16; may help you find a consistent response between your UP’s; UP18’s w/ ALU 1.15 for your usual competitive play (btw you should totally make em your match rackets if you feel you can trust em when the pressure’s on) & UP16’s for slower days/mixing things up w/ more spin. They’ve got ALU 1.20, classic ALU 1.25, ALU Spin 1.27, ALU Soft 1.25 (super nice string), etc etc. If you hate it you’ve got that reel of PTR & didn’t blow $200 on a full reel of thicker ALU. Sometimes different gauges of the same string are very different in response, lifespan, etc. Worth a try IMO

Yeah, I'll give it a try! I guess I can ask my pro shop if they can trade a set of 120 with a cut set from my 115. He is very nice and I think he'll do it!
What a cool pro shop! Wish I had one closer to me. Closest one’s an hour drive but they’re nice as well. Back in high school they gave me a $40 discount on a new Prince Textreme Warrior 100 bc I played a tournament at their tennis club that day. Great atmosphere & great shop.

Forgot to mention: UP16’s play best w/ 1.20 strings IME. The 16x19 is tight & 1.20 strings last a decent amt of time in it, & feel is better than thicker stuff. 1.25s play well in it too but I think the stringbed’s too dense for 1.30.

Ah, I want to add, that I really love that these rackets have a glossy paint job. It just feels great on the OHBH.

BTW, my Wilson Pro Shop said, he held the V4 in his hands but was not allowed to take photos. It will be like the Clash/Blade ones. So, an Angell Octane/Dunlop CX200 rip off. I am curious how this one looks with a glossy finish.
But I really, really like both of the former paint jobs, maybe the V3 a bit more.

Did he mentioned a release date? Thanks

Out of 8 Ultra Pros that we own - 3 of them have gotten these hairline fractures in the throat area. Have anyone else experience this?
I string them myself on a Neos (always 2 piece), and always start the crosses on the top. Doesn’t effect play or anything, but def not desirable.

OK, I asked him. The normal Ultra series should get an update in September, but we’ll see if that happens due to COVID. And the Pro/Tour should be updated the last, so probably by the end of 2022, early 2023. These dates are for Germany. He has no idea about release dates in North America.

Nooo, that should not be happening! Damn!

Ours cracked near 10 o clock. I haven’t seen it crack near the throat.

THose are real turn offs!
I want to make sure everyone knows the most stress a racquet has is during stringing. I am restringing every 3 days as my son breaks the string so a racquet tends to last about 15 months at most. He’s using 1.25mm RPM Blast to keep the picture in mind.

you're son is giving you a full time job in stringing! How many racquets does he rotate?

He rotates between 5 racquets and tends to keep 2 to 3 strung at all times. We have encountered strings breaking as early as 4 hours depending on who he hits with.

I thought about it a bit and I think I'll go for the "embracing the difference" approach. So I'll take the same string, ALU 115, and put it in both frames. The 16 mains should be having immense spin, I hope...

Will ULTRA PRO be available soon in a new cosmetic?

Will it be released again as PRO LABS and will not be available for purchase on TW or TWEU?

Taking out my WUP16 for a spin today with Grapplesnake Tour Sniper at 20x18 kps. Really looking forward to this. Tour Sniper is my favourite string when it comes to reliability.

There is no change in mold or technology just by changing cosmetics, right?

this used to happen to my prince graphites and to be honest, i just played through it and kept going without noticing much

Anyone got functioning coupon codes again? I see they've added the option to get it strung again, which I might take up so that it has a good initial stringing.

anyone else notice the Ultra Pros don’t have an upcharge if you choose Luxilon Vibe 125? I’d like to try it… just looking for a coupon code like others.

is anyone planning on trying the monfils artengo racquet when it becomes available? from what i've seen it doesn't seem like pro labs racquets seem to be restocking soon, so this availability may come to an end, and the artengo racquet has similar qualities in both a 16 x 19 and 18 x 20

At €110 or about $130 I'll probably get a pair of the 18x20 version.

Rexis Feel playtest string...
In this already flexy frame I imagine it will hit like butter with this string.
Durability I expect to be <10 hours

At least with artengo Monfil frame..if you buy A few and if the specs are crazy far apart like some Wilsons directs I have seen and you can return without much hassle..
2 artengo frames to 1 Wilson frame in terms of cost..
I am not earning a living playing tennis so in this case if the artengo frame is close as good as the Ultra Pro.. It won't effect me other than saving me some $$.

Ive finally made the decision to move on from mine. Not due to any fault of the frame but because I just dont play with much anymore. I had stocked up with 3 extra grommets for it too. I just need to stop being lazy and get the L4 frame and grommets listed already.

This is something of a useless comment, butI just love the pain job on these rackets. I know if and when version 4 comes out, they’ll have that dusty old “prior version” look to them, but I really don’t care. I love the look too much. Gunna grab me a Benoit Paire of these rackets and see how I get on.

Same, I didn't think much of it at first and was like "O normal wilson blah blah" but every time I take the racquet out it has allure. Maybe it's the gloss.

I am excited for the V4 if they can replicate the blade look but in blue, as I prefer the color blue.
@ThisHockeyTalk Your comment is about the racquet, so not useless at all.

so does this mean you might be on the resale market soon?

i thought this way for ages, but honestly, i invested so much money into things like court time, travel to tournaments, etc., that i realized sometimes it's worth the investment if it means i'm getting more out of my courttime / minute during training by not having to think about my racquet.
i was also broke for a long time too so there's that.

Yeah, the gloss is definetely great! I believe it is part of what makes this racket special.
