I played a tournament this past weekend. During the Open doubles (a money tournament) we were ahead in the first set, but lost it. We went down an early break, and on the changeover I switched from the UP 16 19 to the UT 18 20 and finally started making so many more volleys. We broke back immediately, though lost the match. I volley like absolute dog crap with the UP 16 19 compared to the UT 18 20.

18x20 just has a more precise string bed for volleys and short game for me as well.

Funny UP 16x19 story.
Alafia Ayeni was playing a local challenger but all his rackets were lost in luggage. So his coach asks me if I still had any of my kid’s UP 16x19s laying around (my son had switched PAVS a while back). This is him playing with my son’s beat to crap UPs. Zero mods/lead. ALU soft 48lbs. Ended up qualifying for main draw.

This makes me wonder why do I bother myself with all that hassle of customizing. Are all the clueless people (about racquet science) still right who say that the racket doesn't matter too much?
But then,... why do so many pro players still customize often with a bunch of lead and/or silicone or just prefer an extended length racket or a particular grip shape?

Some customize for a reason or two. Like my son customize strictly for a particular SW allowing him to drive on certain balls that he sees. Rafa throw quite a bit of lead at 12 just for Novak.

there's definitely a degree to which the time people use on gear could be spent on getting in shape or doing other things and they don't over think about it. ilia marchenko has a youtube video where he interviews pros and half of them don't even know what gauge they use or some of them only know the brand of string, not even which string, or what string pattern they're using
I watched some college players from a D2 school practice last year while my son was in an academy class. 3 of 4 were using the UT, all of them un-modded (visually anyway) and all using Hyper G. I am pretty sure that they all used the UT b/c someone liked it and people play what is recommended...and hyper g was the flavor at the time.
All were crushing the ball.

Haha yes - I was surprised as well. I even made a point of saying - I took all the lead off, idk if he needs to add some. And the coach was like - nah he doesn’t do any of that.
Also, in his 1st round qualifying match he only had one racket freshly strung and the other one I had strung for my kid back in March or April (also ALU soft). So he broke the fresh string early in 2nd set (after dropping the 1st) and finished the match with the 4mo old dead poly.
yeah, older UT with 18x20. This was during the winter months (they were using indoor courts) so it could have been end of 2020 vs beginning 2021. Their coach had a UP PJ but all the student players still had a UT. I go to his academy sessions so often that the timeline runs together.

It occurs to me that “Pro Labs” might be the biggest misnomer in tennis. “Prolapse” is more like what a certain body part might experiences when you get three rackets with a variance of 15 grams and 10 swing weight points.

What an awful situation. I would think they would have it figured out by now. I might be moving on the the new Pure Aero. Free power, free spin, in a lightweight package (at least compared the the 340g I have my Ultra's setup). I hit with it this morning on clay and it was a blast and so easy to use.
It is crazy, I can’t believe that after a few weeks of others getting the wrong grommets they haven’t fixed it. I’m betting that there are plenty who have ordered them to have on hand and won’t realize they aren’t the correct grommets until it’s too late.

At this point I'm looking for something easier to play with... I've really liked the Ezone 98 and the new Pure Aero. But the Pure Aero is such a different racquet I've been hesitant to pull the trigger. But I played to well with the demo I had! I really would like to try the Prince Tour 98 but the demos are always booked rely far out.

You know what. Since were talking about Wilson’s quality control, I have another story I want to get off my chest. 2 years ago, I ordered a set of Wilson V6 irons… 4-pw. They were supposed to be built at 1/4” longer than Wilson standard, which means the 7 iron would be 37.5”. I’m a total club ho, and most sets of irons I have is built to a 37.5” 7 iron spec, with the standard .5” length difference between each club. 3 of my sets are built to a 37.25” 7 iron. There are slight variations in how companies measure golf clubs, so the lengths aren’t 100% the same, but they are really close, probably .2” difference from my longest 7i to my shortest 7i across 9 different sets of irons. Anyways… I get the clubs in and the Wilson clubs are substantially shorter than all my other clubs. My 37.5” Wilson 7iron was shorter than my 37.25” Miura 7 iron. I email Wilson. It was quite clear to me that instead of building the clubs to a spec of +1/4”, they mistakenly built the to -1/4”.
- After 4 months they finally get back to me and say that the clubs are fine, and that it must just be the way Wilson measures their clubs.
- promptly, I insist they are incorrect. And they send the clubs back to Wilson club builders to check the specs.
- again, in fairness, they promptly reply that after double checking, the clubs are properly built to Wilson spec.
- I receive the clubs back and go to Chris Cote golf. I pick up brand new Wilson irons with a 7 iron built to 37.25”. My 7 iron, which again, was ordered to spec of 37.5” 7iron, was a quarter inch shorter than the brand new, 37.25” 7 iron that was being sold at Chris Cote’s Golf Shop.
- I take pictures of EVERY CLUB 4-p to show that mine are shorter than standard, not longer… I dutifully email my Wilson case manager these pictures ANDDDD… haven’t heard a thing in 10 months. Thanks wilson.
- After 4 months they finally get back to me and say that the clubs are fine, and that it must just be the way Wilson measures their clubs.

It's ashame they don't offer many good control/players sticks in the normal retail version though anymore. The ultra tour 97 was for a smaller share of the market but putting the piece up from about £140 to £240 made it a rip off really. All this glossy and non glossy frame version is also a con. Other manufacturers are giving a better retail version at a better price. Its good business for Wilson I guess though if people are happy to pay the inflated price but I personally won't buy these products at this price. I had the ultra tour 97 v2 but moved it on as the paints were not upto standard and scratched and fell off too easily, that was also glossy too. The blade v7 is a rubber paint which also does not age well. I have always had issues as time passes by with rubber paints. No issue if you change every two years but I like to find good rackets and keep them for a longer period.
