Wilson Pro Labs: Ultra Pro (16x19) Official Thread

Deciding between a NG/poly hybrid or full poly - any H19 (16x19) users with feedback on these setups? Thanks in advance

I did a hybrid with Revolve / NXT but honestly I am thinking about a full poly which I haven’t done in some time. The comfort factor is great and I think a full poly would be fine,

Received my Ultra Pro 16x19 today. With the plastic it is 308g and feels every bit 9 to 10 pts headlight. Don’t have a RA or swing weight machine but do have access to one. Hope to get it measured soon. Paint job looks great. By the way, is it just me or is Wilson’s 4 3/8 grip getting larger? The 3/8 grip feels more like a 1/2 to me or like a Babolat 3/8 grip which I have always thought that Babolat grips are huge.

I used to play with a k6.1 95, and a PS97 in 2015, both 4 3/8. My UT and Blade v7 are both 4 1/4, so I agree that wilson grips or oem grips are thicker

Ultra Pro actual specs seems to be much closer to specified specs than the Blade Pro. That’s awesome news!

If only Wilson could offer a 27.5in version!!! I’d rather bump the swing weight with length than weight.

i got mine on Saturday evening and I am in Georgia. Posted a short review earlier from yesterday’s brief hit.
Oh wow. My mistake then, didn't realize they started shipping em out early. I did read through that post too (y)

I've been thinking this could be a great stick for me too but we will see. I know it's maybe hard to judge, but how much of a difference would you say the launch angle is comparing to the 18x20? I understand you probably need to tinker with specs too, but this is the main thing I'm trying to gauge. Obviously I'm not the best hitter in the world, but with 16x19s I definitely have tendency to launch the ball more, especially on the forehand.... Happens once in a while with my 97HD too, but not as frequently, and the lower angle helps keep some of the sprayed shots in the court.

I'm mostly hoping for something that will help me with a little bit more margin, power, and spin. But at same time, I really do love the 97HD. I could go full racquetholic, but I don't feel like I'm going to find something that checks all of the same boxes + a few more. Although the recent Pure Drive playtest I've been on has kinda shown me what I don't want in a stick...lol

Just heard from Wilson regarding the Ultra getting to Europe:

"The shipments were delayed. We are hoping to have them by the end of October/early November but there is no set date right now."
Got an update from Wilson : right now Ultra pro 16x19 is only available for Australia and USA, it would be available in Europe (to be confirmed) as early as they can but it won’t be until early 2021 :cry:

You've got to be kidding me. This makes no sense.

I know, that’s the answer I got from Wilson France, after they asked the product specialist about it.
I think right now companies are reluctant to gamble on a lot of businesses, and there’s also a logistic problem with all this Covid thing, so UT 16x19 is trapped under this awful mix.
Wilson prioritize their main market (USA) and their closest to production site secondary market (Australia).
But the conclusion is that we Europeans are f*****.

I realize the world is wonky right now but how difficult can it be to ship, say, 500 of these frames to Europe?

If this is true this is just such a bummer.

Well you can ask through your local Wilson website if you have a different answer, at this point nothing can surprise me

I remember reading that Wilson was switching to a more rounded grip. I noticed the difference the first time I picked up a clash. I definitely feels thicker.

Just received an email from Wilson France. They say they have no idea when the UP 16x19 will be available in Europe… what a shame...

I thought the launch angle was very controllable. It is higher than the 18x20 but not significantly. You can control that with string but the 16m racquet is very controllable. Great racquet IMO.

My H19 just got here. I think I got really lucky with this one. It's 306.5 grams with the plastic on so I'm guessing 304 without it.

Should be able to play with it tomorrow night or Friday. Will report back with the results.

This seems to be an average spec for the UP 16x19. The tolerances on these are much tighter than on the BPs. At least so far.

OK. Was able to spend over 90 minutes with the 16m frame earlier today. I continue to be really impressed with the racquet. Here are some more thoughts.

Overall: Very plush, control oriented frame that gives you what you put in it. I have the 18m Ultra Tour and I do feel the 16m has a bit more comfort (from my experience). I personally think the 16m does everything the 18m does but a bit better. I know this is subjective. The sweet spot on the 16m is small but it is not as small as the 18m and for me the opening of the frame with the pattern gave me a bit more forgiveness and more spin.

Ground strokes - pinpoint control, good spin. I had no problem with control with this frame. I felt like I could be aggressive and not worry about a random hit the fence shot. It has more spin than the 18m but not too much. I love my one handed backhand with this frame. The head light weight distribution really allows me to snap through the ball. For me, my best shot with the frame was the backhand slice. It was like I was cutting through butter. Very smooth and the ball stays nice and low. If I struggled with this frame it is on the defense. I haven’t been able to dial in my defensive shots with good depth particularly the lob. I need to add more weight to the head as I am used to my customized Blade. More weight and more time should help.

Volleys: with good preparation and technique the volleys are real good...again I need to add weight as I found myself being early on some volleys which sounds a bit strange but that was what was happening. It volleys well but it doesn’t volley as well as my Blade. To me, the Blade is one of the best volleying racquets. Weight in the head will help here. My drop volleys / touch with this frame was excellent. This racquet is loaded with feel.

I did not serve nor return with the frame yet but plan to put more time (and weight) with the frame the rest of this week. I will most likely be purchasing a second.

One thing that I think everyone knows. This frame has a small sweet spot..it is bigger than the 18m version but still on the small side (smaller than a Blade for example). This racquet will reward you with good footwork and technique. At times I got lazy and my footwork wasn’t as good so I would not hit it as pure and the ball would set up for my opponent.

Great frame. Needs customization and expect to tinker with it to get it right but like I said earlier - if you are a fan of the 18m and want something with a little more forgiveness / power look no further. Great frame.

Sounds great. Great review. If it's even better than the UT 18M, then I can't wait to get mine back from the stringer, put my mods on and hit the courts. I'm going to compare it back-to-back with my UT 18M (same strings and similar tension to accommodate the different string patterns).

I think the 16m is better. Overall, I like 16x19 patterns better but I do like the 18m version and it won me some tough matches.

Well, just got home and saw these racquets in person. They are beautiful. Here are the specs with plastic wrap still on the grip (size 2)

Racquet 1
308gm
9.5 HL

Racquet 2
307gm
10 HL

I think they're close enough to match ...

Thank you very much for the review. The above is what I needed to know, and the bolded part just sold me on it I think. Sounds to me like this is a UT with a 16x19, albeit so far with astonishingly tighter QC:D

Just got an hour hit with the 16x19 342g 317mm and here are my initial thoughts comparing to the 18x20. Strung with Head Lynx Tour at 50lbs.

It definitely feels just like the 18x20 but just a slightly bigger sweet spot. It has good directional control but I did find myself struggling with consistency down the middle of the court. Pinpoint accuracy is not as good but it’s by no means bad. The launch angle was perfect for me, not high at all. I was getting slightly better depth with 16x19. It is more powerful but not by much. I find you still need to supply your own power, there is no free power from these racquets. Ohbh was getting a nice low arch over the net with great spin. Slice was also low and good side spin. Volleys are good but the touch and feel is slightly better with the 18x20.

Stringer just dropped off the 16/19 UP. Prior to adding my overgrip and dampener or any lead the specs are:

321 grams
32.75 balance so 5 points HL

I'll try and get a pic of my hairpin but mine is the octagon shape with 1 chamber filled with foam and the other has silicon.

Ran these up to the USTA Campus to get more exact measurements. Here's what they measured (unstrung with plastic on grips)
Racquet 1
308gm / 31.2cm balance / 286 SW

Racquet 2
306.8gm / 31.0 balance /287 SW

I lucked out. These are virtually identical.

Shouldn't it be more HL?

His is strung up which will drop the balance a bit. Dunno by how much, but seems reasonable.

Mine's going for stringing today. Full natty gut as I'm trying to work through some arm issues. Would probably go gut/poly in normal cases, but we will see how this goes first. (Also need to get my serve technique looked at :-D )

In the process of customizing I will remove some of the foam and replace with silicone. I prefer 10pts HL so most weight for me goes at the grip, a little at 12 o'clock for SW if needed.

Yes I am similar as I want more weight in the handle. I will be removing some of the foam as well to add more weight. I have added lead to 3 & 9 and will add more. I may add to 12 if I need to get the swing weight higher.

Strung them and added TW leather grips. Now at 325gm and 326gm. That leaves around 15gm to play with for balance and SW, plus OG lands me right about 345gm :)
Got to hit with one of @zipplock 's UP today for about 5-10min. BTW my main stick is a leaded k90, and recently I've been dabbling with an RF97.
The UP felt good, like a lighter version of the RF97. Definitely solid, not a noodle. Spin came easily and pretty control oriented. Lacks a little heft, but that's the whole point of it being a platform racquet. With a little lead I can see myself playing with it regularly. Oh crap, does that mean it is time to order a pair?

Some quick thoughts from playing 2 sets with the UP tonight. It is an easy switch to go from the UT to the 16/19 UP as it’s the same frame So it swings the same. The UP does have more pop to it. I was putting more spin on the balls so they were kicking up more. The control isn’t quite as good as the UT because of the string pattern but it’s still pretty good. The feel is very similar to the UT. I still think my UT feels a bit softer but that could be because the grommets are more broken in and the strings have softened up a bit. Still, this one is a keeper for days where I want a bit more power than my UTs or want to play a slightly different style.

i have added a leather grip and wilson overgrip to mine and probably about 7 grams of lead to the hoop. I think my static weight is currently at 341 but will mess with that and the balance in the morning. This was just a quick customization to get it close to my UTs in specs.

I had a chance to hit with these. For reference, my regular racquets are Head Graphene Touch Prestige Pro, 345gm, 31.0cm balance, 320 SW, PP Black Force at 45#.

I hit with the UP 16x19 at 335gm, 31.0cm balance, guessing around 315 SW, PP Black Force at 45#.

After the first couple of shots, my thought was that this racquet is equipment, not a toy. Many racquets feel "cheap/hollow", like a toy. Not this. The racquet is SOLID. The sound of this racquet is excellent, a nicely muted "thwack".

As far as flex, this feels pretty close to my PP, except the PP flexes at the throat. The UP to me feels like the flex is the same across the whole racquet, very UNIFORM flex. It is not a stiff racquet, but is also not a noodle. There is plenty of power in this frame.

Launch angle is a little higher than the PP, a little more spin. For me this is good.

So far I am very optimistic about this racquet. Next is to add a little weight at 12 o'clock to bring the SW up, then add weight at the tail to get back to 31cm balance.

Will report back after those adjustments. So far, so good.

Absolute BEST paint finish on any racquet I've ever had ... but how do they play?

About to hit for an hour or so. Will alternate with my normal racquets (Head Prestige Pro). Fingers crossed.

Looking awesome... perfect leather grip application and overgrip wrap, and amazing styling for the photos... but let's face it... you're working with great models. (y);)

Your hitting experience makes me want to just get out there with mine, which has just been strung and is in the middle of its modification experience. I might have to seek out some social tennis somewhere just to get a hit... I'll have to figure it out. I'm itching to play though...

Hope your experience with the UP 16x19 only continues to get better and better. :)
