Wilson Pro Labs: Ultra Pro (16x19) Official Thread

Awesome! Do you also have the UT? My 2 main racquets are the UT and the XT & Touch Prestige Pros.
I had V2 when it came out. I liked it, but always felt that frame needed a 16x19 pattern. Thank you Mr. Wilson.

The last 18x20 racquets I had were the Amplifeel 6.1 95 from 2012 or so (red/white ones). I've been playing open patterns since.

I had a chance to hit with these. For reference, my regular racquets are Head Graphene Touch Prestige Pro, 345gm, 31.0cm balance, 320 SW, PP Black Force at 45#.

I hit with the UP 16x19 at 335gm, 31.0cm balance, guessing around 315 SW, PP Black Force at 45#.

After the first couple of shots, my thought was that this racquet is equipment, not a toy. Many racquets feel "cheap/hollow", like a toy. Not this. The racquet is SOLID. The sound of this racquet is excellent, a nicely muted "thwack".

As far as flex, this feels pretty close to my PP, except the PP flexes at the throat. The UP to me feels like the flex is the same across the whole racquet, very UNIFORM flex. It is not a stiff racquet, but is also not a noodle. There is plenty of power in this frame.

Launch angle is a little higher than the PP, a little more spin. For me this is good.

So far I am very optimistic about this racquet. Next is to add a little weight at 12 o'clock to bring the SW up, then add weight at the tail to get back to 31cm balance.

Will report back after those adjustments. So far, so good.

You just cost me $250:-D

I love the UT but in search for more power and penetration without giving up the control of the UT, i stumbled upon the XT/Touch PP and have been happily hitting with both since. Your positive posts about the UP certainly have made my ears perk up. :)

I think the UP will end up being a better version of the Prestige Pro. I know that's a strange thing to say, but aren't the H19/22 supposed to be Wilson's attempt at making better Head racquets in the first place?

Wow. That's impressive because the PP is really excellent. (y)

And not strange at all. I find the UT to be a better more forgiving version of the IGYT Prestige MP so it would make perfect sense that the UP is a better version of the PP.

My UP 16x19 is ready to go... Static weight is 349g after mods and I'm not sure of the SW.

Started off at 287 unstrung, strung it with Tier 1 Black Knight 1.18mm in the Mains (50 lbs) and Babolat Origin 1.25mm in the Crosses (47 lbs). That should bring the SW to around 317. I added 2.25g at 3 & 9 o'clock respectively (4.5g total), and 1.5g at 12 o'clock (0.75g each side of 12, leaving a small gap for the stringing clamp). I then counter-balanced with about 6g at 7" above the butt cap, thickened the bottom of the butt cap a tad for a more flared butt cap, and added two Overgrips (one with no overlap and one as standard). Nor sure what that makes the SW, but it feels very nice to swing.

Now I just need to get out there and have a hit...

I see many people mentioning about smuggling past the wife, I got two ready for my Xmas present from the fam.... but I can swap them out for other racquets that cheaper and Santa will never know.

Like the way you think, Sir

The UP was supposed to ship on my birthday. My wife never knows what to get me so I told her she can just buy me this racquet. She gave me $200 for it because I couldn’t tell her that it really costs $250 + tax. ;)

Yeah good one. That’s what I usually do with my birthday, Father’s Day and Christmas gifts. The wife and kids usually gets me what I want (read: not need) tennis related.
my birthday is in about 3 weeks and the girls have already paid for my new artwork on my left arm.... so I will start to think what I want for Christmas... lol
(Am currently in discussions with my artist for another piece for my right arm though... but with the current situation, it will probably be booked in after the new year...)

Pics or it never happened ...

Tennis and tattoos, just sounds good when you say it out loud.

I have a question I’m hoping someone in this forum can answer for me.

The UT/UP has a head size of 97.
But the H19 is always given as 98.

If same mould why always recorded as different ?

My guess would be that 1 square inch is so insignificant and that rackets round up/down.

Marketing.

Been able to play a few times now, singles and doubles. Played around with weight. Here are where they ended up.
Racquet 1:
339gm
31.0cm
320SW

Racquet 2:
340gm
31.2cm
320SW

I must say, the racquets "feel" amazing. My Prestige Pros have been kicked out of the bag and I've switched to these racquets. Wilson did a great job with this racquet.

If you enjoy the feel of a solid, muted and uniform flex racquet, I highly recommend the Ultra Pro 16x19 :)

Wow. How is the UP’s power and penetration vs the PP? Also how’s the stability of the UP volleying hard groundstrokes? And serves...the PP serves big with precision. How does the UP compare?

Wouldn't have expected anything less from the GOAT racquet manufacturer. I may end up getting one for fun to lead up, but enjoying the heft of the RF97 on this 2nd run at them. Still no k90, but the 97 head is convenient on defense.

For me it's just a little better in every category. Sound is more muted, flex is more even, launch angle is a little higher. Plenty of power, easy deep balls, volleys are super solid, very easy to redirect pace. Serve is most important for me. PP is an excellent serving racquet. This is just as good. I think the kicker will end up being a little better with the Wilson. I really do think this is just a better version of the PP. Reminds me a LOT of the Youtek IG PP, but more muted than crisp, a little softer and more even flex vs throat flex, and a little more string available 97 vs 95. It's a winner.

So I have been able to spend a number of days hitting the UP 16m. My overall positive feelings toward the frame have not changed and I feel like it does everything better than the 18m version (just my opinion and I like 16x19 frames better). My overall takeaway is this - it gives you what you put in it (if you aren’t moving your feet well your shots will be short and underwhelming - like many control oriented frames that aren’t Babolats). Second, for me, it needs more weight. I will be adding more this week but I need more weight to get the consistent depth like my Blade V7 16m. Third, string it low. I strung it too tight and along with the low swingweight results in a lack of plow and spin - it has a ton of control. Lastly, it is a great frame and I applaud Wilson for doing this. It is really soft with great touch. The last time I played with such a soft frame was the Dunlop Hotmelt 200g which I believe was around a 58 stiffness. It wouldn’t surprise me if this frame isn’t 60 or below strung. I could be wrong but my racquet feels incredibly soft. My string is Wilson Revolve 17 in the mains and Wilson NXT 16g in the crosses 53 / 57. Too tight. Enjoy this great racquet everyone.

Hi,

Thank you for this interesting review.

The problem I have with my ultra tour 18x20 is that I cannot generate sufficient spin and the ball often does not fall back into the court and goes long... Which is the opposite with my clash 98 or blade 98s for instance... So "spin rackets" do suit me better but I also love the ultras because they have this addictive feel and control level...

Do you think the 16x19 will help me to generate enough spin that it goes not long like with my 18x20? Or it is a very close 16x19 pattern and I should expect to have the same problem?

What is interesting is that yesterday I tried the new pro staff v13 315gr and I was surprised the amount of spin I could generate with this stick... Do you think the level of spin of UP 16x19 is comparable to Pro staff v13?

Thank you for your feedback.

Thanks. I have hit with the Pro Staff CV 97. I have not hit with the new one but if I were to compare the UP 16m to the CV Pro Staff I would give comfort, control, feedback, touch to the UP 16m. It does all of those very well. I would give power and spin to the Pro Staff CV but that is probably because of the stiffness factor. To me spin is subjective. I can get good spin with UP 16m and I do believe it is a more open pattern than I thought it would be. I also get more spin with the UP 16m than my 18m UP. The UP 16m has three mains in the middle which opens it more than you think. Hope that helps.

Me too. A 2nd one that is.

The one thing that the UT or 18M UP has over it is control. The 16/19 UP has pretty good control but the UT has great control.

This frame definitely needs some weight added to it. I string mine in the 48-50# range so I'd suggest giving that a try.

I agree. BOTH of these frames need weight added. Would be horrible in their stock form.

Have you modified the racket by Silicone & lead as you did for your PPs?

Currently modified with lead at 12 o'clock and tungsten putty under the buttcap. Once I'm 100% settled on the final weight balance I'll remove the tungsten putty and replace the weight with silicone. Will go through a couple of strings jobs before I do that. Once added silicone can be a pain to remove. Want to make sure it's final specs before adding.

I'm intrigued by mine so far. Going to need a lot more time on the court, but I really like the feel. I think there's a lot of potential for me with this stick. Used it for a warmup and part of a set before switching to my regular stick. Unfortunately the match itself was a disaster and I could not get any rhythm whatsoever. Might sound contradictory I guess, but when I was hitting cleanly I was really happy with the result.

Received!

The 4 static weights (including the plastic/paper) are 307g, 307g, 309g, and 310g

Plastic/paper weighs about 2-3g - my balance rounded up to 3g

The 307g without the plastic is at 305g

This compares to spec at 305g

I will get one strung by the weekend and will report back (also stringing BP 16x19 so will compare)

For this review, I will be comparing the UP (16x19) to the BP (16x19) and my current racquet, the Yonex VCORE PRO 97 (2018) 310g. I used the same string setup for all 3 racquets from the same stringer.
  • String and tension used for test: Babolat NG 1.25mm x YPTF 1.20mm @ 55/50#
  • Tennis experience/background: 6-7 UTR
  • Describe your playing style (i.e. serve & volley): baseliner, SW forehand, 2HBH, 1st serve flat, 2nd serve kick/slice hybrid
  • Current racquet/string setups: Yonex VCORE PRO 97 (2018) 310g - static weight of 345g - 30.5cm balance (12pts HL) - mods from stock were adding leather grip and 3g total at 11/1, overgrip and dampener, standard string setup is either NG 1.25mm x YPTF 1.20mm @ 55/50# or Tour Bite Soft 1.25mm x YPTP 1.20mm @ 48/46#
  • How many hours did you play with the racquet? 2 hours
Comments on racquet performance for each stroke (each section should be 3-5 sentences minimum):
  • Groundstrokes: Very easy to swing from both wings. Can swing aggressively without loss of control. Adding some weight could really do damage.
  • Serves: Great control and pop. Good access to spin. Definitely needs some more weight to get that extra pop. Swings very naturally and easy to pronate.
  • Volleys: Slices through the air for a clean contact with the ball. My backhand volleys felt cleaner than normal. Very fun racquet to volley with - generally don't like volleying given my baseliner tendancies, but I felt like I had good control - racquet felt stable, solid, and manueverable.
  • Serve returns: Was returning against a medium pace server (probably 80-90 mph) so it held up fine, but I think without additional weight, it would struggle against faster servers.
Comments on racquet performance in each area (should be 2-3 sentences minimum)
  • Power/Control: Great control, not much free power from the racquet, but I think with some added weight, can do a lot of damage
  • Top Spin/Slice: Top spin and slices were great, slices were clean and really felt that I was carving the ball
  • Comfort: Extremely comfortable, felt pretty similar in comfort to my Yonex
  • Feel: Solid feeling from the frame, no weird vibrations or anything
  • Maneuverability: HL balance allowed me to quickly get the racquet in position for most shots, especially volleys
  • Stability: Very stable, but adding weight will help a lot
General reaction/comments on overall performance: Overall, a great hit and highly recommended. Although, I will likely be keeping my Yonex VCORE PRO 97 or switching to the Yonex REGNA 98. I think the UP will really shine once I add a leather grip and some weight at 9/3 or 10/2. This compares to the BP, which played a lot better in stock form - I think most people would be quite happy with the BP in stock form.

With that said, if I had to choose between the UP and BP, I would choose the UP (but with an added leather grip, overgrip, dampener, and 2-3g of weight at 9/3 or 10/2). My BP review --> https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/ind...-official-thread.680485/page-21#post-14756253

Funny. I came from the Yonex VCP97 310 too. Weighted to 345gm 10HL. Loved it, except top of hoop is too soft. I still have them.

Thanks for the review. Very detailed. Lots of information to process.
