Wilson Pro Labs: Ultra Pro (16x19) Official Thread

Wilson delayed my order that was placed on Sep 29th and the customer service really sucks, they apparently don't know where the racket is. it is not shipped, but none of the customer reps know where the racket is :/ Since they close the day by 3:30 CST, its very difficult to deal with them over the phone and emails are just too slow to respond. I am not sure if others had the same experience or not, but not sure if this is a good idea by Wilson to sell rackets directly instead of using the our sweet TW.

Keep us updated...
Second outing not so good. Although this is probably more of an issue on my part than the stick itself. I think my game is in a bit of a funk.

Sweetspot felt very tiny today. Felt even smaller than the regular Ultra Tour, but I demoed that maybe 2 years ago though... One thing I do like is that the launch angle is still low, but I haven't quite found my range yet. Missing flatter shots into the net, but sending plenty of my topspin shots long. One other thing is I maybe need to wrap my overgrip differently, as something feels off. Although it may be just getting used to the handle shape again coming from Yonex. I dunno. Will experiment with different weight placement also. I cut two strips of TW tungsten tape in half for about 6g and applied to 3 and 9. Might try shifting it to 10 and 2 next. Depending on how that goes I may reduce the weight. I do think I will add a leather grip at some point, but I haven't done so yet.

Also may just be a bad day for me. Poor playing again tonight. Then I wanted to stop at our local royal farms for some chicken after my match, turns out they close at 10... Then I get home and whacked my head against towel closet door. A bit disappointed right now.

Hope your day improves and you find the right configuration with the UP 16x19.

Mine was just delivered. 307.2g and 9.5 hl in the plastic. I'm shocked at how tight the QC is on the 16x19s so far. Haven't strung it up, but they shipped so fast I haven't had time to order my preferred string, but I'll put Multifeel/GW in it for starters.

BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK...

This report will be brief.

UP 16x19 sticks are fantastic!!!

I strung mine with Multifeel 1.25 mains and Ghost Wire 1.22 crosses (all I had) and hit volleys against the basement wall. It's definitely a UT at contact. Just really plush (maybe a half tablespoon extra butter in this one) but definitely needs weight, which is the whole point of these. Can't wait to get this on court and let it sing. UT feel and comfort with a caffeinated string bed is what I'm expecting. This could be very good!

I am getting mine strung up Friday..will measure ra, sw, and balance as my stringer has an rdc...
Edit- just measured the static weight nad balance.. its right on spec. Impressive. 31.5cm and 305gr without plastic

Got mine after waiting since Sept 29th! 320 gm strung with Luxilon ALU POWER, 32.5 (on table rough) measurement - SW felt
Like in lower 320s; pleased with the way it felt on my first play and will have measurements on RDC machine very soon;

I played with both the BP 16x19 and the UP 16x19 last night.

Started off with the BP and played best-of-12 games of tennis. Impressions are in the BP thread.

The UP 16x19 was excellent. I picked it up straight from the bag going into the second match of the night (another best-of-12). Felt plush, had great control, and feel, and I was immediately comfortable. It had great excess to spin, a slightly higher launch angle than the UT 18x20 (from memory - I will play them back-to-back next time I'm hitting to get the direct comparison), and plenty of power (mine is modified). I broke my opponents' serve straight away and it gave me great confidence that I could do it again (perform well on returns).

I then served and could place the ball well. The serves had very good power and movement. The first serves were penetrating and seemed to move well after the bounce (my opponent had several air swings because the ball seemed to skid past where he expected it to be), and the second serves had great movement and kick to them, and seemed to give him difficulties. In fact, as the night progressed and my first serves became less affective, solely due to my lack of fitness and match play (my lower back was getting tired and I couldn't put as much into them), my second serve kept me in the match and gave me confidence and comfort when serving that I will not be broken. I was able to move the ball around the service box and use well-placed slice and kick serves to constantly keep my opponent/ opponents guessing (when playing both singles and doubles).

On the groundstrokes, I could hit a full array of shots and vary the spin and degree of loop on my shots. I still need to work on my topspin lobs, but that will come with more time with the racquet, but angles and defensive shots were dialed in, as was the transition between flat and more spin loaded shots. I felt I could utilize the racquet to impart different amounts of spin to vary both the depth of my shots and the amount of movement off the court once my shots landed in my opponents' court, thereby keeping them on their toes.

For whatever reason, I was not comfortable on my BH side tonight (a problem I have when I haven't played much, no matter what racquet I use), therefore, I sliced more than coming over the ball. But whenever I did come over my BH, the shot was good. Therefore, this was more of an issue of my confidence in that shot and my willingness to use it in a match situation, rather than any fault of the racquet.

Where I will need more time with the racquet is on shots that needed absolute thread the needle precision. This is where, naturally, the UT 18x20 was better. From memory, the UT 18x20 had better control and precision from the get-go, but a bit less power and a slightly lower launch angle.

I am pretty confident that I could use them interchangeably in the same match, depending on what was needed.

The UP 16x19 is a brilliant racquet that made me look forward to the next time we will go into battle together.

I am also looking forward to playing the UT and UP back-to-back for a direct and immediate comparison (not relying on what the UT felt like from memory and with different strings and tensions).

To be continued...

The more I read your reviews the more I hate Wilson for not making those available in Europe. It doesn't make sense. And while I'm at it, I still don't understand the marketing strategy of the Pro Labs line. They should have blacked out the frames to increase the "pro stock" vibe, and they should definitely have created a bag line to match with some nice detailing as they did with the PS v13.
I believe it's a missed opportunity to create some brand value, albeit sales are never going to be anything but marginal.

Maybe they are just dipping their toes in the water and seeing how it goes. If the response is good, maybe they will expand things. On the distribution side of things... maybe it's just taking time and the racquets will be available in Europe soon. In Australia, we didn't get the 18x20 BP but we got the UP 16x19 immediately... so maybe they're just experimenting and seeing how things go in different parts of the world.

Hope they arrive in Europe soon.

I agree with this fully. And I did switch between the 2 of them last night without issues. I feel my serve is Faster and has more kick with the UP but do like the control of the UT better during rallies.

Great review. Thanks!

I should be hitting mine tomorrow interchangeably with my UT. Almost want to hit it bone stock the first time out just to see how much ground this animal of a string bed makes up in pop before adding weight. Something tells me it can probably be played lighter than the UT, but I'm torn because I'd like a close comparison. If I did weight it, I'd probably add a gram at 12, 2/10, 3/9, 5/7, and throat--maybe a few at the top of the grip. Your review has exceeded expectations. Already trying to sort out a purchase for a match for this one, maybe more. But we'll see after the weekend.

If I had to play it stock, I wouldn't play it ...

I get that and can feel even with just volleys against a wall that it's begging for lead. I'll probably add the essentials and tweak from there, but I can assure you I'll play it as light as I can tolerate. Too many good modern options out there to lug a log around.

So, what's the modified config of your UP 16x19 ?

Quoted his post from previous page for you. I've tried a couple different things with mine so far but am struggling to find something that works for me. Oddly enough it seemed best when I took all the weight off and played it stock. My impression right now though is that for me personally, this isn't the stick I'm looking for when comparing to my 97HD.

Sweet spot feels smaller
less power
more inconsistent with open pattern

My UP 16x19 is ready to go... Static weight is 349g after mods and I'm not sure of the SW.

Started off at 287 unstrung, strung it with Tier 1 Black Knight 1.18mm in the Mains (50 lbs) and Babolat Origin 1.25mm in the Crosses (47 lbs). That should bring the SW to around 317. I added 2.25g at 3 & 9 o'clock respectively (4.5g total), and 1.5g at 12 o'clock (0.75g each side of 12, leaving a small gap for the stringing clamp). I then counter-balanced with about 6g at 7" above the butt cap, thickened the bottom of the butt cap a tad for a more flared butt cap, and added two Overgrips (one with no overlap and one as standard). Nor sure what that makes the SW, but it feels very nice to swing.

Now I just need to get out there and have a hit...

2nd UP came in. This one is below specs which I guess is a good thing. I’d much prefer that as opposed to it being over specs. Subtracting for the plastic, it weighs 302g which is 3g lighter than specs.

My first UP was 304g so there’s a 2g difference between the 2.

Thanks @fundrazer for quoting my previous post (@Tennisist refer to post above for my set-up) ... I am trying to figure out my 97HD set-up. Not sure if the strings have gone dead from the previous user... or I just haven't gotten it right yet. Will see when I re-string and go from there. It was almost the best so far with no mods. Time will tell.

This report will be brief.

UP 16x19 sticks are fantastic!!!

I couldn't have appreciated this post until I hit mine. Did so tonight, and I'm speechless. What you said. I'll leave it at that until I hit it more. Mods include 2g at 12, two 12" strips of lead on alternating sides of the stringbed (total of 6g), and Yonex Supergrap. Right at 332g, 6pts hl, which is my current UT specs. I could add a little more weight, but this was a great start. I'll fill in more details after one more outing, but I think I'll be getting more of these.

How much higher is the launch angle? I sort of want to try the 16x19, but I already have an 18x20 plus a matching UT and another 18x20 on the way. The holic in me wants to get this, but the player looking to move up a level wants to stick to what I have and spend more money on coaching. I'm thinking it will be the coaching until these hit the used market. Someone will dislike it.

For me, the PP is a little higher than the UT, and the UP 16x19 is a little higher than the PP. Hope that helps.

Just want to comment on the paint quality for those who are interested.
Played a few times with the UP 16x19 and hit the ground a handful of times with a backhand slice and instantly said oh that’s going to be bad but to my surprise there was nothing, not even a scratch. Maybe the clear coat of these pro stock racquets help from scratching.

This is based on impressions from one hour-and-a-half session, so take this for what it's worth. The launch was noticeably higher compared to the UT, but the dwell time was remarkable, which made me confident from the first hit. Achieving bite and carve on groundstrokes and serves (lot of push as well on serve) is really effortless, which I can really appreciate because my miss with the UT is usually slightly long. Definitely an increase in power as well from the string bed but no loss of control for me, personally, because it allowed me to relax and play on autopilot anywhere from 75-90%. Oh, and I really should mention that if I can't drive the ball flat down the line with my forehand or slice low and skidding cross court with my backhand, it's a deal breaker. This frame just performs.

I think the UT might transmit a little more raw feel, but that's probably because of the extra strings. This 16x19 really opens up a very familiar frame and plays a little more plush and ever so slightly muted, imo. It's smooth as silk but still lets you know exactly where you are on the string bed. I've honestly had thoughts after one session of selling all four of my UTs and stockpiling these. Trying to resist the former, but we'll see.

Had more time today with the UP 16 after adding weight to the hoop and and handle. This racquet has sublime feel like the UT. I found it to be more spinny and powerful with a higher launch angle like you would expect. Accuracy seemed not too far off from the UT. I also had more pop and spin on serves vs. the UT. I can't imagine that anyone who is a fan of the UT wouldn't also be a fan of this racquet.

I'll be asking Santa for a couple more. Probably will end up with a matched set of coal again though ...

I swore by the UTs but have just picked up my 2nd UP 16M. They are quite similar. I may use the UT for doubles where that extra bit of control on wide angles would be handy and the UP 16/19 for singles where I would prefer a bit more power.

Played 3 sets of doubles this morning. UP 16x19 still have plenty of control if you decided to go just one racquet. I'm convinced this is a special racquet. I only buy new racquets if they are an improvement over what I have, and I'm only like 9 months or so on the Head PP. Granted I took a chance on these and would have sold them if they weren't an improvement, but dammit they were.

I agree if only going with 1 get the UP16. I already own UT's so for me I can pick and choose when to use each one.
