Wilson Pro Labs: Ultra Pro v3 (18x20) Official Thread

Confirmed that ordering 16x19 grommets will get you 18x20 and vice versa. Weird thing is the bag on the “18x20” grommets says 16x19 and the bag on the “16x19” doesn’t list a string pattern just says Ultra Pro.

I'll be able to double confirm tomorrow. Once I get those in I'll be reaching out to CS anyway for the return label. I'll see if they can confirm they fixed the issue on their end.

Which makes perfect sense .... I think half the things we read here are 1/2 truths.. really think Wilson would not correct a mistake if one was made ?
I've also received incorrect grommets in the past. I think the truth is that the issue is so haphazard that Wilson doesn't actually know how to fix it.

Im gonna stick with the ultra pro long term I think so would stockpile some grommets as well

i've now received 8 sets of each 16x19 and 18x20 ultra pro v4 grommet sets directly from wilson in the past week. the two were switched. seems difficult to identify when this occurred, but it'll require some manual checking either way.
the actual grommet sets aren't actually labeled as "v4", just "Ultra Pro" (Stock # WR8430601001) or "Ultra Pro 16x19" (Stock #WRG017900), just like the v3 sets that i previously had

so how can you tell which set you have?
the easiest way is to check the throat grommet piece: 16x19 has 6 holes, 18x20 has 8 holes. if you're traumatized from wilson not having grommets in stock for 2 years and now you're psychotic about having all grommet pieces that actually fit your rackets, the side and bumper grommets have lettering horizontally on the 18x20 ("GR190") while the lettering is vertical on the 16x19 ("GR190B02").

Incredibly insightful post on grommet-gate 2022

guess we all have to order both sets and audit the throat section

that would be my recommendation. given that Wilson seems to be aware of the issue, maybe they'll correct it at one point and end up with grommet packaging labeled as one string pattern but really contain one or the other. given how the online store is, i wouldnt be surprised if we end up with a mixed bag of parts either

Imagine ordering both and getting all of the wrong ones.

Guys sorry for interrupting while talking about crappy grommets

Do you have any recommended strings in 16gauge for ultra pro 18/20?

I`m using signum pro firestorm 16 reel from blade pro 16/19 to ultra pro 18/20 (strung 44/43lbs) but getting running out.

prefered soft polyester. (recommend except gosen g-tour 17g cause i have it)

Black Knight 1.23 is pretty great in it. Depends on what you like though…. I find BK fairly soft, but others don’t. We’re fickle beings.

never heard of Blackknight in South korea.
looks like Tierone is not distributed in Korea.
thanks anyway.

I'm liking Tour Hex in mine (better than the Big Hitter Black I have in my other one). I haven't yet strung up Black Knight in it but a BK/GW hybrid is my next planned stringjob.

What leather grips are those @shinminsoo86? They look darker than most.

Leather grip is wilson, which used previous racquets from Wilson blade V7 -> V7 PRO and now UP for almost 2yrs.

Just tanned upside due to i`m apply overgrip like Wawrinka.

thanks for your recommendation.

Not 16g but my fav so far is Mayami hit pro

appreciate your recommendation

I don't know how much people care anymore but I finally got around to measuring my UP18s and thought it was interesting that the TWs and SWs were pretty good, while it was the static weights that were all over the place:

This is what I would do if they were mine.

#1, #3 and #4 ideal matched playing trio @325-330SW

#2 heavy weight beast @ 335SW

#5 light weight screamer @ 320SW

Out of sheer curiosity why are your TW without a decimal? That could make a small difference in your choice as well

I've still only spec'd 2 of my 6. But I have those up to 350g, 31.4cm, 340SW.

I like the whippy feeling currently but may come in closer to 345 to get some extra snap on the serve.

I’m surprised this frame doesn’t have more of a following on the pro tour. Guess the prestige-like beam design is falling out of vogue

I had one that was at 340g like you...and I preferred the heavier one I had. So now its lead under the length of bumperguard, leather grip + 6g tungsten in the buttcap, T1 OG + dampener. These are now actually the heaviest frames I've hit with as of late...but they feel nothing like the heaviest.

I preferred these over the PT2.0, Blade Pro, Artengo, Top banana, regular Blade, Pure Strike, Pure Aero 23, and Diadem Elevate FS.

Saying a lot you prefer the UP to the various other players/popular frames out there that youve presumably spent good time with

The UP 18 has that prestige profile/feel/whip with some wilson inherent pop due to maybe the layup. For me, a Wilson pallet is home. So that's another aspect of my adoration of this frame

I absolutely prefer frames with "classic" feel. While I can play with modern muted frames like the Pure Strike, or even Yonex frames, there's nothing like the feel of frames like the UP, BP, PT2.0, etc.

The UP is flexy in the right spots, takes well to polarized setups which is great for those of us who enjoy higher SW frames.

About to string up my new pair finally. They’ll be swinging at 297 unstrung SW, and then I’ll sort out the other weight later.

17g Wilson gut/head hawk rough and I’m thinking 52/48

Finally spec'd out my other 4 rackets. So here's the unstrung specs (with plastic still on handle, placard removed). Have a newer, better scale, hence the more precise weights for the latter 4.

Thanks. Sounds good. I will switch my tour bite with max power and see how it goes. May i ask - how much lead do you have in the hoop?
I just tried a combo of tour bite mains and vanquish crosses 47/49 and it suits this stick very well (I use 18x20).
Also I added leather grip and 2g at 9-10, 2g at 3-2, and 1g at 11, 1g at 1. I found thst weighting better than normal 9/3 or 12 proper.

I think this was about the UP18? I strung it at 48. Seems about right. I’m not maining it, so still have the BK in it for now.
gotcha. this summer there was such a huge heat wave where i lived that i had to go from 50lbs in the winter to 55lbs in the summer to keep the ball in. (this is the tension according to my gamma drop weight machine, so it could be off, but it was a big increase) i have BK 1.23 in now at 57lbs it feels a little too harsh at the moment.

for me, i've only stuck to 16L or 17 gauge, depending on the brand (turns out 16L with Yonex and Luxilon is 1.25 but 17 gauge with head is also 1.25) to help compensate with the tighter pattern. that being said, i'm excited to try luxilon alu spin, which is 1.27, in my UT 18 20

Sorry posted this on the wrong thread

Boys I have a question for you guys that string their own PB' 18x20" racquets. Do you start the crosses at the bottom of the hoop or the top when stringing with one piece.

I ALWAYS, and most stringers will agree, you should always string from head to throat on crosses. If doing one piece with mains ending at the throat, you often have to do a variation of Around the World pattern to achieve this. Alternatively, just string two pieces.

Although many manufacturers have 1 piece instructions that say to string crosses from throat to head, the stringing world doesn't like this.

Any info on when Ultra Pro v4 will be available in Europe? I really like the new paintjob and would like to try the Ultra Pro 16x19

So, I asked Wilson specifically which grommets to order for the Ultra Pro 18X20, since the ones I ordered originally were mislabeled and 16X19. They pointed me to a product listing, I ordered it, and got 16X19...
