Wilson Ultra Tour (Monfils)

Interesting comparison, but I completely agree with you. Imo, the new 93P definitely has more of a plush, classic Prestige feel compared to the previous version. I also found the flex of the new model to be much more pronounced as well, which helped bolster the effect. It would be interesting to hear more of your impressions if you have any, not many people have hit with the new version it seems.

It was a demo my friend had. I’m would like one but will shuffle my feet on new racquets for the next 15 minutes or so.

I'm seeing that the ultra tour is super cheap right now online. I have one Angell TC97 18x20 and love it. How similar are they? Is it worth it to buy another tc97 or buy stock up on ultra tours?

Not similar at all unless you modify the wilson a lot. I have two TC 97 18x20's I'd sell if you're interested.

Though I always enjoyed the feel of the TC95 18x20 I was looking for a bit more forgiven frame. So I purchased the TC97 18x20 and I tried to getting used to its stiffer/crisper feel to no avail.
Then I discovered to the Ultra Tour and I was blown away by its sensational feel that is similar as the TC95.

I've never loved the Ultra Tour shade of blue, but other than that, I think this pj is okay. I like that they changed the navy blue to black for the Pro. And it's all glossy, like its predecessor.

I guess you like lower RA frames. The TC95 70RA is definitely much crisper than the TC97.

I'm hitting the TC95 18x20 (63 RA) better than ever, but 1mm more of beam thickness and another inch or two in the hoop would be welcome. My resistance is weakening; I'll have to hit the UT soon.

The new Ultra Tour has a 20.6 cross section compared to 20 for the previous one according to the Wilson website. So it may not be identical to the previous one.

Anyone else notice the blooper? Still says Ultra Tour on the racquet on Wilson’s website if you zoom in :)

Thank you. Do you have an idea as to what the target unstrung swing weight of the ultra tour is? On paper it looks like it would be around 290.

I would say something around 290 would be correct assuming strings add roughly 30 pts. Just be aware that the QC is rather dreadful, for example my two sticks measured 270 and 286 before being matched.

Wow that is atrocious. I wouldn’t even buy them if I couldn’t have them sifted through to find some that are somewhat similar in swingweight, but that’s me.

It's not so much an issue for me as I was always intending on upping the overall weight and thus SW. However, if you plan on playing near stock specs and buy them sequentially rather than in bulk for relative matching, you do run the risk of the Wilson QC roulette.

I was looking at the TW racquet tools like sweet zone and power potential. The ultra tour sort of scores high. For example, higher than the clash 100, but the UT is known for smaller sweet spot and low power ? Maybe I don't understand what the tool is saying.

Well it’s actually a really good thing that they didn’t change anything.. as for the price, it costs what the old one used to cost back when it was launched.. not sure what’s with the surprise, it’s like this for all rackets alike.

I have 2 of the v2.. haven't really liked them as much as my Yonex VCP 97's... I will wait till this spring and summer and hit with them more in warm weather and see if I can get used to them. Not sure if 18x20 is for me.

Many great options to choose from.

Since it's a tight-ish 18x20, I tend to use thinner gauge strings (18 gauge or 18L) to get more spin, etc.

I would try Cyclone 18L (1.15mm) @ 50M/47C or MSV Co-Focus (in blue) 1.18mm @48M/45C (tried this in my Angell TC95 18x20 63RA and it was great - will be trying it on my UT).

I have used Weiss Cannon Red Ghost (1.18mm) on other racquets. It's shaped, has great spin, is very comfortable, but is a reddish-pink colour so not sure if you'd like the combo. You could pair it with a white-ish cross and go for the blue, red, white theme, but it's all personal.

If you try Hyper-G, I'd personally go with the 1.15mm version... more spin and softer feel. I used it in my Phantom Pro 93P @ 48M/45C but I'd go lower next time... maybe like 45/42.

I hope that helps. :)
Just finally got to string my UT with 1.15mm(18g) Hyper G after trying the 17 (and liked it). I also had some syngut in stock so my other UT has a hybrid of Wilson Red Alert 16 / Babolat Hurricane Tour, which is not bad. The thing I notice without playing is the weight difference between the strings !
Anxious to try the HyperG in thinner gauge. I also tried a lower tension @42-40. Usually around 48-50. So two new changes (should probably have stuck to just one).

My hybrid test idea came from having a few rallies with my friend's Gravity with Gut/poly, it wasn't too bad at all !

I often wonder and go back and forth as well. Why are you not sure that pattern/model is for you ? Sometimes I'd like to go left field and add a Pure Aero to the bag just to have something polar opposite (might be wrong, I have never tried one).

Sounds great. I'm eager to hear how you go with them and what your opinions are.

There is a big difference between the weight of the strings and also the amount of spin that can be achieved within the tight string pattern. Using the thinner gauge of string also helps to achieve a higher launch angle with tighter 18x20 string patterns and makes the string bed feel less stiff and boardie.

I hope the lower tension is to your liking... it is usually a good idea to make one change at a time. That way you can properly evaluate each new parameter. Hopefully, it all works out perfectly. If not, you can always try between the 48-50 and 42-40. These days I start at 48M/45C (with polys) and go from there depending on how the racquet feels and performs.

Keep me posted. Cheers

Had a fun and good session tonight. It is indoor clay, so maybe why I liked the added power from 18g and lower tension. I tend to play further back than summer hardcourts. Back to the strings, it was really different feeling than 17g and 48lbs. I thought I had good power and more spin.

Another test will be after a few hours, how the drop in tension feels. I'll adjust from there. I have another Ultra Tour and set of 18g waiting.

Who uses a modified ultra tour in this thread? How much weight did you add...where? Overall specs?

Was thinking about picking one of these up but I like my racquets spec’d out around 12.5 ounces with a swing weight of 330-340 and 8-10 points head light.

Just curious how an ultra tour would play with those types of specs.

I think no one uses it without customization, at least on this forum. It sucks if you don’t add weight, both of mine came with SW on the 270s.. ball goes nowhere. Maybe get a demo and add some lead to the hoop and handle to get it where you need it to be.

It plays absolutely amazing but it’s not the easiest racquet to play with compared to what’s out there. Wouldn’t recommend it to someone less than a 5.0, because it’s gonna feel great but you would probably not play your best tennis with it. Just my opinion..

It’s awesome to have great feel and control and to play with a pro-stock like stick, but people forget there’s a reason tweener/modern racquets sell way better. For 99% of players it’s just more likely they will play much better with them.

Does it really suck without lead ? I have not tried it without but was wondering. I think my two were around 322-325 SW strung depending on the strings.

My two UT are about at what you want. 12.1oz, around 8pts bal, SW should be around 330-335.

True that it's not the easiest racquet to hit and probably not the hardest as well. As I was saying in my last posts , I am testing thinner strings and looser. It's like having another racquet. Probably a good racquet for gut hybrid as well if you like that.

I am not saying it's so hard to play with. The sweet spot and power might be harder to find than another bigger racquet. I had a Radical LM MP in the bag and I thought the Ultra was easier to play with. TW University does have good stats for sweet spot and power potential. I am not sure you need to be a 5.0 like stated before, but a 5.0 might find the sweet spot more often and have his feet planted more often for more power like most "players" racquet. For example, a friend of mine that has a Gravity (100sqin) MP when he tries my Ultra he will say the sweet spot might be a bit smaller but he thinks he gets more out of the Ultra when he gets it.

What makes the racquet so hard to play with?

Small head size (relative to 100sqin)
Very small sweetspot
Very low-powered
Very dense pattern and low launch angle (harder to hit with spin and clear the net)

That being said, when you do get everything correct, the buttery feel is supreme. It’s just so freaking hard to get everything right all the time. And then there’s fitness... you just have to place yourself perfectly and hit the ball with perfect timing, or else either you shank it or it just floats to the middle of the opponents court.

At least that’s my experience with it. Switched to Gravity Tour and all of a sudden I started winning more and my hitting partners started commenting on how my shots were way heavier and deeper. Don’t quite get the feel the UT gives me when used properly, but it’s the closest I’ve gotten to it.

If I were a 5.0 on top of my game and fitness level, probably wouldn’t have bothered switching away from it.

I've got two UT's which are customised to roughly the spec you are after (albeit slightly little lighter) and they play great, so I can't see why that wouldn't work for you. The issue you will have is that the Wilson QC is all over the place so the location of my lead placement will almost certainly be in different positions to where yours will need to go to meet the same spec.

If it helps here are my specs going from: unstrung pre-customisation —> unstrung post-customisation —> strung post-customisation

Racket 1
Weight: 306 —> 320 —> 344
SW: 286 —> 299 —> 330-35 (estimate as I didn't get SW tested post stringing)
BP: 31.6 —> 31.0 —> 32.5

Racket 2
Weight: 304 —> 320 —> 344
SW: 270 —> 299 —> 330-35 (estimate as I didn't get SW tested post stringing)
BP: 30.5 —> 31.0 —> 32.5

A hitting partner that has the Gravity says the same when he tries my Ultra. He says the sweet spot of the Gravity doesn't give as much as when he hits it nicely with the Ultra. Then when I try his Gravity, I find it's easier, bigger sweet spot. He's kind of looking for something in between,he had an ezone 98 in mind.

I tend to usually put my lead at the 3&9 or 10&2 positions. Where did you end up putting yours?

I guess I like a racquet with a higher twist weight to make a racket feel really stable.

on both of mine I have 4g total at 3-9. One of them has an added 1g at 12 and that same one has 3g in the throat. Then they both have weight in the handle to bring the balance down. Both of my UT came in at same weight but different balance (from memory about 2-3mm and SW (about 3))

Good read re: mods.
question - is there any point to mod the UT to the Blade 98 spec? my current Blade 98 18x20 spec is about 339g/33.5/340SW. So I’d like to knowhow different the UT would be at that spec, if it is possible to mod to that spec (considering the shocking QC...). Thanks.

I used to play with lead at 3&9 and a leather grip but to get to my desired specs, most of the lead is now at 10 & 2 and also in the handle. I’d recommend using the TW racket customiser tool to figure out where you need to place yours.

I also prefer a leather grip on my racquets.

Anybody put any silicone or blue tack into the handle?
I did but not alot of space unless you scrap a bit of the foam.

Why not ? I think that looks possible.
