That's certainly what it seemed like today, although Bouchard put up a meager resistance. She's got to start figuring out how to stay in the match when she's not necessarily the one dictating all the rallies. She won't be able to avoid the Serena's, the Sharapova's, the Li's and the Azarenka's every time.
I agree, Genie has a lot to work on, but she's 20 with a killer work ethic. She'll get there. I also think strategy needs to play a part in this. Genie will need a plan B that she can incorporate into her game. Would have been interesting to see her drop back on the return, use the slice, something to switch up the looks she was giving Petra.

When someone with as much power is as zoned in as Petra was today, there's very little anyone could have done. Accept that you've been outplayed and move on.
She didn't even try and make any adjustments. At some point Bouchard has to realize she can't take that aggressive service return position when players like Kvitova are serving that well. She might have had a better chance to place the return instead of just bunting it back. On her own serve if she's going to take that much pace off, at least try and serve into Kvitova's body.

evert was getting on my nerves. she was questioning kvitova's commitment to tennis and talking about she knows bouchard will be ready to win us open. like b.tch the slam count is kvitova 2,bouchard 0.
Was Evert referring to Kvitova's history of poor fitness and her recent adulterous relation with "the worm?" What else could she mean--if one considers the past few years of Kvitova's career?

I don't think she'll have to. I think people are underestimating just how much power Petra has especially when zoned on grass. She dominated Sharapova in 2011 playing just like she did today, and Sharapova has a lot of power.

Li Na doesn't have that much power in comparison. Genie could beat her, plus Li is what? 29 years old. Serena is 32, and she's one of a kind anyway. Genie has come close to beating Sharapova already, and tbh Sharapova's serve is shaky at times, as is Azarenka's.

Kvitova's serve was her main weapon today because Genie could not attack it as she normally does to basically everyone else. In short, Genie can beat all the players you mentioned just because she can attack their serves. I honestly think this match is a bit of an anomaly where the whole theory that Bouchard can't beat power players is concerned.

How many players do you think could have handled Kvitova the way she played today?
Nobody.

Because she's not playing with any significant difference than the years since her first major
You're confusing style of play with execution of said style of play.

Sampras went three years without winning a major between his first and second slqm. Wh as t say you to that?

There were at least two shots that Kvitova hit today that were just ridiculous -- Nadal-like gets/winners on a dead run. When you're in that sort of zone, nobody's gonna beat you.

Even though she didn't show it at this final, Bouchard has the mental aspect pretty well in hand to be a future GS champion. But it's also entirely possible she spends her future as a semi-finalist/finalist, the fate of Berdych/Ferrer/Davydenko/Safina/Zvonereva. My guess is that she's gonna win a couple, but her career might be more like Sabatini's than Graf's.

Sorry to be late to the party as I had to take my nephews and niece out and missed the whole thing, but I am very surprised that Kvitova won by such a score. I truly thought Bouchard was going to give her a better fight than that.

Was it nerves at her first Slam final? I wish I'd managed to watch the game.

Not at all. Kvitova was in beast mode and blew her off the court

Bouchard perhaps could've played a tiny bit better, but no. Kvitova was just on fire. It's a cliche I know, but I don't think anybody was beating her today.

Bouchard's serve deserted her. The match stats say she only got 46% in on her first and didn't win enough points on her second either (36%). So that could maybe be put down to nerves. By contrast, Kvitova got 83% first serves in. That, and her powerful groundstrokes and returns, quickly swung things in her favour. Kvitova looked determined and focussed right from the start. She just didn't let Bouchard into the match.

Oh I agree with all of this. Kvitova would have beaten anyone playing like she did today. I also agree that Bouchard has the goods to handle the other top players. I just meant that I think she needs a little more than she had today when she's up against those players on a regular basis, at least until Serena and Li start to decline for good.

That being said, I think nerves played a huge part in Bouchard letting Kvitova bully her to a certain degree. That and her serve sort of failed her, even if she never had a huge serve to begin with. In a nutshell: she was just putting herself in a position to be bullied almost all match, on serve and on the return. She was hardly ever able to plant herself on the baseline and dictate like she does so well.

Bouchard stood on the baseline all match, making her hit a load of shots on the half-volley, and generally it seemed a bad strategy. Kvitova played brilliantly, lights out, huge serve, shots all over the place hard and deep from both wings. A crushing performance, Bouchard didn't change her gameplan, refused to step back and try and get in some rallies, and in the power game there was only one winner.

What amazes me is the lack of objective comments from the experts, even the ex top players who should have seen this coming. They are all so sugary nice about everyone never facing the facts.
Actually, after the women's SF, MaryJoFernandez mentioned this being good experience for Bouchard even though she won't win the title. Before the match today, she gave Bouchard higher marks than Gilbert did for Kvitova.

i wasn't saying it wasn't legitimate i just felt it was silly bringing it up about a two time wimbledon winner vs someone with no slams. genie has nothing...so there is no comparison. add that to chris's overall genie bias...

Then explain why she did not win another W title until 2014? She is playing much of the same game as before.

That. I'm no Kvitova expert, but I guarantee she isn't able to play at the level she did today for every match. She is known to be an up and down player. When she has a down day, many people can beat her. When she has an up day like today, probably not very many can beat her. She just had an exceptional day today. She played ridiculously well.

Seems to me, most people here are either horny teenage boys or don't watch WTA tennis to vote for Hypechard. Predicted 2 easy sets for Petra. Didn't realize it would be this easy.

agreed, bouchard is easy on the eyes but she is overhype even more then dimitrov(though dimitrov beginning to deserve it) said petra in 3, and wake up to this spectacle.

At 20 years of age, Bouchard is the youngest Grand Slam finalist since 19 year old Wozniacki at the 2009 US Open.

As mentioned in another thread, Azarenka was the last first time GS finalist to win a Slam (2012 Australian Open). Since then, there has been a succession of 6 first time Slam finalists, none of whom succeeded or have (as yet) made another Slam final: Errani (2012 French Open), Radwanska (2012 Wimbledon), Lisicki (2013 Wimbledon), Cibulkova (2014 Australian Open), Halep (2014 French Open) and Bouchard (2014 Wimbledon).

Surprised at the score line. Kvitova played perfect even better than she did in 2011.

Nothing Bouchard can do.

Kvitova was great, but not "best match of her life" great. She can play better. In fact, I don't think she played better today than she did against Venus earlier in the tournament.

The difference between the Venus match and the Bouchard match was the opponent. Venus's serve was also almost impossible to break, and she at least managed to break Kvitova once and trouble her a few other times.

So ultimately, I would classify Kvitova's form today as "almost unbeatable." She would beat Serena/Vika/Sharapova given their current form, but she might not have beaten them back when they were playing better (2012, etc.).

Perfect circumstances for Bouchard after a disappointing loss. She can go home, relax (as she said she plans to do) and prepare for the next big event, the Rogers Cup, which is right at home in Montreal. Time to focus on the summer hard-court season.

Great day for Kvitova -- perfect tennis.

Many congratulations to Genie Bouchard: showing amazing progress. It's a great achievement to reach a Wimbledon final.

She played an opponent who--for the first time in majors appearances this year--seemed caught in the moment.

Deal with that.
I don't think SLD76 is taking anything away from Bouchard. He's just giving props to Kvitova. That's the way I look at it and most people are looking at it. Only a select few are making rash judgments on Bouchard.

Incredible.

Are you so Kvitova-defensive that you compare her to Sampras? Why not just tell us she will win 7 Wimbledon titles, as that statement would be just as inapplicable as comparing a player just about everyone knew--early on--was a force that would change the game (Sampras) to Kvitova.

Come on.

Moreover, a player such as Azarenka actually defended her AO titles, and was in back to back USO finals (Kvitova has only been in two majors finals), but has recieved a boatload of criticism of her skills and place in the game--more than Kvitova today.

Curious about the difference in analysis.....

What the hell is your problem? ? Are you that butthurt for Bouchard?

And please..no none knew Pete was gonna be a 14 slam champ in those three years between 1990 uso and 1993 Wimbledon..so again, what say you to Sampras 3 year gap between slams..or djoker for that matter.

Dam. Dude..Bouchard got whipped it ain't the end of the world lol.

You talk about being objective but all your ranting just sounds like your girl crush got spanked

I don't think Bouchard was nervous due to her first final appearance.

Kvitova was simply playing too well and didn't allow Bouchard to play offensively at all during the whole match.

Kvitova did deal with it..quite convincingly too.

Also no first time slam excuses. Kvitova spanked sharapova in her maiden Wimbledon final. Try again.

Deal harder.

Amazing effort from Kvitova to win a very well deserved second Wimbledon title. She absolutely decimated Bouchard, who played well but was outmatched.

I want Bouchard to win but what's with all the Kvitova bashing?

She played great tennis in the final and there's nothing Bouchard could do. Heck, even Serena at her best wouldn't have beaten Kvitova. She was so good in the final that it takes an ATP player to beat her !

The only one bashing is thundervolley. His new crush is apparently Bouchard. I think he is taking the loss harder than her.

I mean. .it's only gut wrenching when you had a chance and blew it. But when you get steamrolled you just shrug it off and say too good.

I said this in another thread, but no woman on Earth could have defeated Kvitova today. All the stars aligned for her for sure. She played similarly against Sharapova three years ago. Should be interesting to see if she can raise her game consistently enough to be a force in any of the other grand slam events anytime soon.

It is frustrating to see someone with such apparent talent to only show it once or twice in a three year period. Hopefully Kvitova can work on her consistency and become a force throughout the year and grand slams not just Wimbledon.

Lisicki was caught in a moment last year.

This was a master class annihilation. Talent vs Hype.

Bouchard, with her wretched tennis technique on her groundstrokes, pathetic serve and boundless arrogance was taught a lesson not to buy into media hype, just because she's a pretty blonde and speaks perfect English and predicted to be the next big thing.

The biggest winner was Sharapova. ....she is still the reigning blonde darling of tennis lol. It would have been fitting symmetry had Bouchard won and become an overnight sensation like Maria did 10 years ago.

But as it is, Maria can rest easy til the USO , lmao

This was a humbling experience for the rising young star from Canada. I cringed at her Justin Beiber comments, hoping that he would take notice of her, now that she made the Wimbledon final, and hoped that he would come watch her...and they could be together if he cleaned up his act...it's like she was just doing it to attract that dude! Sheesh!

Great win for Kvitova, I am a big fan of her game when she is on.

Yes, she has the mjor hots for him. All she kept talking about was, how he might notice her now. She was waiting for him to send her a message before the final...LOL, maybe that is why she was blown off the court. j/k.

I just rolled my eyes at this Bieber blabber coming out of her mouth. Her aim in life is to be his main squeeze! And she thought W title would do that for her! LOL
