Yeah, no. Federer was the older player in the semifinal and had more need to conserve energy, physical and mental. Not to mention, he had the final to look forward to. None of which is true now. Djokovic is the younger player and there is no subsequent match. The harder he works this set, the harder Federer will have to work too. It's not like Nadal is waiting in the post-final.

I mean I don't understand why the best returner ever would tank after being 2-0 down, but sure, after being two breaks down he definitely is tanking.

It's two things: 1) Gamesmanship, and 2) Energy management.

If the other guy is redlining his level over yours, why waste the energy trying to get back a break if you just don't feel mentally there? Instead, better to just take a mental break, let the other guy feel like he's playing the best tennis ever, and then come back in the next set completely focused.

I think it is a great psychological tactic. If Djokovic breaks Federer in the first service game... do you know how demoralizing that will be to Federer? Especially if Federer thinks he's just playing the greatest tennis ever.
