Boy, I still haven't fully recovered from this match, tbh. I don't think I ever will. I wasn't even rooting for anyone in particular, although in general I prefer Djokovic. I enjoy and admire both players, and just wanted to see a good match, but it was better than this.
In terms of level of tennis I don't think it's the best match ever (easily in the top-10 though) But in terms of drama/prestige/scenario/legacy/history this final is still unmatched and will remain forever. Most prestigious tournament in the world, final, number #1 and #2 at the time, best players of the century on grass, total of 36 slams on the court before the match (record), oldest slam final since 1971 (37+33=70 years), 2nd longest match of Federer's career (after Rome 2006 final), longest Wimbledon final EVER, longest match of Wimbledon 2019, record of points between the loser and winner (-14), first 12-12 tie-break in the history, first time the champion wins 3 tie-breaks in a slam final, 2nd time in open era the GS winner saves match points (after Gaudio in 2004), etc... I'm still blown away.
And 2 years later, this match seems even more important for the slam Race. Somehow I doubt it would be 21-19 right now if Federer had won this match. We will never know if Djokovic would have 19, or 18 or would still be stuck at 15, but I can positively say he wouldn't be aiming for the CYGS at the moment. I'm also quite confident when I say this is the first and ONLY time we'll get to see 2 guys with 15-20 slams and 600+ weeks at number #1 playing an epic 5th set tie-break in a slam final, let alone with such a dramatic 5th set. If it happens again one day we won't be here to witness it. This match (more than any other) will be remembered and talked about for decades, no matter who wins the slam race in the end. I bet in 2040 we will still be reading threads about 40-15 on tennis forums.
