Wimbledon 2019 is even worse now

I don't see it that way. I thought he did incredibly well and fought very hard for his age given that he had a monumental task ahead of him.

Back in 2019 /2020 I did think that it's only going to get worse but glad it hasn't for me. Time heals all. Tbh I'd say I'm thankful for the 2017-2020 seasons. :)

Federer could have been the slam leader if he had been a bit more clutch,

He lost 11 slam finals: 6 to Nadal, 4 to Djokovic and 1 to Del Potro, the only 3 players who could beat him at those stages
Among the 11 slam finals he lost, 5 of them went all the way to five sets, where he had chances to win, in my opinion, at least 4 of those five:
  • Wim 2008 (had break points in the fifth set, though he saved a match point in third or four set tiebreak)
  • AO 2009 (had solid chances, lost important points, heartbreaking)
  • USO 2009 (was leading 2-1 in sets, he was two points away of winning the match)
  • Wim 2014 (he made a comeback in the fourth set, though it's fair to say that this one would have been Djokovic's fault had Fed won it)
  • Wim 2019 (everybody knows what happened)

He lost USO 2015 final to Djokovic in four sets with a horrible breakpoint conversion rate (4 from 23, having BPs in 11 games of the match). Maybe the non five set final he could have won if he was more clutch)
He lost two slam semis with double match points to Djokovic (USO 2010 and 2011).
And he lost to K Anderson in Wim 2018 holding match point.

OK, you will say that conversely, Fed won slam finals he could have lost, but those are very few compared to the matches he lost that he could have won.

I really think the more righteous man won that day...even though it does not look like that in many people's eyes
I wanted Federer to win but you're probably right. Novak was ahead the entire match so if Fed won it would've been the biggest houdini steal of his career

Of course, the one who deserved to win won, 24,000 souls booing him must be hard, and he showed the balls it takes to succeed against adversity (example in life)

Feddy lost despite that, if the crowd had booed him and celebrated Novak, the match would have lasted only 3 sets.

Novak 100% deserved that win. Still tough for a Fed fan to accept.

Explain why so many Fed fans cheer for Nadal after he broke the slam record.
Don‘t know. Some people just follow the ones with the greatest success maybe? Or it‘s because they don‘t like Djokovic and if Federer can‘t have the slam record, then rather Nadal?

they like nadal more than djo, what's done is done and there's no way back, no matter whether it's gonna be 2 slam difference or 12.. nadal is ahead anyway and to avoid that scenario with fed being third by slam tally, they cheer for nadal to eliminate djo in every slam encounter

He has told several interviews he is happy that he has been more than able to achieve his dreams

Are you saying you know better about his mind than Fed himself ?

Relax, man. He has won 20 majors , 6 YEC and 103 titles, 310 weeks at No 1, adulation of a billion fans and a $1 billion empire behind him. An extra major is not going to change anything
What he told in interviews doesnt mean its true. Nadal told at interviews that titles doesnt matter for him yet destroying his body and trying to win as much as possible. Playing tournament while his wife is at the hospital with problems and expecting a baby. Dont believe everything you heard in the media.
I dont need to know anything about Fed himself. Any TOP athlete would strive to achieve most and finish career as best. Its simple fact. Unless hes not considering himself TOP athlete, then yes he will be happy with his millions.

Would you choose 500mil + GOAT status (possibly for a very long time) or 1 bil?
Absolutely zero question for me. Always the GOAT. Actually even for (almost) no money. An assurance to never have to work after my career and to live in a normal house in a small village close to nature would totally do it for me.

Seriously I would have no idea how to spend both 500 millions or a billion, so why even think about the difference?

Why would people choose the additional money here? Well, obviously because they think that makes them happier. Any money above a normal living standard only has value if people need it to be happier. But certainly it wouldn't make ME happier. Being tennis GOAT would make me extremely happy though. So yeah, easy question, really.

But 9 Wimbledons v 6 for Djoker is very different to 8 v 7. Djoker would need to win 3 more just to catch him, but in reality it’s only 1 more. If Fed was as mentally tough as Rafa and Djoker he’d have 12 Wimbledon titles, undefeated in finals in his best slam like Rafa at FO and Djoker at AO. But he lost 4 finals. With 12 Wimbledon titles he’d be 5 ahead of the next best guy. Oh well he’s still on top at Wimbledon, but only 1 title more than Sampras and Djoker.
Yeah, I think this is what will hurt in the long run. Since few players play top-level grass (just as few play top layer clay), I expect Djokovic to win the next 3 out of 4 Wimbledons and so pass Federer at his favorite court. That was far less likely if Federer had converted 40-15.

People keep under-estimating Djokovic's drive and the fact that he has a VERY young body for 35 years old. He is made to last for a long time. People bring up Alcaraz who is a great talent, but he will have injuries, will have weaknesses exposed and be upset in early rounds even before reaching Djokovic in the SF or F.

Only in TTW echo chambers does it still matter that much. It was a missed opportunity. Yes. it happens in tennis and in life. The guy has won so much, is arguably the GOAT no matter what the numbers say, has had an incredible career spanning different eras and is easily the most loved tennis player and one of the most respected athletes who transcended the sport. Yeah, I am sure he's losing sleep over 40-15 now. Myopic TTW at it's best (worst)

how? Federer literally led by a mile in every stat on the day, aside from the 3 near perfect tiebreaks from Djokovic. Lots of matches Novak was the “righteous” victor vs RF, but that one went the wrong way.

I‘m not a proper Federer fan, I do like him and his tennis though and will miss him!

I just thought about how much more the Wimbledon 19 final weighs now. Would he have won it, at least there was some small not very realistic but romantic hope now, that he wouldn‘t be last in the slam race. Especially since the kids seem to start and step up now.

Apart from that specific final, how much on a scale from 0-100 would you have prefered it, if the current slam count was 22-21-20 N-F-D ?

Maybe 30.
Will be more important for bean counters.

For most people outside of the TTW bubble the Maestro is the GOAT anyway.

The worst tournament of all time.
I would not be surprised if all its data is deleted from the AELTC, thus declaring that Wimbledon was not played because of covid pandemic both in 2020 and in 2019.

I think it was more 3 dreadful tiebreaks from Fed than 3 perfect ones for Djokovic. If all he had to do was to just go into lockdown mode in tiebreaks, why couldn't he do it in 2014-2015 when he was a better player?

Wimbledon'19 will always be about Federer... but some people here tell me the other guy is the GOAT :-D
Funny you say this because to me it’s exactly the opposite. Djokovic showed immense resolve to win that match and ensure that the other guy would never again be considered the GOAT.

I’m pleased that the universe has put everything right - let Djokovic and Nadal battle for GOAT status. The other guy is an ATG and ranked right where he belongs.
