Interestingly, Nishikori may have saved enough energy to compete hard in week two this time. Of course, I still wouldn't bet on him beating Federer, but he might do better than he did in his two GS quarter-finals so far this year. So long, that is, as the Kukushkin match isn't too long. Kulushkin is always a tough guy to beat. He's a poor man's Davydenko, but Nishikori might prevail. I think in straights.

I have not seen him play since FO. So I am not sure about his form. Going by the results, he should be in good form. I think he will likely defeat Kukushkin in straights.
However, his form would not be good enough against Federer on grass(assuming Fed gets there). I would like to be proven wrong though.

Even if he has one long match, he should be okay in the next. What makes it impossible for him is a series of three or more long matches, as in Australia and France.
