Wimbledon announces it will abolish grass seeding formula

It made sense. Every surface should have their own rankings which should be combined with the usual ATP ranking.

Otherwise hardcourt will always have fairer draws than clay/grass.

Another solution is to play one surface for all tournaments. But fans won't like it.

My preferred solution is to keep the grass court seeding relevant by speeding up the courts back to how they were but I understand Wimbledon's reasons for not doing this.

Not before time. Rafa has been cheated of his seeding since 2013.
poor rusty peak injured roasted bullimero...

their answer is a very polite form of saying "get lost" )))
so I wouldn't expect a change based on this email thread.
But if you manage to get many signatures in a petition or something, that could change things.
So you were wrong. Their answer wasn't telling me to get lost. They've done as I asked.

He didn't say they'll drop the formula... just that there might be a tweaking of the formula to account for the evolving trends.

They have dropped the formula; so you were wrong.
I've been looking forward to bumping these comments since last year. I knew Wimbledon would see sense.

Wimbledon 2019: Rafael Nadal says seeding formula 'doesn't seem right'
Last updated on 25 June 2019

World number two Rafael Nadal says "it doesn't seem right" that he could be seeded behind world number three Roger Federer at Wimbledon.

Wimbledon seeding is different from the other Grand Slams in that it does not always follow world rankings and is affected by grass-court performances.
It means Federer may be seeded ahead of Nadal, who could be in the same half of the draw as Novak Djokovic.

"It's just Wimbledon that does it," said 12-time French Open winner Nadal.

"It is better to be second than third, but if they consider that I have to be third, I will accept."

Wimbledon seedings will be announced on Wednesday and Nadal, 33, is likely to be behind defending champion Djokovic and eight-time winner Federer, who won his 10th title at the grass-court tournament in Halle last week.

The Spaniard lost in the Wimbledon semi-finals to world number one Djokovic last year but had not made it past the fourth round in his five previous appearances.

Nadal's viewpoint was supported by Djokovic, who played at the Boodles exhibition event at Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire on Tuesday.

"It's their rules and you have to respect it, although it's a little bit surprising to be honest," said Djokovic.

If by intelligent we imply highly 'percentage' tennis where points are decided more by consistency rather than hitting winners then it's a general no from me.

you forgot to add that that athlete who has the ability to run faster and for longer periods of time.
but this has nothing to do with intelligence, so it's often ignored by those who rant about "intelligent tennis"

So you were wrong. Their answer wasn't telling me to get lost. They've done as I asked.

can you ask them to:
- change the surface wither to clay or HC?
- or to let players dress in the colors they like?
- or to move to a later stage in the calendar, so Rafa would have more time to recover after RG and to prepare for grass after clay?

No. I don't support any of the above. Why don't you tell them?

Playing to one's strengths is playing smart. Am I more entertained by that? Probably not for the reason I gave previously. There are exceptions as the (infamous) Mahut-Isner match was not worth watching my opinion of course.

Good, it’s not like it’s a Wimby “tradition”. The formula along with the 32 seed system started in 2001, and I’ve always thought they were bad ideas.

you won't tell them because you know that it was a lucky coincidence.
if you would really believe that they listened to you and changed something because of you, you would easily ask a longer time between the 2 tournaments.

and this lucky coincidence was probably pushed by Djokodal that were so upset in 2019 with Roger seeding being bumped so that they sh*t their white shorts into brown color.
like as Rafa was never in the past seeded below his ATP ranking and like as Novak seeding wasn't never bumped at W above his ranking due to past success on grass, for example in 2018 when he enter W being #21 in ATP ranking and was seeded #12.

Rafa has never been seeded above his ranking at Roland Garros where he reigns supreme as why should Wimbledon favour players who are not as dominant at Wimbledon?

Henman (last year):
"I'm sure we will look at after the championships because there's been a little bit of negative feedback about it. Rafa is one of the best grass court players. It's also slightly bizarre that we use the formula for the men and not for the women."

One of the negative feedbacks was from me.

Seems Wimbledon is gradually conforming to the norms of the other Slams. Firstly, introduction of the 5th set tie-break and now abandonment of the special seedings formula. Wonder what will be next? Relaxation of the all-white clothing rule?

- I like grass.
- I love that the players play all in white at Wimbledon because it goes well with the green grass.
- They have already moved the calendar by one week to allow players to recover from RG. Rafa won RG, Queens and Wimbledon one after the other in 2008, when Queens started the day after RG and Wimbledon a week after Queens.

You have every right to tell them yourself.

Indeed. His improved seeding would have helped him avoid the slew of highly ranked titans he was forced to face in the early rounds of 2013 to 2017.
Rafa wouldn't have played Kyrgios in the 4th round if the seeding had not been tampered with. Kyrgios was a young boy playing with nothing to lose and had he met Djokovic instead of Rafa, Djokovic would have gone out instead as he's never beaten Kyrgios.

It's called progress... Tradition is ok but you have to leave things behind at some point...

This decision is good, not because idea was bad, but because there weren't special formulas for other two surfaces...

The argument was always that the other 2 surfaces had many more tournaments and much longer seasons compared to grass. It was always controversial so maybe it's for the best in the end.
