Wimbledon cancelled

Yep, nobody knows how we get out this pre vaccine. We dont have an endgame yet or any real idea of what happens once we quell this initial outbreak.

Mass gatherings such as tennis tournaments surely one of the last things to return to normal.
Sadly this is true, and even more so for international events like tennis, where players, their coaches, sports therapists, nutritionists will be coming from all corners of the globe, and who knows what the situation would be like in any of those places. It takes one person in any place to bring something to a big event and then infect. Line judges, umpires, officials. You then have the people responsible for hospitality, the ball kids, and then the paying audience. Even if you do these events behind closed doors, you are still bringing in people from numerous locations around the world. At the moment, situation is not good anywhere, they need to be fully eliminated globally before they start opening their doors to international audiences. And you can be sure, even after situation has got better, there will still be a period of caution and events will have to be cancelled or postponed. Doubt tennis will get a chance to take center stage this year, or possibly until Christmas if we are really lucky and we see a turnaround.

Sadly, I have to agree with you. I reckon every large scale international event is going to be kiboshed for this year, not least because different countries seem to have different strategies, rates of infection etc. If a host country were to get the virus under control later on this year for example, are they really going to want to risk that by opening up the event to people from elsewhere who may be at a very stage of their epidemic? People attending an event could also bring it back to their own countries, and then the whole epidemic starts again. I think the only thing we can hope for it that by the end of the year, there will be huge amounts of cheap, readily available test kits available so at least people can be tested when entering a country, before, during and after events etc, but I doubt that even by then, there will be international consensus on how stringently people need to be tested, or how rigorous screening needs to be at airports etc.

It wasn't just that. They leaked the result out on purpose that Hulk Hogan was dropping the belt to Andre the Giant at The Main Event, this caused a buzz, because many wanted to see if that was indeed true, since Hogan had been champion for over four years at that point. The reasoning behind it was that they needed to advertize Wrestle Mania IV which was taking place one month later, and the phrase they were using was - Can Hulk Hogan win back the WWF championship belt in an elimination tournament?- Marketing had to tell the sponsors of what they were going to promote, and with that, they leaked out the finish. The buzz was huge, because it was even mentioned on a radio station that Hogan is going to lose the title to Andre and even more people tuned in. It was a risk, since they were exposing the business a little too much by giving away the finish, but it worked out in the end, because they then got the rights to host more prime time shows, instead of doing the Saturday Night's Main Event, which was late night viewing and had lower ratings over all.
That's true. But it also shows the star power of Hulk Hogan at the time. He was probably, at his absolute peak, the biggest wrestling star who ever lived in terms of worldwide recognition. Andre was right up there. They both had been in some hit movies as well which helped their fame including Princess Bride and Rocky 3.

This is sadly the real truth. Even if a said county has everything under control, other countries may not, and when you open your borders to the whole world, you open up the chances of potentially letting that virus back in and infect many, who can then take it back to their own countries. This virus is being transmitted very rapidly, so just the slightest breach can start a new wave of infection, especially if there will be no social distancing during these events.

Yes, there is no denying how popular they were. That along with the leak, and it being the rematch to Wrestlemania III main event that many had not seen on PPV made it must see.

Yup, the Hogan/Andre rivalry was probably the most significant feud in the history of the industry which attracted casual fans and even a portion of non-fans. How long have you been watching wrestling, Hitman? You watched continuously or on/off?

I have been watching since the 80s. I don't watch as much anymore, still check out the PPV though. But yeah went through all the periods.

A tennis season without the biggest event of the year. How sad ☹☹☹

Hopefully the French and US Open can be salvaged.

BBC mentioned talk behind the scenes of a December US Open in Indian Wells
Sadly I see no chance of the USO happening even if it is 5 months away. NYC is the epicenter of the virus right now in the States.

the French open is the last bastion that will try to have a chance.

Christmas seems optimistic. Seeing how the majority of medical professionals are afraid of this getting much worse once winter arrives, I don't see how anything will change before there's a vaccine - this may take years. Tennis won't be back for a very long time, namely because of the international nature of it, as you mentioned.

Yeah, I see your point. I am trying to be as optimistic as I can, but reality is, it could be a while.

They'll fine you anywhere from $500 to $100K if you they see you in any of the following:

– playgrounds and other structures in parks
– leash-free dog parks
– picnic shelters
– outdoor sports facilities and outdoor fitness equipment, including sports fields, basketball and tennis courts
– recreation centres and surrounding lands
– parking lots

10 additional bylaw officers will be added to support the enforcement of the new bylaws.

Interestingly, the US Championships/ US Open has never been cancelled - it was still held throughout both world wars (undoubtedly with much reduced fields, but still).

The day when it is announced that there will be no tennis at Flushing Meadows this year will be a sad and unprecedented one indeed.

The challenge with Wimbledon was it could have not been pushed out. And it's probably more expensive to arrange and not draw as much crowd, so that had to cancel it altogether. RG was smart.

Yeah it’s bad there but it’s gonna be even worse in UK the way we going here. Stay safe pal!
The grim reality of no tennis being played for the rest of the season will become more and more apparent, as more and more events fall. But it is what it is. I am sorry to hear about what is happening over where you are, thanks for your words and likewise, stay safe...we need to cheer the heavyweight champion onto glory when tennis returns hopefully next season, being optimistic here!

The 1917 one is controversial; the contemporary accounts state that it did not have championship status, but apparently it is included in official totals these days.

IW in December? Bring mega blankets for all night sessions...the overnight lows are around 40F (4.5C). Did BBC guy add that fact to this gossip???

Late 80s for me as well. It was watching continuously till around 2014. Then I stopped watching Raw every week. Now I'm barely watching at all. Didn't think that would happen. Awk well.

Just imagining Hulk Hogan cutting one of his promos on Corona, Jack. Gonna drop the leg on that stinky virus, Mike dude.

Yeah we all miss it. Miss the competition and the rivalries. I’m sure once we get through this it will make our appetite for tennis even bigger.

Thanks mate and hopefully we can get back to normality by end of year. No guarantee but here’s hoping. The heavyweight champ but you a video on his Facebook and he’s doing good with his family. We look forward to seeing him on court again in 2021 same for all the others.
