Wimbledon cancelled

While the Premier League is planning to finish the season in June behind close doors. Crazy...

Wimbledon is a one off event that hasn't even started. It's also totally reliant on crowds and international travel by players from across the world.

The Premier League is almost complete, the players are already in the UK, and matches don't require crowds. It would also be a good to have some sport on TV to help lift peoples' spirits if they're still in lockdown.

Two very different situations.

As an astrologist I was worried Djo would do the Golden Slam in 2020.

It is already unfair that Federer had to deal with a young ambitious rival, Nadal had to deal with a young driven rival, but Djokovic gets 30-something part-time Wawrinka who he meets once every twelve months.

This pandemic is truly an act of God.

I recall he got somebody else as well (at least up to 3 years ago).

Yep - millions must be sacrificed so that we can save one true GOAT.

So is the USO and RG totally reliant on crowds and international travel, but many here still (unbelievably) think those two slams will be played too in 2020.

Welp. Looks like Nadal will be primed to purposely tank USO, then be full sprint for RG once everyone is gonna be fizzled out from USI

It's only March and they are making this decision already? Why? The country being on lockdown should in theory halt the virus and things could be different in 2 months.

They should play Wimbledon in August. The Olympics was held there then in 2012.

They simply won't have travel protocols for all different countries in place by then. I doubt the tour will restart this year because host countries will need to have isolation protocols in place for people who have been to various countries, the affluent countries of western Europe and the United States near the top of the list. Governments simply won't take the risk of restarting the pandemic once they have it subsides by prematurely opening borders or loosening controls in order to stage a sporting event.

I wrote the explanation in this thread - https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/ind...-to-be-cancelled-not-post-poned.666629/page-3

Here in my post:
The only possible alternative term for Wimbledon would be the turn of July and August, the original term for the Tokyo Olympics. During this period it would be possible to organize a grass grandslam, as showed by the London Olympic Tennis Tournament 2012. But they are here two big problems:
  1. There is no guarantee that the current COVID-19 pandemic will be suppressed at that time, much more likely is the opposite.
  2. Wimbledon would have to undergo complicated negotiations with ATP, WTA, ITF and other Grand Slam tournaments, about change of the term; the arrogant decision, which made by the RG promoters about change of the term, Wimbledon organizers on principle they refuse.
As the alternative term may also be threatened, the Wimbledon organizers have decided not to prolong complications and will announce that this year's edition will not take place. It will be a sad decision, but certainly better than the RG promoters decision, which caused confusion on the tennis scene.

Enough of this bellyaching about no Wimbledon! I propose that all four slams are rolled into one SUPER BOWL SUPER SLAM. It would run for 8 weeks and have twice the normal draw. Every match (men & women) would be best of 5 sets and the winner would get credit for FOUR SLAMS, which means that Djokovic or Nadal could become the GOAT (of slams, at any rate) unless old man Federer pulls a last one out of the fire. Then Federer would be unreachable. Unless, of course, there were another pandemic...

What really counts, though, is that the estimated total tennis viewing time would be approximately the same as in a "normal" year. Maybe even more!
