Wimbledon decides not to award 2 of its wildcards

just read this, very strange. also thought it was odd that Dancevic & Malisse got WC's, historically Wimbledon has rarely given many WC's to non British players. I'm guessing this Wimbledon may have the least Brits in the draw in tournament history(unless a bunch qualify).

This sounds like a statement to low ranked British players, that they can't rely on handouts that they usually get this time of year.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Vincent Spadea and Thierry Ascione earned Wimbledon spots Friday when organizers decided not to award the final two of eight wild cards in the men's draw.

Spadea, an American ranked 110th, and Ascione, a Frenchmen ranked 119th, were the two players next in the rankings who were eligible to play at the grass court major, which starts June 23.

The other men's wild-card recipients were 2002 semifinalist Xavier Malisse, Britons Jamie Baker and Alex Bogdanovic, Canada's Frank Dancevic and Jeremy Chardy of France.

This is good news for British tennis. I hope that it will encourage the players to double their efforts. I always thought it was pointless awarding w/c to players who did nothing all year and were expected to compete with the world's best players when they spend most of their time competing in futures, satelites and challengers.

LTA finally making sense. Tournament is better of with experienced players who can at least put up any kind of fight in early rounds - compared to WC british guys who basically melt down and give a walkover to some of the guys in draw - making it unfair for the others who had to play qualifiers with a few more matches on grass in their legs.

Kudos.

Isn't it the All England Club who decide on the wildcards?

He lost in the qualifying round at Queen's so I suppose they didn't think he'd do any better in a best of five sets match.

Perhaps they're saving them for John McEnroe and Sampras??? :D

I feel like they might of been better off giving them to French, Australian or American players in some sort of swap deal.

A couple of British players getting a wild card to the Australian Open, for example, could of been beneficial whilst still showing them that they won't be given an easy route to get in the main draw of the biggest tournament in tennis.

they do not want to embrace the next brits that would get those wild cards because they stink and would get killed, so they just didn't give them to anybody

Yeah, but there are no decent British players outside the top 100. I'd much rather have no British WC's at any other GS. The LTA obviously did what's best for tennis.

I guess so. You could argue that for all Slams who give out Wild Cards to players from their respective Countries though.

That would mean the USTA were wrong to give their wild cards to the likes of Kuznetsov, Levine, Sweeting etc.. last year.

Kuznetsov got bageled by Almagro, Levine got bageled by Davydenko and Sweeting went down in the first round to the unseeded Tipsarevic.

I don't think you could class that fine line up of American talent outside the top 100 as good for tennis.

I don't think it's fair to only mention 3 of the 7 American wildcards if you are trying to make a general point. Isner won 2 matches and took a set off Federer, Young won a match and took a set off Lopez, and Odesnik won his first round as well.
