Wimbledon is too slow for Murray to win

Murray is best on fast surfaces like the US Open, where he has actually beaten Nadal. On the red clay of Roland Garros or the green clay of Wimbledon his shots sit up and allow Nadal to dominate.

Ironically, slowing the grass down killed British tennis. Henman and now Murray can't win a tournament on that surface.

Murray's UEs destroyed him today. I think he used the wrong tactics, and was wrong to concentrate on his forehand too often.

That said, Wimbledon ain't what it used to be.

Unforced errors because the grass is too slow for him to hit winners past Nadal.

I agree he is better on fast surfaces, although he has only been past the fourth round at the USO once.
At Wimbledon, he played Nadal pretty tight in 2010 even though he lost in 3, while he won the first set and could have easily been up a break in the second this year.
He went into mental meltdown today, I don't think the court speed was too important after that.

Man don't come up with this [bleep]. AO is slower than Wimby yet he beat Rafa in straigts over there.

Rafa is far better than Murray on grass. Period.

Murray's issues are in his head, not to do with surface. He's been in the Wimbledon semi final three years in a row, the last two years he has not made it to the second week of the US Open.

No, Murray is like Hewitt, on fast surfaces his shots don't sit up.

I don't agree with this as a general statement. Hewitt was the ultimate counter puncher in his prime, he won Wimby and USO but didn't do anything at the French. On the faster courts he could throw back the pace of his opponents right back at them, on slower clay courts he had to generate his own pace more and that's why he had a below average record there.

Actually Murray and Rafa both said Wimbledon is faster than the US Open.

Andy actually has expressed very different sentiments.

ANDY MURRAY: I just think the court's slow now. So a lot of the guys that weren't playing well on the grass four, five years ago I think are playing better. There's a lot longer rallies, so it gives the baseline players a lot more chances to cause upsets.

That's why guys like Falla last year had a good chance against Roger, because he was able to rally from the back. The court was slow. You know, especially if the weather stays like this. When it's cold, you know, it's one of the slowest courts in the year. That isn't an exaggeration.

He didnt really have a choice though. Nadal was using slice to his forehand, and generally attacking his forehand with inside out forehands and cross court backhands.

Agreed. The courts are drying up and the ball is kicking up. It's like a second clay court event. It's an outrage that they haven't done anything about this. Soak the courts at least.

Murray blew that match period.

It wasnt about the surface, he collapsed because of one point.

the man will never win a major.

Murray's shortcomings are not technical. Suggesting otherwise is just wishful thinking. Nadal would have trounced him on any surface, because it's best of 5 in a Grand Slam semi-final. Nadal has the mental strength required, and Murray is very immature in that regard. I mean seriously, look at his box, it's a mess, just like his head.

Excuses, excuses. The nanny state. More excuses.

Murray can win on any surface. He just did not get it done.
He will be back. He's a focused, competitive athlete. He'll play smarter next time.

Russeljones, good post, btw.^
