I was at Wimbledon in 2004 and I saw two of Federer's earlier matches as well as the final. I'd never seen anyone look so balanced on such a notoriously difficult surface. It was like everyone he came up against was playing on ice by comparison. Then in the final Roddick showed up with a forehand that sounded like a cannon and his blink-and-you'll-miss-it serve, and he outclassed Federer for the first set. I hadn't payed any attention to Roddick at all in the tournament and it caught me completely off guard. Who needs perfect footwork when you can end the point with a single strike? Federer managed to move up the gears and got it done, but considering the match up disadvantage Roddick had it was a properly impressive showing.

Roddick '04. Couple points either way and the match could have turned. Fed did well to blunt the power and turn the match around. I would say that peak Arod is the second best grass player behind Fed since '03.

2009 deserves to be top with 2007 and 2008. Roddick played out of his mind. He played better than his own iteration in 2004 and Federer in 2014.

Nadal 2011 doesn't deserve to be in the poll. Probably his worst slam final after 2014 AO. Roddick 2004 and Nadal himself in 2006 played better.

Me too.

But 2009 was way too tight to be in the second tier IMO. Roddick pushed Fed like Nadal did in 2007 and 2008. When Fed in his prime was that close to losing a Wimb final, you know it deserves top spot among the others.

I'm with everyone here. 07,08 and 09 losses were heartbreaking. What about 2015 Fed? Until final he played mindblowing tennis. In final Fed wasn't that bad, Djokovic was unpleyable. 14 Fed wasn't all that impressive.

Djokovic was unplayable in 2015, but Fed's level dropped after set 2.

Of course 07, 08 and 09 are popular and well deserved picks here but how about some love for Patrick Rafter? Rafter had Sampras on the ropes for awhile in 00 and lost 9-7 in the fifth to Ivanisevic in 01. I'd say Rafter is every bit as heartbreaking as those!
