Wimbledon seeding - 2017

Gentlemen's Seeding Formula
The seeds are the top 32 players on the Emirates ATP Ranking list, BUT then rearranged on a surface-based system. Since 2002 a seeding committee has not been required for the Gentlemen’s Singles following an agreement made with the ATP. The seeding order is determined using an objective and transparent system to reflect more accurately an individual player’s grass court achievements: The formula is:

- Take the Emirates ATP Ranking points at 26 June 2017

- Add 100% of the points earned for all grass court tournaments in the past 12 months

- Add 75% of the points earned for the best grass court tournament in the 12 months before that

http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/atoz/seeds.html

Whatever happens in the warm-up tournaments, I think this is what the Wimbledon seeding will be, using their formula:

#1 Murray
#2 Djokovic
#3 Nadal
#4 Federer
#5 Wawrinka
#6 Raonic

Djokovic just pipped Nadal by 76 points.

Djokovic
ATP ranking points - ........5805
2016 grass points...............90
75% of 2015 best grass pts..1500

Total seeding points..........7395

Nadal
ATP ranking points - .........7285
2016 grass points..................0
75% of 2015 best grass pts.......34

Total seeding points..........7319

It doesn't matter too much which one of Nadal or Djokovic is seeded 2 or 3; it only means that the one seeded 2 will not meet Murray until the final. Whichever way round, if they are on the same half of the draw they are likely to meet in the SF.

Federer

ATP ranking points - ..........4945
2016 grass points Wim..........720
2016 grass points Halle.........180
75% of 2015 best grass pts......900

Total seeding points..........6745

Wawrinka
ATP ranking points - ........6175
2016 grass points................45
75% of 2015 best grass pts....270

Total seeding points..........6490

If Raonic wins his warm-up event and Stan goes out in the first round, Raonic will pip Stan to 5th seed. That doesn't really matter because there is no advantage in the draw being seeded 5-8. I think Stan is the one who has lost out here because it makes a big difference being seeded 4 or 5.

If Wawrinka wins the title at Queens and Fed in Halle, they will be #2 & #4:
#1 Murray
#2 Waw
#3 Djoko
#4 Fed
#5 Rafa

If Raonic pips stan to No.5, it means Raonic is No.5 and Stan is No.6. That doesn't really matter because there is no advantage in the draw being seeded 5-8 - in your words.

So, what is Stan losing here?

Stan is losing out to Federer because Fed will be seeded 4 instead of 5 because of his grass points.

#1 Murray

How?

Rafa's seeding points: 7319

Wawrinka
ATP ranking points - ........6175
2016 grass points................45
75% of 2015 best grass pts....270
2017 maximum points.........500

Lucky ******* in Nadal's bracket. Nad's will be out by the 3rd round to a journeyman...

Stan has 370 more ranking points than Djokovic; under the formula, Djokovic will have 90 grass points from 2016 plus 1500 from 2015, a total of 1590. Stan only has 315 grass points 2015/16, so even if Stan wins Queens and adds 500 points, that's a total of 815 grass points how can Stan possibly overtake Djokovic in the seeding?

Because of this:
- Add 100% of the points earned for all grass court tournaments in the past 12 months:

Halle 2017: 500 plus 500 = 1000
Queens 2017: 500 plus 500 = 1000

:)

The top seeds as of now are:

1. Murray
2. Djokovic

3. Nadal
4. Federer
5. Wawrinka
6. Raonic
7. Cilic
8. Thiem

These are mostly set, except:
  • Fed can get to #3 if he wins Halle
  • Cilic can take #6 if he wins Queen's
  • Zverev can take #8 if he wins Halle

A Zverev is playing Halle, but he still has to win it.
No advantages to the the other 2 by going up 1 in the rankings.
Cilic is my dark horse for this event.

Last time I looked, Zverev was playing in Halle.

If it's 1. Murray 2. Djokovic 3. Nadal 4. Federer then sf should be Murray v Federer and Nadal v Djokovic if it went according to seedlings.

I hate it when they have 1 v 3 and 2 v 4.

They should just go the whole hog and just count the grass court points for the last 2 years and forget about the world rankings so that Nadal wouldn't even qualify for the main draw and will have to play the qualifying rounds. ;) ;) ;) Wimbledon is behaving as if it's not part of the rest of tennis. Why do they have to go back 24 months to retrieve grass court points then double the grass points earned this year?

Remember a clay court behemoth who said we go back 24 months to determine the whole ranking system on the tour ?

good thinking....they should have rankings for each surface! imagine how many non clay slams nads would have if he didnt rely on the cushy draws he attained through his CLAY points hall

Especially as Nadal has won the USO Series (on hard court) twice. The only current player to have done so.

mug draws due to his points on clay
I have to tell you that when Nadal won the USO Series in 2008 and 2013, he also won Wimbledon and beat Federer in one of them. Nadal beat Berdych in the other one (2010) after Berdych had beaten Federer in the QF; Fed tanking that match as he dreaded another beating by Nadal in the final.

What do you mean by 'the USO Series' ?

What do you mean by 'the USO Series' ?

The north american, hard courts part of the season. Starting the second week after Wimbledon(small 250 event - Atlanta, Indianopolis) till Us Open. European clay tournaments + Newport are not included. The guy who won most points in that part of the season, win the Us Open series. After that if he wins Us Open, he gets a bonus 1mln extra $.

2013 US Open Series
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In tennis, the 2013 US Open Series (known as Emirates Airline US Open Series for sponsorships reasons) was the tenth edition of the US Open Series, which included ten hard court tournaments that started on July 20, 2013 in Atlanta and concluded in Winston-Salem for the men and in New Haven for the women on August 24, 2013. This edition consisted of four separate men's tournaments and four women's tournaments, with the Western & Southern Open hosting both a men's and women's event. The series was headlined by two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 and two WTA Premier 5 events. Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams were the US Open Series winners, making them eligible for a $1 million bonus if either also won the US Open, a feat which they both accomplished, hence receiving the largest paychecks to date for a single tennis tournament, totalling $3.6 million each.

I think they should make it constant: 1 v 4 and 2 v 3.
For long periods in the last 10 years, no. 1, 2, 3 and 4 have been pretty stable. It would be utterly boring if it was alway Fed-Muzz and Rafa-Djoko. Or any utter combination for that matter. We need variety. 1 vs. 3 is just fine. It doesn't need to be 1 vs. 8 and 1 vs. 16 either.

I guess Rafa's been tanking ever since his 2011 loss to Novak then :rolleyes::rolleyes: - and done a fairly good job about it too

2008 and 2010, you say, but not 2013??

Wimbledon is Wimbledon. It does what it wants. Why are you so worried anyway, Rafa's more likely to get dumped in the first 3 rounds than make the final.

Rafa did not play at the USO in 2012 & 2014 due to illness and injury.

Yes, Rafa won the US Open Series i.e. achieved the Summer Slam in 2013, not in 2008 & 2010. :)

The US Open series does not include the US Open

This is what I think the draw will look like for the top 8 seeds

Murray
Federer
Wawrinka
Cilic

Djokovic
Nadal
Raonic
Thiem

Meles, you're absolutely sure that Sasha will get the 8th seed if he beats Fed on Sunday? I'm not doubting your stats, I just am incredulous he would be that high?
Believe me I'm as shocked as you as I thought with Kei going down Thiem was safe. Grass points count double so Zed beating Fed tomorrow puts him at another 400 points. I have absolute faith in:
http://openerarankings.com/home?Race=3

They have all the seedings formulas programmed in.:p

Thiem is at 4172.50. Zverev 3775; add 400 and he's at 4175 nudging Thiem out for 8th seed.

Muller fans should be stoked; he's all the way up to 16.

Thiem will be livid.

So if Federer wins the title he will be seeded 3 and Nadal will be seeded 4 and Thiem will be seeded 8. But if Sasha wins, he will be seeded 8 and Thiem will be seeded 9. Nadal or Fed seeded 3 or 4 is neither here nor there, but it's a big deal being seeded 9 instead of 8.

For year 2, 2015, they've added 100% instead of 75%.

Wow... stunned that Zverev at age 20 will the 8th seed at Wimbledon if he wins Halle. Thanks for explaining, Meles. If Z gets the 8th seed, he's got to be the youngest top 8 seed since teen Rafa? At least I'm pretty sure.
