WATLYNM staff has gone on alert after Casper Ruud dropped an opening set to the Incompaireable Paire. The frenzy has relaxed a bit after the second set result evened things out.

On another court, the newest first time champion Sebastian Korda has dropped serve in his opening game vs Pedro Martinez. We will wait to see if a second suite needs prepping.

Yes, staff! Please hurry to ready the New Champions Suite for Sebastian Korda. Pedro Martinez has made a thorough presentation and the young American is about to sign for the two-week stay here at The Lodge.

Tbh, I kind of expected this entry. Glad he won his first title last week, but it's poor prep for a slam. This time next year, hopefully he's in the top 30 and doesn't feel the need to play these smaller tournaments the week ahead of a slam.

Korda came into the clay season with a groin issue and probably didn’t wait for a full recovery when he started match play. The results were pretty poor (1-4 including a qualies loss at Madrid) to start so he probably went ahead with Parma just to get some needed match practice, much like what fedr is seeking this week at RG. Winning it was a surprise plus but it did come with a cost of that crammed schedule.

We’ll have to put the staff on alert for refurbing the Grand Slam Champion Suite for the other last weekend warrior, Belgrade champion Joe Kovic. It won’t be a high alert but it is a lavish suite that requires a bit extra lead time to complete.

The Falco doppelgänger could not close so Cilic escapes a stay at the WATLYNM. It’s a pity…the chefs in our world class kitchen were getting ready to prepare some dishes that are off the Scoville chart for The Big Pepper.

Marin is devastated (he was desperate to lose that last match).

You go there, Ugo! The staff is quickly readying a suite for the Halle champion if he continues this slow start in Mallorca vs the more rested Kecmanovic.

WATLYNM staff is moving into high alert status as Sebastian Korda is making a strong presentation to Eastbourne champion Alex de Minaur. He is up a set and a break at 5-3. Korda is very recently familiar with our fine amenities, having stayed with us during RG’21. This familiarity often makes for a great sales pitch!

I called that one a couple of days ago.

Wut? If you want to track trivia minutiae, by all means do it…in your own thread.

Thanks for sharing !

You’re taking this to a whole other level, partially because you have no sense of humor. The whole development of the WATLYNM Lodge trope by me is obviously a tongue in cheek poke at players that fail right away. By me telling you juniors are not acceptable guests just means more tongue in cheek. However, you have to insult me by calling me “daft” is OK???

I’m putting you on ignore now so I don’t have to deal with your childish attacks. Bye now, enjoy your life!

BTW, you might aspire to be a Joseph Konrad but you are a pale imitation of a great writer. He was a man and you’re a little baby.

No room for Barty?
Much as the Olympics may feel like contests between individual players, it isn't.
For Barty, read "Australia." For Sorribes, read "Spain."
So although Barty's defeat after the Wimbledon title may feel like a WATLYNM item, I'd say it isn't.

Well it kinda is. She may have been playing for her country but it was still her match.
Just imagine Ash asking for a place at the Lodge and the resulting decision by Concierge/Head of Security Shaq O’Neal and his youthful assistant Milton:

O’Neal and his crew have strict orders to deny all “suitors” attempting residence as a result of play at junior level, at any WTA level and any ATP level below Tour. We just don’t have the staff and facilities to provide the luxurious surroundings necessary to allow proper rehab after the PTSD level trauma ATP players suffer when going through losing so soon after their mercurial runs to the Everest-like heights of victory. Just imagine if you were Joe Kovic and you had lost to Dellien yesterday after winning three tournaments in a row: you would not want to be surrounded by women and children as you try to put your career back together, would you???

OK, I'm outnumbered. But it's not the medal winner's favorite song that's played during the award ceremony, it's the national anthem. The players are said to "represent" their country more than themselves. This patriotism brings out an extra firepower in many players and quite a few perform much better in Davis/Fed cups and Olympics than otherwise. Take Puig's spectacular run to gold the last time around, and Struff's super-Struffing in the Davis.

Alcaraz today lost his first match to some Austrian dude in Kitzbühel after winning his first title in Umag
Tbf to him he played the Umag final yesterday and was already in action today, didn't seem like he was ready

Carlos! Come on down and sign the register!

Alcaraz is the second successive teen Umag champion to stay at the WATLYNM. Rublev got to know us in 2017 when he won on the Croatian coast and then lost 1R Hamburg. That was a bad commute when compared with Umag to Kitzbuhel.

BTW, the Umag final was Sunday evening. He had Monday off to travel and was given the last possible time slot today to accomodate his schedule. Kitzbuhel is traditionally a Saturday final so 1R had to be played today.

I think Alcaraz was ready, going 5-7 6-1 before fading in the third to a 2-6 conclusion. What might have thrown the teen more than fatigue is the altitude difference, not an easy transition to master the first few times.

If he wasn’t prepared physically there would always exist the option to simply withdraw. As a youngster with a full traveling staff including a former #1 player as his coach (JCF), I would bet that option would have been considered if he were really struggling after Umag.

The “Austrian Dude” Erler is one of daddy Wolfgang Thiem’s protégés so he definitely had home court working for him. This is a good win for him. 2R will be Mikael Ymer. Maybe he can back up this upset with another, like Kopriva’s baking session for Ymer in Gstaad (breadstick/bagel.)

Apparently Quick Nick was not impressed with the compensation package we provided for booking The KAndyman’s stay at the WATLYNM. He did not make a good initial impression on Cameron Norrie tonight but he seems to now have polished his points to persuade Norrie to come stay with KA and the teen Alcaraz. Who knows with Nick. Maybe he will close the deal.

Ivashka and Zverev both avoid the WATLYNM rather routinely. Neither Sandgren or Querrey could follow the instructions from real estate closer Blake to, “ABC; Always Be Clising.”

Before anyone suggests the teen Rune can check in: Challenger titles do not qualify for admission to our prestigious lodge.

There is no title won when you qualify. The name of the thread is Win A Title Lose Your Next Match. Challenger to ATP/Slam step up does not qualify here.
ah no, I was suggesting that his winning those qualifiers before his loss might disqualify him from the lodge, even if his previous title win had been at the ATP tour level.

Makes me curious if anyone's ever won an ATP tour level title and then had to qualify for a slam.

Leo Mayer won Hamburg’17 but his points didn’t put him into USO main draw. He got in as a LL in both draws, obviously winning it all at Hamburg. At USO he won 2 rounds before losing to The Nadal.
