Not the most exact metric. It would be better to do that based on win rates the surfaces.
I mean beating 2019 Thiem at RG seems more impressive than beating 2020 Djokovic there. So stats are misleading in this case since your performance in the whole year can be poor on a surface and be good on another surface.

Rodick's 2004 92% win percentage on grass is certainly less relevant than his win rate across the entire year when looking at him as an opponent at Wimbledon
Will probably have a thread about that final or the 2012 final at Wimb soon.

Yes its irrelevant when looking at a big picture

Wins over the two other Wimbledon SF'ists at Queens, a win over Hewitt who returned to the top 10 the next week (and was the only person other than Roddick to take a set from Federer all grass season). Yes Roddick's grass court swing in 2004 was good stuff. The top five grass players in 2004 were Federer, Roddick, Hewitt, Grosjean and Ancic - Roddick had four wins over that group in 2004. He was over 80% on HC as well BTW. His win/loss record on clay is more important than that? lol.

Congrats on exposing yourself though lol.

Win percentage over a whole season doesn't determine how well someone plays. It's an indicator, but a hell of a vague one at that.

If you split it up by surface, you'd get a little closer, but you'd still need to center on the actual tournament because one guy's results in Indian Wells might not reflect his results in RG.

Hell, even might not reflect his results in WTF, Paris, Shanghai, Cinci!! Ask Nadal

Higher win % doesn’t make an opponent tougher. See 2015 Federer or Murray for best example of this.

Murray 2011 AO/RG is another great example of this. Played like **** but has a high win % over the season so gets lumped in as a strong opponent.

AO 2011 Murray stronger than 2012 AO, WIM, USO Murray ;)

AO 2011 Murray, who Djokovic defeated, was stronger than 2012 USO Murray, who Djokovic was defeated by. Therefore... Something.

Watch out for all those brains exploding.

It's almost like this statistic is virtually meaningless for determining form in a given match. To even make a slam final and lose it the finalist has to be batting at 85.7% for the tournament, which is already higher than Lew's arbitary cut-off point...

> Disparage slam finalists based on their win rate over the respective year.
> Exalt slam finalists because they were 'in good enough form to reach the final'.
> Pick both.

He beat Hewitt in Queens just a week before returning to the top 10. And Ancic on grass sure as heck is a tougher opponent than top 10 player Ferrer.

And besides, Ancic and Grosjean were top 10 at some point in their careers anyway.

Grosjean went 25-7 on grass across 2003-2005, but 5 of his 7 losses were either to Roddick himself or Federer. His other two losses were to Philippoussis at Wimbledon (not a bad loss) and Vacek in Hertogenbosch. So basically the guy had one bad loss in three years on grass and was essentially 25-2 against the field minus the top two grass players.

But of course players like this don't get factored into Lewisian statistics ;)

Honestly, Ancic is about as good on grass as someone like Tsonga.

Grosjean isn't far behind either.

isn't that the main argument for 2003-2007 being weak era?

how can it be tough combo? Lewie, Lewie, Lewie
