Thiem did it yesterday. Another example I remember is Wawrinka in RG-he lost in the first round in 2014, then won the title in 2015. Any other examples?

This is also lose a tournament in the first round, win the next tournament, which is probably a lot more common, but still. A first round masters loss, followed by winning the next slam.

Ostapenko’s a fun one. She’s played in 19 slam tournaments in her career. In 8 of them she lost in the first round. In only 3 did she make it past the third round. Crazy that she’s a slam champ.
